On Friday 16th November 2019 I flew from the most northerly airport on the UK mainland. The cost of this one way flight was £72.29, that price included the Air Discount Scheme provided by the Scottish Government. Its main aim is to make air services more affordable for remote communities in the Highlands & Islands and by providing a discount of 50% on the core air fare on certain eligible routes.

BURWICK TO JOHN O GROATS 12 7 2016
Arriving at John O´ Groats Scotland / London To Biejing in a bycicle
On July 16, 2012 I finally cycled into John O Groats after a 1711 km ride from Land's End. This ride is the longest route in the UK. It took me 21 days of riding to complete it. This is just a brief video that obviously does not capture how I felt upon arrival. Very happy and satisfied, of course.

Our Epic Scotland North Coast 500 RV Adventure (Part 6) - John O'Groats to Fortrose
This has been on our bucket list for such a long time, to complete the Scotland North Coast 500! Simon was also keen to do this in an RV!
So in early June, we flew into Inverness, had a hired RV waiting for us to collect from the airport and began our 500 plus mile route around the coast of upper Scotland. We decided to tackle this clock wise!
Here is part six, we hope you enjoy our unique style and experience, we have never travelled in an RV, never mind wild camping in one! Comments always welcome and if you have any questions about our travels, please feel free to ask!

Caithness - Wick Airport
Promotional destination video for Wick Airport and Caithness including John O'Groats.
Places to see in ( Wick - UK )
Places to see in ( Wick - UK )
Wick is a town and royal burgh in Caithness, in the far north of Scotland. The town straddles the River Wick and extends along both sides of Wick Bay. Pulteneytown, which was developed on the south side of the river by the British Fisheries Society during the 19th century, was officially merged into the burgh in 1902.
The town is on the main highway (the A99–A9 road) linking John o' Groats with southern Britain. The Far North railway line links Wick railway station with southern Scotland and with Thurso, the other burgh of Caithness. Wick Airport is on Wick's northern outskirts. The airport has two usable runways. A third is derelict.
The main offices of The John O'Groat Journal and The Caithness Courier are located in Wick, as are Caithness General Hospital (run by NHS Highland), the Wick Carnegie Library and local offices of the Highland Council. Wick Sheriff Court is one of 16 sheriff courts serving the sheriffdom of Grampian, Highland and Islands.
The town lies on the estuary of the Wick River, spanned by two road bridges. The Harbour Bridge spans the river at its mouth, to link Wick town centre with Wick Harbour and Pulteneytown. It stands instead of the earlier Service Bridge. Further upstream the Bridge of Wick carries the main road linking John o' Groats with Latheron and Inverness (the A99-A9).
Pulteney town is now an area of Wick on the south side of the River Wick. Until 1902 Pulteney town was administered separately from the Royal Burgh of Wick. Pulteney town takes its name from Sir William Pulteney, a governor of the British Fisheries Society, who also commissioned Robert Adam to build the Pulteney Bridge in Bath. In the early years of the 19th century Sir William commissioned Britain's leading civil engineer, Thomas Telford, to design and supervise the creation of a major new herring fishing town and harbour at the estuary of the River Wick.
Wick Bay is an isosceles triangle with the river mouth as its apex, and the points of South Head and North Head, separated by about one kilometre,as the base of the triangle. Beyond the heads lies the North Sea. Pentland Firth line about 11 kilometres north of North Head.
There are three harbours in Wick, the Outer Harbour, the Inner Harbour, and the River Harbour, all of which are formed and protected by breakwaters. The Outer and Inner Harbours are on the south side of the estuary, divided from the River Harbour by a breakwater. The River Harbour straddles the river, with breakwaters on either side of an entrance about 30m wide.
Wick castle is thought to have been his stronghold on the mainland of Britain. There is evidence that the site was occupied before the present castle was built. Wick Heritage Museum is in Bank Row, Pulteneytown. The museum is run by the Wick Society, with a strong focus on the herring-boom era of Wick's history. The herring trade relied on the export of cured herring to the Continent (in particular, Stettin and St Petersburg) and languished after the First World War.
The Wick Carnegie Library is now run by the Highland Council. As well as providing a general library service the library preserves valuable books and other documents about Wick and Caithness and their histories. Also it preserves a crocodile (Gavialis gangeticus) presented by Sir Arthur Bignold in 1909.
( Wick - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Wick . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Wick - UK

