The stone walls constructed by Ano-shu (Shiga, Japan)
The town of Sakamoto in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture originally prospered as a shrine town built around the two major shrines of Enryaku-ji and the Hiyoshi Taisha. Many traces of the town's past still remain even today, and you can see where Enryaku-ji's monks retired at satobo, as well as the houses people lived in, and the old fences. The famous stone walls here were built by a historic stonemason society called Anoshu. The stones were stacked together without processing the stones found in nature, utilizing the surfaces and corners of the stone to hold them together. A particular feature of the walls is the variety of stone sizes. Anoshu is also said to have been involved in the construction of castles such as Azuchi Castle, Fushimi Castle, and Nagoya Castle. The stone walls surrounding the satobo on the road to Hiyoshi Taisha are particularly beautiful, and this is a very popular spot. On the north side of Hiei Sakamoto Station there is a statue of Saicho who opened the Tendai Buddhist sect in Japan, as well as Shogenji's temple bell. When the samurai Oda Nobunaga laid siege to Mt. Hiei and set it ablaze, it was said that this bell was rung to alert the villagers of what was going on. In addition to the Hiyoshi Taisha and Enryaku-ji, there are numerous other tourist attractions such as the Hiyoshi Toshogu, Saiko-ji, the Hakko-do Sentai Jizo, Hiyoshi Chaen, and Sakamoto castle ruins.

【JAPAN #5 Shiga 】 CASTLE TOWN!! Shiga, Japan with Kamon-chan / Mascots TOUR ★GKT47/
【Japan 47 prefectures tour with Gotouchi Kyara mascots!】
全米No.1コメディアンへの道GT47 】PLEASE LIKE, SHEARE&SUBSCRIBE!!!!!!
My Crowdfunding Project GKT47 is the project that I trip all prefectures in Japan and broadcast each mascot character (Yurukyara/Gotouchi Kyara) and its attraction.
.
I set my target by 2020 as to be the US No.1 comedian.
One of its steps, I am introducing Japan with humor all over the world as a representative of Japan!
【Shiga prefecture】
The largest Japanese lake, Biwa-ko. Enryaku-ji Temple, the World Cultural Heritage, and national treasures are on the lakeshore.
The prefecture of Shiga is in the middle of Japan; Lake Biwa a.k.a Mother Lake , the largest lake in Japan, lies at its center. It is surrounded by Mt. Ibuki to the northeast, the Suzuka Mountain Range to the east, Mt. Hira-san and Mt. Hiei-zan to the west, and the Shigaraki Mountains lie to the south.
They have annual local mascots' festival called Hikone Gotochi Kyara Matsuri along the castle town of Hikone castle whose donjon is designated as a national treasure.
Also there are a number of precious heritage sites, including Hiei-zan Enryaku-ji Temple, designated as World Cultural Heritage, Hikone Castle designated as a national treasure, and many famous Buddhist images. Shiga is one of the richest areas in Japan for national treasures and important cultural properties.
You can also enjoy Shigaraki ware pottery, noted for statuettes of raccoon dogs, Otsu-e pictures with their vivid colors, and other traditional arts and crafts. Delicious food treats include traditional sushi, with fermented freshwater fish called Funa-zushi, which has been enjoyed since the 8th century; also try Omi beef to tempt your palate. Not to be missed is the Hikiyama-matsuri Festival where decorative floats parade through the city in spring.
irections

2h 15 min to Kyoto Station by JR Tokaido Shinkansen Line, and 10 min from Kyoto to Otsu Station by JR Tokaido Line.
From Osaka:

Hiyoke Jizo Bosatsu protecting Kyoto against Fire!
The temple, originally called Otagi Temple was first built at Higashiyama ward (Otagi District in the past) around from 764 to 770 according to the temple history. At the beginning of the Heian period (794-1192), the temple building was washed away when the Kamo River flooded. It was reestablished by Senkan Naigu (918-984), a priest from Mt. Hiei in the north east of Kyoto, so that the temple became a branch of the Enryakuji complex of the Tendai sect, named The temple, originally called Otagi Temple was first built at Higashiyama ward (Otagi District in the past) around from Tokakuzan Otagiin. In 1922, the temple was transferred to this place in order to preserve the main hall.
The gate of the temple contains two fierce-looking Nio statues.
There is a wonderful array of 1200 carved stone figures of Rakan (disciples of Shaka, the founder of Buddhism) made by visitors, taught by sculptor Kocho Nishimura, which show a peaceful atmosphere. These statues, in keeping with rakan traditions, are generally humorous and kawaii. The sculptures were donated in 1981 in honor of the refurbishment of the temple.
The main hall was reconstructed in the middle of the Kamakura period (1192-1333), having the style of Japanese architecture and enshrining the image of Senjukannon.
In the Jizo Hall, a Jizo image known as the Hiyoke Jizo Bosatsu (Jizo Bodhisattva symbolizing protection against fire) is enshrined to protect Kyoto against fire, since the God of extinguishing the fire inhabiting Mt. Atago is a Jizo Bosatsu.

Ringing a huge Japanese bell at Engyoji Temple, Mt. Shosha near Himeji, Japan
Usually these bells are only sounded at festivals or special events, but this one was on the walking path. The small sign said that it was to be rung for the benifit of all beings, so I invited it to sound.
Atmospheric Tendai Buddhist temple complex was used for the set in movie The Last Samurai, it's right outside of Himeji and can easily be reached by bus + a gondola ride up the mountain. Great side trip if you are visiting Himeji castle (Himeji-jo).
