Location
1. The Jordan River begins at Mount Hermon in the northernmost part of Israel, and flows into the Sea of Galilee, and then out and down to the Dead Sea.
2. The lower part of the river has the lowest elevation of any river in the world.
3. It’s the border between Israel and Jordan for much if its length.
4. Today, because of the high demands of water by both Israel and Jordan, little water makes it to the Dead Sea area.
Historical Background
1. The Jordan River is mentioned over 180 times in the Bible.
2. It is the main River in Israel, supplying much of the country with water.
3. Its total winding length is about 125 miles (200 km.).
4. The meaning of “Jordan” in Hebrew is “descend.” This is true of the Jordan River as it literally descends thousands of feet from its inception to its ending, and all but the beginning part is below sea level.
5. However, there’s a deeper spiritual meaning to the word. In the same way we must descend to access the Jordan River’s waters, spiritually we must descend and humble ourselves before we can ascend spiritually. This concept is seen in many of the miracles that happened in and around its shores.
Places of Interest

Baptized in the Jordan River
Witness a baptism at the Jordan River baptismal place, Yardenit, in Israel
Season 1, Episode 23
Baptism in the Jordan River - Tour Israel
Baptism in the Jordan River - When you tour with Maranatha Tours we will take you to Yardenit, also known as the Yardenit Baptismal Site which is frequented by Christian pilgrims. The baptism site located along the Jordan River in the Galilee region of northern Israel.
The baptism of Jesus (Matthew, 3:13-17) actually took place in Qasr el Yahud, north of the Dead Sea and east of Jericho. For centuries, Qasr al Yahud was the most important baptism site for pilgrims, and monasteries and guest houses were established near it. After the Six-Day War Qasr el Yahud became a frontier area, located on the border between the state of Israel and Jordan. As a result, the Israeli Ministry of Tourism decided to establish this site in 1981 as a replacement site. As a result, Yardenit became the only regulated baptism site on the Israeli side of the river, until the reopening of Qasr el Yahud site in 2011.

Jordan River
Recorded October 28, 2009.
The Jordan River or River Jordan flows into the Dead Sea. It is considered to be one of the world's most sacred rivers. It is 156 miles long. The river drops rapidly in a 75 kilometer run to swampy Lake Hula, which is slightly above sea level. Exiting the lake, it drops much more in about 25 kilometers to the Sea of Galilee. The last section has less gradient, and the river begins to meander before it enters the Dead Sea, which is about 400 metres below sea level and has no outlet. Two major tributaries enter from the east during this last phase: the Yarmouk River and Jabbok River. Its section north of the Sea of Galilee within the boundaries of Israel, and forms the western boundary of the Golan Heights. South of the lake, it forms the border between the Kingdom of Jordan (to the east) and Israel and the West Bank (to the west).

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Jordan River 9/1/2018
September 1, 2018
At 251 miles (360 kilometers) in length, the Jordan River is a major river flowing into the Dead Sea and is relatively the lowest elevation of any river in the world.
The river also played a significant role in Christian history culminating with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist.
Despite the rediscovery of the “Bethany Beyond Jordan” (Christ’s baptismal site) inside the Jordan territory, the influx of tourists remain a challenge and in stark comparison to Israel’s that shares half of the river’s territory in the west bank, and which enjoys a high concentration on biblical tourism.

