Hiking the Beautiful Juan de Fuca Trail
SUBSCRIBE:
My friends Jordan & Sandra joined me to hike the Juan de Fuca trail on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.
Follow our journey from the China Beach trailhead through the forest, mud, and beach, tough ups and downs, with sights of the animals that live in this beautiful Pacific coast ecosystem.
We couldn't hike the entire trail (due to time constraints) but we did 30km of it in 3 days, which gave us lots of time to soak in the incredible experience this trail provides!
Thanks for watching!

Great Canadian Parks #20- Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, B.C.
This park is a 73 km hiking trail stretching along the western shoreline of Southern Vancouver Island, along the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It offers a rugged beauty & is known for its series of tide pools teeming with sea stars, anemones, barnacles, crabs & sea urchins. The serene seal grotto is a birthing den for hundreds of seals, and Northern Sea Lions frequent the park's offshore waters.

4 Days in the Back Country - Juan de Fuca Marine Trail - BEAR!
Four of us hiked through the back country on The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail in British Columbia, Canada. We started at Botanical Beach, and hiked 47 km down to China Beach over three nights and four days. We highly recommend stretching this out over five or six days instead of only four. The terrain was much more challenging than we anticipated and we had to skip some primo campsites in order to make it back in time. Slow down and absorb the coastal surroundings. It is magical.

Mystic Beach | Juan de Fuca Marine Trail
One of the many great things about living on Vancouver Island is the ability to hike out to incredible places like Mystic Beach | Juan de Fuca Marine Trail. An hour out of Victoria is this beautiful part of the world.
The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail is a rugged 47-kilometre wilderness hiking trail located within Juan de Fuca Provincial Park along the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island. The trail stretches from China Beach, 35 km west of Sooke, to Botanical Beach, just outside Port Renfrew.
Panoramic views of the coastline, Juan de Fuca Strait and the Olympic Mountains can be seen from many points along this rainforest trail. Lucky are those who spot a pod of whales, but it is not uncommon to view sea lions, bald eagles, herons and other wildlife.
The trail can be hiked in part, as a day hike, or backpacked in its entirety in four to six days. Unlike the longer West Coast Trail (75 km), the Juan de Fuca Trail does not require a reservation; however, there is a backcountry camping fee of $10 per person/per night.

Today we are going on a hike on the Kludahk. There are some rumours that the Kludahk is a secret society. This is perhaps because they have a membership process, it is in the back country, located in an environmentally sensitive area and the roads to access the Kludahk can often be washed out and signage is not that great to get there.
Kludahk is Nuu-chah-nulth for “home of the elk”. The trail passes through the Pacheedaht peoples of Port Renfrew traditional territory. The late Chief, Kenny Jones, named the trail in honour of this special place.
For our hike, we walked about 10 km of the 48 km trail that runs east to west along the San Juan Ridge. The Kludahk parallels the Juan de Fuca Straight between Jordan River and Port Renfrew. Many of you will also know the West Coast Trail, well the Kludahk parallels some of the 75 km West Coast Trail is part of the ancient paths and paddling routes used for trade and travel by First Nations in the Pacific Rim National Park.
Going for a hike on the Kludahk today is super special because for up to 6-7 months of the year, from November to June, the trail is covered with snow. It is not unusual for the trail to get 25 feet of snow, in which case the trail is not visible. In the autumn and spring the trails are very wet. Because the Kludahk passes through a number of meadows and bogs, it is important to protect the trail from too much of a ¨footprint.¨ That leaves a few weeks in the summer months to explore the trail!
In the summer, it will take you 3 days to hike the 40 km of the Kludahk trail if you are super fit. However if you want to enjoy the scenery it is recommended that you take 4 nights and 5 days. That way you can enjoy your time and your surroundings.
Anybody can become a member of the Kludahk society. Membership is $35/year for individuals and $50 for families, along with your agreement to do be involved in the work of maintaining the trail and the application process.
The Kludahk society maintains the brush, hauls in the tread plates you saw us hiking across, they clear blowdowns and they maintain the cabins. The Kludahk society has built 5 cabins along the trail which provide shelter for day hikers. If you want to stay overnight in a cabin, you must be a member of the Kludahk. The cabins are open and as you can see we went in and had a look around. You can take refuge from the weather, or bugs, or make a cup of tea or a meal. There is wood and any other supplies you might need there available for donation.
Of course, the biggest surprise of our day were the wasps which were stinging, multiple times and multiple people in our party. I don´t know if it was the time of the year or if the nests had been disturbed, but if you are allergic, come prepared!
Let us know what you liked best about our hike, please comment, like and subscribe.

Juan De Fuca Trail, Vancouver Island
The 47 km long Juan De Fuca Marine Trail, done with a friend during a road trip from Jasper to Vancouver Island and back. We hiked it in 3 relaxing days.
West Coast Wild - Hiking the Juan de Fuca Trail
The Juan de Fuca Trail may not be as familiar a name as the world famous West Coast Trail, but if you ask us this is a good thing. Its relative obscurity means that it is a much less crowded, yet equally stunning way to experience Vancouver Island's ruggedly idyllic West Coast. The Juan de Fuca trail boasts some seriously challenging terrain, but without the extensive ladder and boardwalk network of its more famous sibling. This, in our opinion, makes the experience feel more organic and creates a deeper connection between hiker and trail. Point, Juan de Fuca.
We started our 4 night trek on August 11, 2016, during the peak of the Perseid Meteor Showers and were treated to a clear night sky we won't soon forget. The rest of the trip was a mixed bag of typical West Coast weather - sun, fog, rain, repeat.
All in all, it was a highly enjoyable and highly recommendable trip.

Good times hiking with the Canadian Travel Mongers but watch out for those cliffs. Not kept up as well as the West Coast Trail but still worth the hike. Watch out for the cliffs!!

Visit to Remarkable Botanical Beach on Vancouver Island
A unique part of Vancouver Island featuring spectacular wild coastline with colorful ocean tide pools & surfing ducks! We head out from Victoria over to the west side of the island near the town of Port Renfrew for a hike down to a remarkable beach.
Located in Juan De Fuca Provincial Park, Botanical Beach is home to tantalizing tide pools chock full of marine life. The pools are carved out of ancient sandstone and act like crystal clear natural aquariums. Also, as chance would have it during my visit, some cute Harlequin Ducks showed up and did some surfing in the ocean waves. They are quite the nimble little critters.
You’ll see footage from the approx 2.5 KM loop trail through the coastal forest, panoramas of the fantastic seascape, ducks in the surf, and close-ups of the tide pools. Enjoy!
