USA: RIVER CONSIDERED TO BE MOST POLLUTED WATERWAY IN US
English/Nat
It's considered an embarrassment to both the United States and Mexico.
Cutting the border between the two countries east of San Diego, the New River is considered the most polluted waterway in the United States.
Residents are blaming a range of local illnesses on the pollution.
It cuts the U.S.-Mexican border about 120 miles (192 kms) east of San Diego.
The New River, characterized by garbage and trash, has been a continuing embarrassment for both countries.
It's been a dumping ground for residents and factories nearby for years.
SOUNDBITE:
It's recognized as one of the most polluted rivers, if not the most polluted river, in the United States.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Wolfe, Imperial County Environmental Manager
Tom Wolfe is the Environmental Health Director for California's Imperial County, which borders the New River.
He says the river has become a toxic soup of waste and garbage.
SOUNDBITE:
It's full of sewage and domestic sewage and, ah, the chemical effluents from a number of manufacturing plants from a city of almost 2.5 (m) million people.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Wolfe
This is Mexicali, Mexico, which sits directly on the banks of the New River.
It's also capital of the Mexican state of Baja.
U.S. officials blame poor sewage treatment and lax Mexican environmental regulations for much of the pollution.
For residents across the border in the U.S. town of El Centro, they fear the river is silently harming their health.
SOUNDBITE:
Well, it's pretty scary, because we live right here in this town. So, I don't know how it's affecting us. It's a concern to me.
SUPER CAPTION: Nancy Roach, El Centro Resident
But experts say unsightly garbage is not the only problem of the New River.
Industrial discharges also produce unseen, microscopic dangers.
SOUNDBITE:
There are times when the pollution levels are such and the wind level is such that we see foam, which has most of the microorganisms which have disease, blown out of the river into areas here people live and they go to shop and that sort of thing.
SUPER CAPTION: Tom Wolfe, Imperial County Environmental Manager
For years, residents have blamed the river for a variety of illnesses from rashes to flu- like sickness.
But they know who should take care of the cleanup.
SOUNDBITE:
Mexico and the United States, both countries.
SUPER CAPTION: Jose Rodriguez, El Centro Resident
The U.S. and Mexico have agreed to undertake a new cleanup study.
But residents worry that nothing will be done, and it will be the same old story on the New River.

State Police Interrupt a Gold Mining Operation in Oregon!
Our mining claim neighbors called the Cops! People living on the other side of the river where our mining claim is and not liking our mining, called the cops. It appears our neighbors just did not want their liberal utopia disturbed so they call the cops to harass us. The police were very cool as I knew one of them from checking our permits on another river couple months earlier and an Oregon DEQ meeting he showed up at. The rude lady yells to at from other side of river you need a permit to do that...we had them of course. She also told cops we were disrespecful and rude to her...which was totally false. She made up her own narrative about what was happening to justify her being annoyed. Liberal tactic # 3, change the narrative or just plain lie!
This is the short version of the video, filmed on the Applegate River in Oregon while we were LEGALLY GOLD MINING!
In the video, it is a continuous video, shot on my GoPro camera that I was wearing on my head. The video shows me mining and moving around with no editing to show what actually goes on while mining. Then my buddy is helping me move rocks while I'm using a sub-surface dredge...then the cops show up , and I tell him is where the action starts.
UPDATE Jan 1st, 2015: In response to some of the comments saying we are uneducated, rednecks and other stuff...the guys in the video are as follows. One is a millionaire CPA, another a self employed business owner, two others are also self employed and owns a body shop and the other an internet marketer and freelance videographer, and lastly one is the son of the CPA guy and currently in college.
Oregon Mining Law:
Next time this happens, I will ask the State Police to cite the offending people who disrupt our mining operation based on this Oregon Mining Law:
ORS 517.133 Interfering with a mining operation. (1) As used in this section, lawful mining operation means any small scale mining operation that is in full compliance with state and federal laws.
(2) A person commits the crime of interfering with a mining operation if the person intentionally:
(a) Interferes with a lawful mining operation; or
(b) Stops, or causes to be stopped, a lawful mining operation.
(3) Interfering with a mining operation is a Class C misdemeanor. [1999 c.354 §6]

