Big Springs ~ The Snake River Starts Here in Island Park, Idaho
Big Springs is the name of a first-magnitude spring located in Island Park, Idaho. The spring produces over 120 million gallons of water each day. It is a primary source of the North Fork or Henrys Fork of the Snake River. The other major source is the Henry's Lake outlet. The Big Springs is also famous for its large rainbow trout which congregate at the foot of the bridge waiting to be fed by the tourists. No fishing is allowed until below the outlet to Henry's Lake, several miles away. Big Springs is the only first-magnitude spring that issues from rhyolite lava flows. It is a National Natural Landmark designated in August 1980. The spring is in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and the site is managed by the National Forest Service. A .5 mile handicap-accessible trail offers wildlife viewing of osprey, bald eagles, waterfowl and the occasional moose, white-tailed deer, and muskrat.
Next to Big Springs is a log cabin built by Johnny Sack in 1929. The cabin is open to visitors.
Our Favorite Family Vacation Spot - Island Park, Idaho
We visit Big Springs, Idaho- where huge trout can be seen in crystal clear water, we visited Johnny Sack's cabin, and we are still confused as to who he is, exactly and we enjoyed the gorgeous Mesa Falls. Back at the cabin, we wakeboard, wake surf and go fishing.

Here are some of our favorite things to do near Island Park: Harriman State Park, Mesa Falls, Big Falls Inn, Playmill Theatre, Howard Springs, Big Springs, Johnny Sack Cabin, West Yellowstone, Yellowstone National Park, Cave Falls, Grand Prismatic Spring, Old Faithful Geyser, and playing in the Snake River. We had a close encounter with a black bear that you can see at 7:30. We also took our little girls to go horse riding at Yellowstone Horses at Eagle Ridge Ranch. We couldn't have had a better time. Island Park
Messing around with my drone again, but this time I'm in the beautiful Island Park area of Idaho (very near Yellowstone National Park). Still a lot to work on to get nice smooth shots... but I'm still learning. Tried out the flight following this time a bit too, that was pretty fun.

Big Springs Fish Feed, Island Park Idaho
Big Springs is the source of over 100 million gallons of pure fresh water a day to the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. The nearby bridge has been a favorite spot to feed the numerous and big fish that stay nearby. On this day a big tour bus brought dozens of tourists who spent a few minutes feeding the fish and also ducks and seagulls who have figured out the opportunities for a free meal.
