Julian Travel Guide | California Travel Tips | California Ghost Towns
California travel guide Veronica Hill visits the California ghost town of Julian, San Diego, in this episode of California Travel Tips.
This charming little ghost town — located an hour from San Diego — comes alive during the fall, when it celebrates the famous Julian apple harvest. Bring along a light jacket as you explore the town's quaint stores, restaurants and delicious homemade apple pies.
Julian's mining history dates back to 1869, when San Diego experienced its first (and only) Gold Rush. Today, Main Street is filled with dozens of fun shops and attractions. You can hitch a ride on a horse and buggy, do a bit of wine tasting, or get a Western-style portrait taken at Grandpa's Old Time Photo. To learn more about Julian's mining history, join a tour at Eagle and High Peak Mine, located at the end of C Street. Train rides are available on the Smith Ranch and Julian Railroad by appointment.
Kids will enjoy panning for gold at the Julian Mining Company, or getting an old-fashioned phosphate at the Miner's Diner soda fountain. But the real draw in Julian is the apple pie, and visitors are fiercely divided on who makes the best. I'm partial to Julian Pie Company, a cozy little diner with a loyal following. Be sure to get here early, as lines quickly form out the door.
Once you've had your fill of pie, walk off the calories with a tour of Julian's pioneer cemetery and historic Gold Rush buildings. The Jacoby Building, built in 1897, was the town's original general store. The Wilcox Building, which dates back to 1872, once served as a stage coach stop and Julian's post office.
If you want to spend the night, consider staying in the Julian hotels. The Julian Gold Rush Hotel, which was built in 1897, is one of California's best B&Bs, and well worth a visit.

The Lost Ship of the Desert
Viking Longship
It was 1933, and Myrtle Botts was traveling with her husband, enjoying the famous annual wildflower bloom in what's now Anza-Borrego State Park, in the Colorado Desert of inland southern California. They met an old prospector who swore he'd seen the remains of a Viking longship protruding from the side of an arroyo, well enough preserved that the distinctive round shields were still mounted along its sides. He wrote directions for Myrtle on how to find it. A paper, purporting to be those original directions, is preserved at the Julian Pioneer Museum in Julian, California.
Following the directions, Myrtle went and found the ship. She returned to fetch her husband along, but before they could get there, an earthquake brought down the wall of the arroyo, access was blocked, and the ship has not been seen since. Erosio... (Read the rest at

Whispering Pines Cemetery and Old Beckwourth California
We want to thank you for taking the time to watch this documentary of the Beckwourth Cemetery followed by later in the video old town. Beckwourth boomed in the mid 1800's when a freed slave, trader, Indian chief, miner, scout and explorer James P. Beckwourth improved his pass which was an alternative route through the sierras as opposed to the wintry Donner Pass. Beckwourth built a small trading post in town just across from this cemetery so that pioneers could stock up to supply there wagons and barter. This video will give our viewers a look into some local history at one of California's historic ranching and lumbering towns in the Sierra Nevada mountains during the gold rush days when it all begin. Will start off on a crisp fall morning exploring a hillside of prominent pioneers who utilized the pass and settled in the area all the way to exploring some old homesteads back when Beckwourth experienced its boom. At the end of the documentary you can view our gallery from our second journey with music playing. Please make sure to check out Beckwourth on our website so you can delve in its history and honor one of the most colorful men in the wildwest at
Pe Lang at ZERO1 Biennial 2012
Swiss artist Pe Lang is one of the participants in the 2012 edition of the ZERO1 Biennial, a contemporary art event that showcases innovative artists who are working at the interface of art and technology. At the main venue of this year's ZERO1 Biennial, the ZERO1 Garage in San Jose (California), Pe Lang presents two of his works: Falling Objects and Moving Objects. In this video, Sophie Lamparter of Swissnex San Francisco provides us with an introduction to Pe Lang's work.
Pe Lang was born in Sursee (Switzerland) in 1974. He lives and works in Berlin and Zurich. He has had exhibitions in various international institutions, galleries and festivals such as Galerie Mario Mazzoli, Berlin; Sound and Space, Tokyo; Växjö Art Hall, Sweden; San Francisco Art Institute, USA. He has received numerous awards and residency fellowships such as Sitemapping/Mediaprojects Award (2011, 2008 and 2005), Swiss Art Award (2009 and 2010), and artists-in-labs residency, Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (2007).
Commissioned by ZERO1 and presented with support from Swissnex San Francisco, Pe Lang presents two artworks at ZERO1 Garage in San Jose: Moving Objects | nº 692 - 803 (2012) is an installation consisting of 128 motors, 3,000 rings, and silicon wire. While Moving Objects plays with randomness, Falling Objects | Positioning Systems (2009-2012) shows the beauty of precision. Falling Objects is a custom made machine that adds drops of water onto a special textured surface. Each drop forms into an almost perfect sphere through the surface tension of the water and the omniphopic Material. The electronically controlled pipette wanders through a square grid of 21 x 21 drops to form a micro-matrix and returns to the beginning. After approximately 300 minutes, and when the water drops have evaporated, the same process starts again.
The works are presented as part of the exhibition Seeking Silicon Valley at the ZERO1 Garage in San Jose, California, with the support from Swissnex San Francisco. Swissnex San Francisco connects people and projects between Switzerland and North America in the fields of science, education, art, and innovation. It's an initiative of Switzerland's State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER), managed in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs as an annex of the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco.
Pe Lang: Falling Objects, Moving Objects at ZERO1 Biennial 2012 San Jose (California). Introduction by Sophie Lamparter, Head of Interdisciplinary Programs, Swissnex San Francisco. ZERO1 Garage, San Jose, September 12, 2012.

SanDiegoGhostHunters 77YearsOld ElCampoSanto 2004
This EVP was captured in the El Campo Santo Cemetery in Old Town, San Diego near the Whaley House Museum in 2004. Like many EVP's, this one had to be slowed down to understand what the male spirit was saying. We have encountered many spirits of the pioneers in the El Campo Santo Cemetery and this male was very strong. We were trying to find out how old he was and his answer was creepy. First, a creepy chuckle, and then he says 77 years old, at which point the temperature drops quite a bit and you can hear our investigator say, that's weird, and then you hear the creepiest breathing! This EVP was played on the Jay Leno show and Jay only wanted to hear it once, it creeped him out so bad.
