Memories of Johnson Air Base

This home movie is from the Walter Moore archive and spans the years 1951-53. It has been digitally enhanced with sound added. Johnson Air Base was established by the U.S. Air Force on Sept. 25, 1945 in the then rural village of Sayama and adjacent Iruma, Saitama Prefecture, northwest of Tokyo. It had served as headquarters for the Fifth Air Force. On June 28, 1973, all USAF units were inactivated and the base was transferred to the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

Johnson High School, Tokyo, Japan (1967)

This is a 1967 film titled Excellence in Education: A New Look from the Orient produced by the Department of Defense Dependent Schools (DoDDS). Johnson High School was located on Johnson Air Force Base in Japan and served U.S. military and civilian dependents from 1959-1974.

Although the film states that JHS was located in Tokyo, it actually was located in Iruma, Saitama Prefecture, a northwestern suburb of Tokyo.

The film highlights the new curriculum introduced at JHS. The campus was housed in old Japanese World War II-era quarters on what was the Johnson Family Housing Annex. Note how ill-maintained the buildings were. The air base, which was once a Kamikaze training base, was phased out in the mid-1970s and reverted to the Japanese in its entirety in1978. It is now called Iruma Air Base and is occupied by the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF).

Ironically, the old high school campus (and many other facilities left over from when it was a U.S. air base) still stand, but have continued to fall into disrepair.

Incidentally, in the 1950s Johnson Air Force Base was home to Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (later known as singer-songwriter John Denver) and his younger brother. They were Air Force brats whose father, a lieutenant colonel, was a highly decorated pilot. Although they didn't attend JHS as they were too young, they did attend the base elementary school.

A clip from a Japanese TV documentary using U.S. Army newsreel footage of the renaming and dedication of Johnson Army Air Force Base in Iruma, Japan on Feb. 25, 1946. Johnson was formerly known as Irumagawa Japanese Imperial Army and Air Force Academy and Irumagawa Airfield. Johnson and nearby Johnson Family Housing Annex reverted to Japan between 1973-78 and is now called Iruma Air Base of the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force.