This ~20 Mile section of the Manistee River, hiked between Hodenpyl Dam and Red Bridge River Access Site in the Huron-Manistee River National Forest, is easily one of the finest hikes in Michigan's lower peninsula. For roughly 10 miles, the Manistee River is completely undeveloped, with no roads crossing it or homes along side it.

signed numbered and dated, hand carved coup stick, face and hands, hand made with love!
Counting coup refers to the winning of prestige in battle by the Plains Indians of North America. Warriors won prestige by acts of bravery in the face of the enemy, and these acts could be recorded in various ways and retold as stories. Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior with the hand, bow, or with a coup stick then escaping unharmed.[1][2] Touching the first enemy to die in battle or touching the enemy's defensive works also counted as coup.[1] Counting coup could also involve stealing an enemy's weapons or horses tied up to his lodge in camp.[1] Risk of injury or death was required to count coup

The Au Sable River in Michigan, United States runs approximately 138 miles (222 km)[2] through the northern Lower Peninsula, through the towns of Grayling and Mio, and enters Lake Huron at Oscoda. It is considered one of the best brown trout fisheries east of the Rockies and has been designated a blue ribbon trout stream by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.[3] In French, au sable literally means with sand. A 1795 map calls it the Beauais River.

EAST CHINA TWP. — Who needs a she shed when you can have a tiny floathouse?
East China resident Jim Mittler builds and sells tiny houseboats, capitalizing on the trend towards bijou versions of full-size houses. He said he started the business, called Tiny Floathouse, last summer.
This is No. 2, he said, sitting comfortably in a tiny floathouse rocking at his dock in the St. Clair River. No. 3 is about completed in the back.
We're only hoping to do four to five this year, and eight to 10 next year.
Mittler is an engineer — he previously was employed in the petroleum industry — and the attention to detail shows. He hand-builds the boats, and each joint is cut and fitted meticulously with little or no space showing. His wife, Blanca, helps with the painting.
The tiny floathouses are making waves.
We're getting interest from Seattle to Key Largo, he said. From artists looking to make a little studio behind the house to someone looking to start an Airbnb.
More: Turning your hobby into a business
Mittler said he drew his inspiration from his neighbor's boathouse, which has had previous lives as a canoe and boat livery and a shop selling summer clothing. He said such buildings are now restricted, so he came up with the idea of a floating cottage.
I have been on and around boats all my life, and I've always loved boats, Mittler said. He has worked as a deckhand on a Great Lakes freighter, as a salvage diver and towboat captain and as a marine mechanic.

The structures sit on two pontoons. The boats are 24 feet long, and the enclosed space is 8 by 12 feet, leaving room for a front porch.
The interior features a large acrylic hatch in the floor, or moonpool that can be lifted to allow access to the water.

There's an adage that fishing is the most fun a person can have out of bed, but add a futon, lift the hatch and drop a hook, and you're living the dream.
It's lit with LEDs, so it's amazing at night, Mittler said.
The boats come with a 25 horsepower outboard motor, lights and electricity, and running and steering gear, but are otherwise unfurnished.
That's part of the fun, Mittler said. You go to the flea market and fit it out the way you want it.
He said the motor is just big enough to get the boat from a launch to dockside.
This is a tiny house, Mittler said. It doesn't need to go fast. Let's slow down and enjoy things.
It's really meant to stay at your dock.
The tiny houseboat draws people's attention, he said.
Everywhere you go, people go crazy, Mittler said.
When it's in the driveway, we'll get maybe 10 people a day who'll stop to look at it, he said.
The base price for the tiny floathouse is $25,000.
Each structure is slightly different, Mittler said. The engineering has to match the hull, and every hull is slightly different.
Because we're doing such a small number, the lessons we learn on the first one, we'll apply to the next one.
More: Great White, Sponge will headline St. Clair Riverfest
Mittler said he plans to use the floathouse at such river-oriented events as the fireworks shows in Marine City and St. Clair.
We're all about family and family time, he said. How can you share this space here together?
