Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary - Garden Route, South Africa
Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary -
Jukani is home to numerous amounts of wild cats, a honey badger, a few zebras and a snake exhibition. You'll not only learn about these animals and their stories of how they got to the sanctuary, but see them up close.
A visit to Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary
The family took a half day trip on 8th April to Jukani. They do a great job there looking after cats that will be released back into the wild. Although some will live out their lives there as they are too domesticated by humans before being rescued.
Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary
Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Western Cape, South Africa, and is home to predator cats (such as lions, tigers and leopards) as well as hyenas, a honeybadger, zebras, a springbuck, wild dogs, a zorilla, raccoons, and a collection of various snake species. At Jukani, the focus is on conservation education and specifically the plight of large predators in captivity, in South Africa and all over the world.

Many were shoulder pets before, like most of the parrots you'll find here. Others were donated by zoos and even companies like Disneyland. The aviary is over two hectares in size and netting stretches 34 metres into the sky above.

Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre in The Crage on the Garden Route of South Africa
Via In 2001 founders Len and Mandy Freeman bought an undeveloped 46 ha piece of land in the Crags, on the Garden Route of South Africa. They started out with one little hut on the property, taking in their first injured and problem animals and nursing them back to health. Their ability to heal and rehabilitate animals quickly became known and before long they were receiving injured wild animals of all kinds.
This lead to Tenikwa registering as a fully fledged rehabilitation centre with Cape Nature Conservation. Subsequently more animals including birds, penguins, bats as well as wild cats started ending up at Tenikwa. One of these species, the cararcal is particularly persecuted in South Africa, with numbers declining at a rapid rate. Len explains that it is due to ignorance that these cats get killed and that there are in fact many alternatives to killing.

3 Amazing Wildlife Sanctuaries on the Garden Route of South Africa
The parks’ indigenous forest is home of 550 primates, 200 species of birds and some of Africa’s largest cats. Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and Jukani are animal sanctuaries like no other.
Unlike other parks, they are a place of refuge, with fare trade accreditation and environmentally sound standards. Their focus is on conservation, eco-tourism and education. The 3 parks are South’s Africa’s pioneers in reintroducing mistreated animals back into their original environment. Their common mission is to rehabilitate their “guests” back into their wild state. They are implementing a ground breaking approach in their forest and spreading the knowledge to other wildlife parks overseas. In the parks, animals feel free, healthy and happy. The parks do not allow touching, petting, playing, feeding, handling or traumatizing the animals in any way.
On guided tours in Monkey land you will see free roaming multi-species primates, including gibbons, howler monkeys, vervet monkeys, langurs, sakis, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs and the critically endangered black and white ruffed lemurs.
Birds of Eden host world’s largest single dome free-flight bird aviary in the world with over 200 different species of birds. The park is nested in 2.3 hectares of forest with waterways, suspensions bridges and natural walkaways.
Jakani is home of large cats such as lion, Bengal and Siberian tiger, jaguar, and more together with other wildlife such as the African wild dog, hyena, jackal, honey badger, zebra, raccoons.
Those 3 amazing sanctuaries are a true example of what a wildlife sanctuary should be and encourage other parks to follow the lead. There is no need to traumatize animals for the sake of tourism. It’s fun, exciting and very education to have wildlife encounters in a sanctuary where animal run free and feel happy.
Spirit Update - Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary
We wanted to give you an update about our favorite black leopard here at Jukani! We last saw Spirit after his encounter with animal communicator, Anna Breytenbach, where Spirit (previously known as Diablo) was calmed by Anna after she told him we did not expect anything from him here at Jukani and that the two leopard cubs he had been with before being rescued were also safe. Since then, Jukani has moved to an amazing location in Plettenberg Bay where Spirit, along with the two cubs - now fully grown leopards named Tess and Kito - roam happily in their own enclosure, enjoying the sunshine and their fellow Jukani neighbors. Spirit, Tess and Kito are thankful for your thoughts and well-wishes and hope to see you some day soon here at Jukani!

SAASA 2014
Located in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance is comprised of three sanctuaries (Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, and Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary) dedicated to providing homes for animals who have been abandoned, abused, or neglected. We open each sanctuary to tourists and local visitors in order to promote education and understanding, but have a no touch policy that strongly dictates our work within the sanctuaries and wildlife tourism industry. This video gives viewers a glimpse into what our sanctuaries are all about!
