Pinglin Village
The bulk of Pinglin Village lies along a one-kilometer stretch of Highway 9, running parallel to the Beishi River. Most of the shops on either side of the highway are devoted to hawking the area’s mainstay product: Baozhong tea. If you are in the market for a cup of tea, local vendors are more than happy to brew up samples of Baozhong and other varieties. Local restaurants serve up all manner of innovative tea-theme dishes, including chicken fried in tea oil, tea-flavored vermicelli, tea eggs, tea jelly, deep-fried tea leaves, and tea-flavored ice cream.
Qinshui Suspension Bridge
On the main highway back at the western end of the village, next to a large welcome gate, cross a small parking lot to find the 60-meter-long Qinshui Suspension Bridge, which, along with the viewing platforms on either side of it, provides visitors with an ideal vantage point for observing the high concentration of fish (in certain spots as many as 50 per cubic meter, according to one study) in the crystal-clear water of the Beishi River below. The river is divided by cement blocks into sections of calm water, enabling you to easily spot the fish.
Cycling the Fish Observation Path
The Fish Observation Path, which starts at Qinshui Suspension Bridge, is best enjoyed on two wheels. Bicycles can be rented in the village. After crossing Qinshui Suspension Bridge from the highway side, turn right and ride along the path as it follows the Beishi River downstream. Look closely and you’ll be able to see lanky egrets perched on stones along the riverbanks, preying on the abundance of fish in the water. The path soon curves to the left, and you’ll be rewarded with a commanding view over a field with rows upon rows of tea shrubs.
After crossing a small bridge, you’ll have the choice of turning right for the start of a 40-minute ride along Jingualiao Stream, or left for a shorter ride further along the Fish Observation Path as it follows a tributary, Daiyujue Creek, upstream. Choosing the latter, the further you get from the village the more idyllic the scenery becomes, with elderly farmers in conical hats tending to their tea fields on one side and turquoise pools of creek water begging to be jumped into on the other.
Pinglin Tea Museum
Back in the village, don’t miss to visit the recently renovated Pinglin Tea Museum. Built in 1997, it is an elegant white-walled facility (admission free). To get to it from the Old Street area, cross the Old Pinglin Bridge and turn left. Passing through the entrance gate brings you into a Fujian-style courtyard. To the right is a multimedia hall, where you can see (and smell) 25+ varieties of tea grown in northern Taiwan, learn how to wrap Baozhong tea in its signature square packages, and observe machinery used for separating and roasting tea leaves.
In the Exhibition Hall opposite the main entrance, learn everything you ever wanted to know about Pinglin and the history of Baozhong. Interactive exhibits cover traditional tea-picking clothing for men and women, information about the different tea-producing regions of New Taipei City, and much else, and also give you the chance to take a photo with your own face placed in an old-time Formosa tea advertisement. To the left of the courtyard, you’ll find a souvenir shop selling fine teas, tea soap, ceramic teaware, and other items, and past that you can ascend a flight of stairs to a calm south China-style garden. A small teashop on the outer wall of the museum just outside the entrance serves freshly brewed hot and cold tea to go. You’ll surely want to savor a cup when leaving the museum, now that you are an expert on the subject!

Taiwan - Sun Moon Lake
The most beautiful lake in Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is a lovely place to visit and unwind.
Located in central Taiwan, Sun Moon Lake is one of the only natural lakes in the country and arguably the most beautiful. The hiking trails and bike paths surrounding the lake are considered to be some of the most scenic on earth. If you want to get out on the water, you can either take a boat tour of the lake, stopping at many of the temples, pagodas and aboriginal villages, or you can rent a rowboat to explore the waters at your own pace.

360 Video - France train shooting: American heroes take down terrorist
PARIS — Spencer Stone, the U.S. airman who tackled a heavily armed gunman on a French train last Friday, also saved a passenger who was bleeding profusely from the neck after being shot, he said in a press conference on Sunday.
Stone, 23, along with his friends, student Anthony Sadler, 23, and National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, 22, gave more details of the foiled terrorist attack at the news conference.
I went over, saw that he was squirting blood out of the left or right side of his neck, Stone said. And I was going to use my shirt at first, but I realized that wasn't going to work, so I just stuck two of my fingers in the hole, found what I thought to be the artery, pushed down and the bleeding stopped. Stone held his fingers there until emergency crews arrived, he said.
Stone said another guy, who is French and whose name hasn't been disclosed, deserves a lot of the credit as he was the first individual to try and stop the shooter. French authorities have identified him as Ayoub el Khazzani, 26, of Morocco.
The gunman was armed with a box cutter, a Luger pistol and a Kalashnikov AK-47 rifle.
The three friends said they had to react when they saw Khazzani cocking his AK-47. Stone tackled the gunman and choked him while Skarlatos hit him on the head with the AK-47.
The gunman claimed through his lawyer that he just wanted to rob the train because he was hungry.
It doesn't take eight magazines to rob a train, Skarlatos said. The guy had a lot of ammo. His intentions seemed pretty clear.