Land's End to John O'Groats by Bus and Train
Our friend Roger asked us along on a trip he wanted to take on the longest day of the year - getting from one end of the country to another.
Many people do this by walking, cycling or evening running (!) but how long would it take to use schedule public transport - i.e. just buses and trains. Could we do it in less than 24 hours?
We also met by chance the amazing Tony - partially sighted with the assistance of his guide dog, raising money for the Guides Dogs charity. We're thrilled that he met his goal and got 50% more, well done Tony! His page is here:
Thanks also to Karen & Phil for their assistance, and to Martin, Michael, Jamie and Chris for coming out to meet us too!

ROAD TRIP | Orkney Islands & John o'Groats | Motorbike Tour Scotland | Wandering Bird Adventures
We had a fantastic Road Trip to the Orkney Islands and John o'Groats. We explored both places on our Triumph Scrambler motorbikes- awesome day tour and used our drone to make the most of some incredible views.
Did you know the Orkney Islands are actually just called Orkney? Neither did we until we got there. Such a warm and friendly place and we were lucky to have spectacular weather. If you'd like to read the entire story of our road trip- including costs and where we booked ferries etc, go to
We also took our motorbikes to John o'Groats- fulfilling a long held ambition of ours. It was so cool to drive them up to the post and take photos!
This trip was part of our Motorhome Tour of Scotland in 2017. We towed the motorbikes with us just so we could go exploring on days like this! BUT you can take your motorhome or campervan on the ferry to Orkney- you don't need a motorbike. We have plenty of other travel tips which you might find useful while planning your road trip to Orkney or Scotland.
There was so much incredible scenery and beautiful views to enjoy. We hope you enjoy them too.

In 2017, our family travelled Europe in a motorhome. When we returned, we decided we liked it so much we wanted to do it again! So we traded in the van for a bigger model, quit (one of) our jobs and in 2018 we're heading off to explore Europe again- proper RV living!
We're starting with Germany and then moving on to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and many more. We hope you can follow our journey!

Sharon Gayter - Fastest woman to travel by foot between John O'Groats and Land's End. 822 miles...
Sharon is a member of North York Moors AC and became a serious runner in 1994 when she completed her first 100km and 24 hour race, winning gold in the National Championships at both events, she is still the only person to take both titles in the same year.
Sharon has represented Great Britain for 18 years, on 27 occasions, winning several medals as well as further National Championship titles.
Towards the end of her international career Sharon progressed to longer and more extreme races. In 2011 she was ranked World Number 1 for 6 days on the road with her British Record of 750km, a race she won outright as the first person.
In the same year Sharon broke the Guinness World Record for the furthest distance run on a treadmill in 7 days. Her distance of 833km added over 100 miles (160km) to the existing female record and nearly 50 miles (80km) to the men’s record. It is rare that a female world record is better than the male world record in athletics!
In October 2016, Sharon had run 186 ultras, 114 marathons and 119 off-road races of near marathon distance, some 419 events of 24 miles or further.
Sharon has raced across deserts such as the Libyan Challenge, Ocean Floor Race and Badwater Ultra-marathon. She has done multi stage races such as Marathon des Sables, Grand to Grand Ultra, Fire and Ice 250km, Trans-Alpine from Germany to Austria, Switzerland and Italy, Verdon Canyon, Al-Andalus Ultra Trail and Trans-Slovenia (winter edition).
During this podcast, Sharon shares more about her early life, how she got into running, and how running has changed her life. She shares more about the planning and preparation that goes into a World Record challenge like JOGLE. Sharon is super down to earth and full of top tips and advice to motivate and inspire you!

John O'Groats by Together Travel Co.
With the incredible rugged coastline, white-soft beaches and epic surf, the Caithness region is an undiscovered gem for those wanting to grab their board and hit the waves somewhere new.
Together Travel hosted the Gumball Rally 3000 crew back in early 2016, where they kicked back in our luxury lodges, witnessed the breath-taking Scottish sights and sought out some of the best surfing adventures to be found.
Not only that, but they were lucky enough to get front row seats to the Aurora Borealis from the comfort of our deckchairs - where else can you make that claim?!
