Together with the Ministry of National Development (MND), Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and the National Parks Board (NParks), TheSmartLocal organised #InstaWalk at Joo Chiat on the 8th of December 2018 to learn about this heritage district and its iconic architecture.
Together with 22 lucky participants, our #iWalkJooChiat journey took us to the most instagrammable locations here such as the Koon Seng Road Shophouses! You can read a recap of what happened during the walk here:

Exploring Tanjong Katong & Joo Chiat || Singapore || Walking Tour ||
Katong, also known as Tanjong Katong, is a residential neighbourhood in the eastern portion of the Central Region of Singapore, within Marine Parade planning area. It used to be located by the sea, but land has been reclaimed all the way to East Coast Park to provide more land for housing and recreational purposes due to the shortage of land in the late 1960s after Singapore gained independence.
Katong was the location of many villas and mansions of the wealthy elite in the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. They made their fortunes in the Far East and built seaside resorts, villas and manors along the beachfront of Katong, beginning from Katong Park to the end of the East Coast.
Katong's rich cultural mix has contributed to its unique cuisine. Katong is well known for its restaurants serving Peranakan cuisine and particularly, a spicy Straits Chinese noodle soup called Katong Laksa. (wiki)
Joo Chiat Road is an arterial road and a residential conservation area in the eastern part of Singapore, and is located between Geylang Serai and Marine Parade Road. (wiki)

Walking in SINGAPORE ???????? Joo Chiat Road - 4K 60fps (UHD)
The Joo Chiat Road in Singapore is special due to the heritage of the area. Different cultures settled there for a multiethnic mix - Peranakan (Strait Chinese), Eurasian as well as Indian and Malay.
We start at the Changi Road intersection near the Joo Chiat Complex and walk the complete Joo Chiat Road to the East Coast Park and the ocean.
While the centre of Singapore is modern with malls and skyscrapers, the Joo Chiat road has a more traditional style with Chinese shophouses. At night many KTV bars provide entertainment for the locals while plenty of eateries give a taste of various South East Asian dishes. Near the coast we see the common apartment buildings of locals making Singapore a densely populated city-state.

The Stylers (Singapore) - Di Tanjong Katong - Slide Show
Music is from The STYLERS' Visit Malaysia 1990 album. Rhythm guitarist Randy Lee has since told me that this album was initially released by the band under the name Our Songs, Vol. 1.
This prolific recording group began in the 1960's and thrived through the 70's and beyond, releasing a long string of popular guitar instrumental dance music.
I found these old photos at the National Archives of Singapore website:
The STYLERS' Di Tanjong Katong is perfect for this little slide show that shows life in Katong and Joo Chiat area in the early 1960's as I remember it.
Katong Beach and Joo Chiat was where I grew up in the late 50's and early 60's. The area has changed a lot since then, as the slide show also shows the neighbourhood as it looks today.
My beloved Katong Beach is no longer where it used to be, but has been moved farther south.

From Wikipedia :
Katong Shopping Centre (Chinese: 加东购物中心) is a shopping mall located along Mountbatten Road in Singapore. Established in 1971 and opened to the public in 1973, it is the first air-conditioned mall in Singapore. Katong Shopping Centre is situated around Odeon Theater, Church of the Holy Family, and Roxy Square, as well as several hotels, such as Paramount Hotel and the Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel. The aging mall was once home to mostly textile, shoe and food outlets, and now houses a large number of services which include tailoring, photocopying/printing and several employment agencies.
Katong Shopping Centre is among a handful of malls undergoing en bloc sales.
In mid January 2010, 80% of the 410 owners gave their approval to the en bloc sales. Owners were expected to receive a reserve price of at least $2000 per sq ft.
In August 2011, the mall embarked on its first attempt at en bloc sales, slated to be completed in mid-2012. But the $445 million deal fell through. Back then, the apportioned value to each owner was an average of $2,000 to $2,800 per square foot.
As of June 2014, the second attempt is now on again. The asking price could be higher than in the first attempt in 2011. But pricing has been a big issue and could continue to be a sticking point, with some units at the mall transacting at attractive prices recently. According to Squarefoot Research, a small shop unit at the mall was sold for a record price of more than $6,300 per square foot in May 2014. Two months earlier, another shop fetched over $4,200 psf.
