The most famous among these temples is the Joy Dol, also known as the Kesavanarayan Vishnudole. As the name suggests, the temple is devoted to Lord Vishnu and His many incarnations. The temple was constructed in the year 1734 and has an octagonal shaped Garbhagriha, which is the most sacred shrine located within the temple.
The Garbhagriha of Joy Dol is decorated by honey-comb designs and lotus medallions and stands adorned by a dome like structure. The western side of the temple has a square shaped mandapa. This connects to the sanctum, through an antara or vestibule.
Besides the main sanctum in Joy Dol, there are two small temples, located behind the main shrine, dedicated to Lord Surya and Ganesha respectively. The exquisite architectural designs and patterns of the temple are indeed like a feast to the eyes of the beholder and people come from far and wide to appreciate these ancient creations of the Ahom Dynasty. The month of Bhada (as per the Hindu calendar) is very special for this temple. Naam-kirtans and prayers are held throughout the month, to honor Lord Vishnu. This is, in fact, the best month to visit the place.
Interesting History:
Joymoti, or Joymoti Konwari was the wife of Ahom Prince Gadapani and mother of Rudra Singha. During reign of Sulikphaa or Ratnadhwaj Singha, generally mentioned in history as a boy king and couldn't control atrocities in his rule, The most notorious act which occurred during his reign was the mutilation of other Ahom princes. While most of the Ahom princes suffered mutilation, Prince Gadapani, the future king Gadadhar Singha escaped, due to the efforts of his illustrious wife, Joymati Konwari. Failing to trace Prince Gadapani, Sulikphaa’s soldiers brought his wife Joymoti to get information from her. Despite brutal and inhuman torture, the princess never revealed the whereabouts of her husband. After continuous physical torture over 14 days, Joymoti breathed her last on 27 March, AD 1680.Her sacrifice didn’t went in vain,Prince Gadapani became King. Her sacrifice is still remembered through local folklore, people remember her with honour Sati.
Joymoti and Gadapani’s eldest son Rudra Singha had built Joydol at the spot where she was tortured. In honour of the memory of his mother Joymoti, Rudra Singha built the Joysagar Tank in 1697 at Sibsagar. It is believed to be the biggest man-made lake in India. Soti Joymoti Divas, commemoration day of Soti Joymoti, is held annually in Assam on 27 March

EPIC Indian Breakfast FOOD TOUR + Ahom Kingdom Historical Sites | Sivasagar, Assam, India
India is a country of wonders. There are beautiful, exciting, and brand-new experiences around every corner. There’s so much to see and do, and each region and state is different from the last. While you’re there, you must visit the northeast region of the country, which is so different from every other part of India. It was a blast to explore!
Follow Afzal on Instagram: instagram.com/arshad_afzaal97
After spending a couple of days exploring Jorhat and nearby Majuli Island, my friend Afzal and I set out on a day trip to Sivasagar, the capital of the Ahom Kingdom for over six centuries! There are lots of monuments and historical sites there and I couldn’t wait to check them out!
We started off at Maar Akhol Restaurant, an ethnic restaurant that’s right across the street from Rang Ghar, an 18th-century sports arena. We would go there later. Now, it was time to eat!
The entire restaurant was built on stilts and made of wood and bamboo. I ordered a Mughlai paratha, which contained chicken, chilies, and egg, and sipped a delicious, milky chai while I waited for my order.
It was cut into four squares and reminded me of an Argentine empanada. I loved the combination of the bread, chicken, spices, and chilies! I tried it with a spicy, green chili sauce. There was so much chicken in it that it was falling apart!
I would have loved some mint or tamarind chutney with it, but it was still a phenomenal breakfast. It only cost 100 rupees/roughly $1.43 U.S., while my friends’ aloo parathas cost 60 rupees/about $0.86 U.S. each.
I took some amazing mouth fresheners before we left and headed over to Rang Ghar. It costs 300 rupees/$4.29 U.S. for foreigners to enter and only 25 rupees/$0.36 U.S. for Indian residents.
The Rang Ghar is a royal pavilion where the king and other spectators would watch bird and animal fights and cultural programs. It was Asia’s first amphitheater and was built by the Ahom king Pramatta Singha.
It’s beautiful! It reminded me of some of the royal tombs I saw in Delhi. We saw where the king would watch the bullfights from and then headed upstairs. It’s more of a viewing point than an arena and is made out of mud bricks. The architecture is stunning!
Then we headed to eat again! We rode through the town and arrived at Chaulung, which sells sweets and baked goods. I ordered a potato samosa, an onion pakora, and more chai!
I loved the onion in the pakora. It reminded me of a blooming onion! The samosa was lightly fried and doughy on the inside. I loved the spices in it! I tried some chili sauce on it, but it wasn’t that hot. My total was only 20 rupees!
There were lots of vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and other items. I got some gold bangles for my wife for 7500 rupees/roughly $107 U.S. each. Then we stopped by the Sivasagar Sivadol, the biggest Shiva temple in all of Asia at 104 feet high. It’s also the oldest and was built in 1730.
A man there put some tikka on my forehead and tied a wristband around my wrist. I tipped him for blessing me and giving me the wristband and rang the bells inside the temple. You bow as you pass through the doorway to the Shiva linga, where people make offerings with flowers, fruit, and milk. You have to be careful because there are a lot of pigeons there, but visiting the linga is such a beautiful cultural experience. Experiences like this is why I love travel.
Outside, we saw lit candles, which are offerings to the gods for more wishes, which differs from Catholicism, where you make a prayer to someone who has passed. Behind the temple is a huge pond called Joysagar Pukhri, which is said to have been dug in one night and filled with water.
There are ducks and geese there as well as vendors and a nice viewpoint where you can look out over the lake. It’s beautiful, but unfortunately, there was also a lot of garbage around the shores.
Then we headed out to look for some sweets! We found some at the Rasraj Hotel, where we got a confection that Sivasagar is famous for and more chai. It’s a super dense bar with chocolate, milk, and jaggery and reminded me of a Colombian dessert. It was delicious!
I hope you enjoyed my tour of Sivasagar! If you did, please give it a thumbs up and leave a comment. Also, please subscribe to my channel!

Gaurisagar Borpukhuri (Tank) : Gaurisagar Tank is located at a distance of about 12 km from the centre of the Sivasagar town. This tank was built about 200 years ago and has three temples dedicated to Goddess Durga and her various forms built on the banks of the tank. The tank along with the temples was constructed by Bor-Raja Phuleswari Konweri, the queen of Assam, who was a follower of the Sakta branch of Hinduism and even endeavoured to make Shaktism the state religion of Assam. This led to the Moamoria rebellion as the Moamoria people were forced to offer their prayers to Goddess Durga.
Spread over an area of 150 acres the vast tank and the three temples serve as a major tourist attraction. Devotees from all over Assam and other parts of the country come to this place to offer their prayers. The tank and its adjacent areas also serve as a great picnic spot for tourists.