Kayaking the Shuangxi River on the Northeast Coast
If relaxed paddling in a kayak on a calm river is your cup of tea, head to the beach-resort village of Fulong on the Northeast Coast to launch yourself on a short trip up and down the enchanting Shuangxi River!
Fulong is at the center of a recreational area known for its beautiful sand beach, the Longmen Camping Resort, and an old railway tunnel that is now part of a popular bike path. Among the water sport activities available for visitors are sailing, surfing, canoeing, and kayaking.
For those arriving by train or bus, a 15-minute walk from Fulong Railway Station will bring you to the Longmen Kayaking Base, which is on the grounds of the Longmen Camping Resort. There, Paddle Around International has been hosting kayaking tours for the past ten years. Kayak outings are offered that last two hours (NT$1,000/person) and six hours (NT$2,800), the latter including a lunch break at the base. A minimum of six persons is required for an excursion; but individuals and smaller groups can still make a booking, and will be joined with others who book separately. All reservations must be made at least three days in advance. Paddle Around can accommodate groups of up to 200 people; the outfit often organizes outings for schools and businesses.
Practicalities
• Reservations must be made three days in advance, at kayak.com.tw. The website is in Chinese, but English-speaking Paddle Around staff will reply to any English e-mails, and accompany foreign participants on trips.
• Sea kayaking courses are only offered May through September, and the Longmen Kayaking Base is closed January through March.
• Parking at Longmen Camping Resort is NT$50 per vehicle.
What to Bring
Expect to get wet. Avoid wearing any cotton clothing, and instead opt for water-friendly clothing that dries quickly. For both men and women, wearing board shorts, water shoes, and rash guards is recommended. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat during sunny weather! Bring a change of clothes and a towel; there are hot-shower facilities you can use after kayaking. There are also secure lockers in which you can store your belongings. Basic items like hats, sunscreen, and snacks are available at the base’s second-floor shop.
Getting There
Self Drive: Taiwan’s Northeast Coast stretches from the port city of Keelung all the way down to the northern part of Yilan County, its many bays and capes, enchanting rock formations, rugged cliffs, rolling green hills, and pristine beaches attracting visitors. The coastal highway (Provincial Highway 2) is a dramatically scenic route; a 40-minute drive will bring you from Keelung to Fulong. A faster but somewhat less scenic route is Provincial Highway 2C from the town of Nuannuan to Fulong, via Shifen and Shuangxi.
Public Transport: Getting to Fulong by train is very convenient. Just take an eastbound train from Taipei (60~90 min., NT$83~NT$128 depending on train type; note that most of the faster trains don’t stop at Fulong). Another option is taking a bus. From central Keelung take bus No. 791, which follows the coastal highway all the way to Fulong. From nearby Ruifang Railway Station, take a Taiwan Tourist Shuttle bus (Gold Fulong Shuttle Bus; No. 856) via the towns of Jiufen and Jinguashi. From outside Taipei Main Station (Exit M1) take Kuo Kuang Motor Co. bus No. 1811/1812. Finally, there is a small-bus service from Taipei’s MRT Nangang Station (Capital Bus No. 1577) to Fulong (leaving at 6am, 10am, and 3pm).

Truck crushes cars in horror Taiwan highway crash
Five people are lucky to be alive after a container truck overturned on a busy highway in Taiwan, crushing two cars and causing traffic chaos.
The smash occurred on State Highway 1 in Changhua on Taiwan's west coast yesterday, CNA reports.
It is unclear exactly how the high speed crash occurred but dashcam footage appears to show a silver vehicle cut in front of the truck, causing the rig to slam into it.
The truck then pushes the car across three lanes and into the concrete barrier dividing the highway, collecting a second vehicle.
The impact combined with the sharp swerve causes the truck to tip over and crush the cars underneath it.
Had the truck not come to rest on the barrier then the cars would have been crushed even more severely.
Five passengers in the two vehicles were conscious when they were pulled from the wreckage and taken to hospital.
The smash caused three lanes of the highway to be closed with traffic backed up for more than 5km.
Exploding sperm whale Carcass caught on camera in The Faroe Islands!
A camera captured the moment a sperm whale carcass, which washed up in the Faroe Islands, exploded. The clip, which was shown of Faroese Television, has since gone viral, racking up millions of hits on YouTube alone. The dead whale had been lying on the beach for two days, after getting stuck in the waters between two islands, when marine biologist Bjarni Mikkelsen was sent to cut it open. As he made incisions in the whale's side the carcass exploded due to a buildup of methane gas from the decomposition creating a loud sound and releasing a pungent smell. It is reported that a local museum will collect the skeleton and put it on display. Report by Laurie Blake.

Chinese coral fishing boat skipper arrested.
Japan's Coast Guard has arrested the skipper of a Chinese coral fishing boat navigating in Japan's exclusive economic zone on suspicion of refusing an onboard inspection.
A Coast Guard plane spotted the boat heading east about 80 kilometers southeast of the main island of Okinawa on Saturday morning.
