Backpacking The Hangover - Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness, NC
A scattershot video from a 3-day backpacking trip in the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness of Nantahala National Forest, NC. My original plan was do ~28 miles through the wilderness and wind up on Bob Bald on Monday to watch the solar eclipse, which was only a few miles from the central path of totality. Instead I made base camp at The Hangover to hang out with new friends from Tennessee and Florida and watch the eclipse from the summit.
At the start I did both loops through Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest to see some of the largest and oldest trees in the East. Then I took the Naked Ground Connector Trail (many blowdowns), the Jenkins Meadow Trail (dry, dusty, and steep), and the Haoe Lead Trail to the top of Haoe Bald. From there it was a short drop into Saddle Tree Gap and The Hangover, a rock pinnacle covered in mountain laurel with fantastic views of the Unicoi and Great Smoky Mountains. After meeting and hanging out with the TN crew (Randy, Marti, and Art), I decided to stay there, drink their free tequila, and day hike to Bob Bald instead. The next day Randy Draper and I did a casual day hike to Bob Bald on the Haoe Lead and Stratton Bald Trails, watched sunset from The Hangover, and chilled by the fire.
On Monday I got out to The Hangover at 8AM, second person there, and sat on the western rocks for 7 hours with my umbrella and chair with the TN and FL groups. On the tiny summit there were easily 50+ people and many hikers who turned around. I failed miserably at capturing the eclipse, but it didn't matter. After the eclipse ended I packed up and flew down the trail to my car. Great trip, awful traffic on the way back. It was great meeting new friends who provided me with tequila, sausage, and warm hard root beer!
Hike was 19.1 miles over 3 days.

Old Growth Trees | Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
Finally made a visit to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest to see the old growth trees during peak Fall color season! Some of these trees, like the tulip poplars, are 450 years old!
The forest is one of the last in the US to contain virgin hardwood and is an incredible testament to Mother Nature's beauty when left alone! I read Joyce Kilmer's (the park's namesake) poem, Trees, as a tribute to this magnificent place.

Travel Bites: Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is located about 15 miles from Robbinsville, NC in one of the most scenic areas of the state and just minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This forest is an untouched wilderness meaning that the park service does not remove fallen branches, dead trees or anything else. It is allowed to grow as if humans have never disturbed it. That results in the main reason people visit, the trees that are so large from having grown untouched for up to 400 years.

Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest - January 14, 2018
A short clip of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest in North Carolina. It contains a few of the ancient trees which were not cut down during the mass clear cutting of the Appalachian Forest 100+ years ago. You should visit this location to see these beauties before they are lost to age and storms. Peace!

18 Miles in the Slickrocks, Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest
This might be the wettest trail I've done yet. I believe I was lead to cross Slickrock Creek 3,257 times in the span of 9 to 10 miles, which in my experience is unheard of in terms of creek crossings. My canine friends joined me for longer than you'd think: the youngest ruddy colored fella stayed by my side for nearly 3 miles.