JORDAN RIVER (יַרְדֵּן, yarden; Ἰορδάνης, Iordanēs). A river that flows from Mount Hermon, south to the Sea of Galilee, then to the Dead Sea.
The Name
The origin of the name is debated. It has been linked with the Hebrew ירד (yrd)—“Descender”—and with the region of Dan—“the River of Dan.” It has also been linked with the Hebrew דן (dn)—“the River of Judges” or “Water Judges.”
Geographic Details
The Jordan Rift was one of the four major vertical divisions of Israel, with the Coastal Plains and the Central Mountain Range to the west and the Transjordanian Highlands to the east. This latter section shares considerable overlap with the Jordan Rift, as the Plains of Jordan include portions of Moab, which is typically associated with the Transjordan region. The Jordan Rift consisted of the Jordan River and its valley. Additionally, the Bible refers to the Jordanian Wilderness—also called the Plains of Jordan or the Jordan Jungle—which is a subregion of the Jordan Valley.
The Jordan River is the largest river in Israel. It is formed from three tributaries just south of Mount Hermon in the northern region. These three tributaries—the Bareighit, the Hasbani, and the Banias—intersect at Lake Huleh. Huleh is roughly fifteen miles north of the Sea of Galilee, the next major body of water along the path of the Jordan. After the Sea of Galilee, the river flows south through the length of the country in a winding path for 135 miles until it terminates into the Dead Sea. Between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea, the Jordan connects with a number of tributaries, the most important of which are the Yarmuk River and the Jabbok.
The Jordan is the world’s lowest-elevation river, and flows lower than sea level for much of its length. The river averages between 2 and 10 feet deep and 100 feet wide for most of the year; spring flooding increases both dimensions depending upon the amount of rain received during those months.
Theological Significance
The Jordan is mentioned over 180 times in the Old Testament and 15 times in the New Testament. It is first mentioned in Gen 13:10 when Lot admires the land “like the garden of Yahweh.” This description designates the Jordan as a border between the promised land and the outside world—an idea also underlying references in Gen 32:10 and Gen 50:10–11.
The Jordan’s importance as a boundary of the promised land is found again in both Numbers and Joshua. Joshua’s crossing of the Jordan was a demonstration that:
1. the exodus was over
2. the conquest had begun
3. God remained with Joshua even as He had remained with Moses.
To celebrate these things, Joshua set up memorial stones at Gilgal (Josh 3–4).
Elijah also crosses the Jordan prior to his ascension, and the river is prominent in Elisha’s miracles—the parting of the Jordan (2 Kgs 2:14), the healing of Naaman (2 Kgs 5:9–14), and the floating ax head (2 Kgs 6:4–7). Elisha’s healing of Naaman established a connection between the Jordan and purification. This was later continued in the ministry of John the Baptist and later still in the ministry of Jesus (John 3:22–4:3). The idea of cleansing is a natural theological connection with the conception of the Jordan as a border to the Holy Land: one must be purified in order to approach the holy places.
Political and Military Significance
The Jordan served as an eastern boundary for Israel. When Joshua led the tribes into the promised land, it was the crossing of the Jordan that signified the end of the wilderness wanderings (Josh 3). The fact that some of the tribes remained east of the Jordan was a point of concern at the time, as they appeared to be rejecting the promised land (Num 32:6–7). Nonetheless, half of the tribe of Manasseh, the tribe of Gad, the tribe of Reuben, and three of the Levitical Cities of Refuge—Golan, Ramoth-Gilead, and Bezer—remained to the east of the Jordan River. This indicates that the Jordanian boundary was not a major political divider of the nation. At the same time, it was a natural geographic division: the later borders of Samaria and Judaea terminated at the Jordan (Ezek 47:18).
Unlike the Nile River in Egypt, the Jordan River was not economically important for Israel. The deep, rocky banks of the river precluded any significant irrigation efforts. Its shallowness and rockiness also made navigation difficult and costly (”Jordan (River and Valley),” AEHL). However, the steady flow of water and the abundant vegetation of the region ensured its inhabitation throughout history. The Jordan Valley is one of the earliest settled areas of the world.
The walls of the Jordan Valley made it a very defensible area. The Jordan River is not easily forded either, which forced enemies to either take control of the fords or attack the nation via a northern or southern route.

Baptism - Jordan River Israel Tour
The Jordan River. Israel and Palestine border the river to the west, while Jordan lies to its east. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan takes its name from this river.
The river has significance in Judaism and Christianity, where Jesus of Nazareth was baptized by John the Baptist.
