University of Utah - 40 years of the Huntsman Center
On December 1, 1969 the first mens basketball game was played in the newly built Huntsman Center at the University of Utah. This year it is eclipsing 40 years of being home of the Utes and now celebrate some of the greatest moments in basketball, gymnastics and special events.
A look at Utah basketball's new practice facility
University of Utah athletics cut the ribbon on its brand new Jon M. and Karen Huntsman Basketball Facility on Thursday, October 1, 2015, and we were given a look around the brand new 100,000-square foot building that connects to both the Huntsman Center and HPER Complex and is the new home to both the men’s and women’s basketball programs at the university.
The $36 million complex has five floors, including two 12,000 square foot practice gyms on the first floor. Also on the first floor is a lounge for all the players, featuring a Utah-themed pool table. Both the men’s and women’s locker rooms are on the first floor, as is the video rooms for each team. The locker rooms feature each player’s name lit up. There is also a spa room and pools to cool down in while players recover.
The second floor is the ground floor, featuring a spacious lobby that honors the past and present basketball program. There is also a balcony that overlooks both the men’s and women’s basketball courts that doubles as a lounge. A high performance center is also located on this floor.
The third and fourth floors are the offices for the men’s and women’s programs. Men’s head coach Larry Krystkowiak, whose office is on the fourth floor, and women’s head coach Lynne Roberts each have an office that overlooks the campus and the Salt Lake valley. Both are 935 square feet and are designed the same fashion and each include a fireplace, a 60-inch television screens that retract into the ceiling and a full private bathroom with shower. Each floor has a “war room” that features a table that is a replica of the Huntsman Center court.
Finally, the fifth floor is a rooftop terrace that includes a grill, fire pit and patio lounge.
