▪ Almost a Year Ago (Sting)
about 300 miles roundtrip with my detour and wrong turns.
The entire Erie Canalway Trail (ECT) is about
▪280 miles trail (paved & dirt/crush gravel fines)
▪ 80 miles on-road riding to next trailheads
Climbs:
▪Last 25 miles Schoharie/Schenectady area to Waterford is quite hilly in places while other areas mostly flat. Short 8%'s.
▪ 700+ feet climb going east
▪1100+ feet climb going west
Further West is a constant 1/2 to 2% climb leveling out a bit eventually.
I was well pleased with on road conditions and only less than 10 miles of trail that wasn't bad but could use little attention (older paved area).
■ Be VISIBLE and prepared for multiple road crossings and on-road segments.
▪I used Reflective yellow vest along with tail and headlights, bright orange flag for rear, helmet (of coarse) and 2 Myrricle Mirrors (tm) on 8 extension bars. Along with road sense and shoulder/lane positioning and constant observance in mirrors.
● Of the stretch i rode, i only had difficulty routing through 2 areas (a little bit) but used
▪On road (pavement) direction markers and ECT signs will be your best friend (going east)...(going west is bit more challenging finding next trailhead/connection at times, for me anyway.
▪i was able to use smartphone as i approached a town/village/city that had multiple turns on-road...with average speed 4G & 3G.
▪Google only a couple times misrouted me only because i got lost & tried to RE-ROUTE me
▪ In Utica area..
▪Onto NY Rt 5 (interstate) instead of following BICYCLE ROUTE 5....
▪Barnes ave through closed Utica Marsh
▪in Harbor Canal Road to old lock E19
(A dead end with no crossing over canal)
[Reminder I started about 10 miles west of Rome NY where original canal was started 200 years ago in 1817.]
[Avoid Lock 21 (7 miles west of Rome) if u can...it has no facilities or potable water....but is a place to set tent if needed]
Places I used for camping:
▪Marcy Lock 20 - free
▪Little Falls Marina & Rotary Park ($10)
I call this OASIS of the ECT in the east
Showers etc. (key to the building...$3 laundry)
Cash or credit card
▪ Closing about Oct 10, 2017
▪Fort Plain Lock 15 - free
▪Lock 8 (not normally place to stay)
(i called to ask about setting tent..very acommodating)
( Few miles west of Schenectady)
not a designated campsite but will allow to set tent. NO potable water. Get water before. (I asked to fill 1 bottle.
(faucet on building NOT POTABLE contains lead/arsenic traces)
▪Waterford Harbor Visitor Center
$10 refundable key deposit to restroom/shower
Camp on side of building.
(Always CALL beforehand that day or day before)
The day i planned arriving they were full with festival going on. Usually always room after Labor Day but depends on activities
Thanks to
▪ ECT volunteers & staff for all the hard work
▪NYS Lock Corp for designating camping
(Only thing lacking for primitive camping is an
electric outlet)
▪I used
▪Marcy Lock 20 &
▪Fort Plain Lock 15
▪Especially thank Lock 8
▪let me set my tent and a liter of water
▪you are strategic place breaking up 65
miles into 2 days ... Fort Plain to Waterford
▪Visitor Centers (like Waterford) for providing such an oasis in the middle of a camping tour...
▪for Little to no cost for travelers
▪Hot showers, restroom, water, electric outlet, WIFI, comfortable place to relax a bit, etc.
▪Little Falls Marina - Rotary Park
▪for all the Amenities ...
▪ hot shower, immaculately clean restroom, and key to entire building... electric outlets, lowcost laundry access, free WIFI, relacjng place to lounge inside & out...and an awesome view! AWESOME!

LIVE: Continuing coverage after Sen. John McCain dies of brain cancer

Blackfish (2013) | Documentary
The story of Tilikum, a captive killer whale that has taken the lives of several people, underscores problems within the sea-park industry, man's relationship to nature, and how little has been learned about these highly intelligent mammals.
The documentary concerns the captivity of Tilikum, an orca involved in the deaths of three people, and the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity. The coverage of Tilikum includes his capture in 1983 off the coast of Iceland and his purported harassment by fellow captive orcas at Sealand of the Pacific. Cowperthwaite argues these incidents contributed to the orca's aggression.
The film includes a testimonial from Lori Marino, director of science with the Nonhuman Rights Project. Cowperthwaite also focuses on SeaWorld's claims that lifespans of orcas in captivity are comparable to those in the wild, typically 30 years for males and 50 years for females, a claim the film argues is false.[8] Other people interviewed include former SeaWorld trainers, such as John Hargrove, who describe their experiences with Tilikum and other captive whales.
The documentary reports that the whales have experienced extreme stress when their offspring were captured in the wild or when separated after breeding at water parks. The film features footage of attacks on trainers by Tilikum and other captive whales as well as interviews with witnesses.

Interstate Highway System
The Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways (commonly known as the Interstate Highway System, Interstate Freeway System, Interstate System, or simply the Interstate) is a network of freeways that forms a part of the National Highway System of the United States. The system is named for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who championed its formation. Construction was authorized by the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956, and the original portion was completed 35 years later. The network has since been extended, and as of 2012, it had a total length of 47,714 miles (76,788 km), making it the world's second longest after China's. As of 2011, about one-quarter of all vehicle miles driven in the country use the Interstate system. The cost of construction has been estimated at $425 billion (in 2006 dollars).

Cuba Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Cuba – Enjoy old-world architecture, famous cigars and classic cars in this long-isolated island nation. Check out Cuba’s top sights for travelers.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Cuba:
Despite being within easy reach of Florida and the Bahamas, #Cuba exists in a time and space all its own.
Explore Cuba’s capital, Havana, a city preserved by forts, a five-mile seawall, and an imposed embargo, which held back the excesses of the 20th century for over 50 years. Havana’s lure can be hard to resist, but a #vacation in Cuba can offer so much more beyond the seductive lights of its capital. In Cuba, a long sandy beach is never far away.
Sometimes it’s hard to know whether Cuba is awakening to the world, or if the world is awakening to Cuba. Whatever your politics, it's easy to admire this island nation that has proudly gone its own way. Cuba may still have one foot firmly in the past, but as the world tumbles towards tomorrow, we can be thankful for the many things it has not let go.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.
