Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch, Switzerland (May 20th, 2016)
Jungfraujoch, also called 'The Top of Europe', is the saddle between Mönch and Jungfrau two 4000+ meter mountains in the Swiss Bernese Alps. The sphinx observatory platform is one of the highest observatories and weather research station. I took the famous cogwheel train from Grindelwald to Jungfraujoch Railway Station, the highest railway station in Europe. Along the way, we switched trains in Kleine Scheidegg and had two stops, one in Eigerwand and one in Eismeer. Although they are raiwlay stations, they are really more stops along the way for a lookout since they are in the middle (literally inside) of the mountain tunnels. The summit is self explanatory and had a nice exhibit as well as the ice tunnel and few stores. Afterwards, the train back down to Lauterbrunnen was taken.

Jungfraujoch and Aletsch glacier - Best video in 4 K
Jungfraujoch is a notable saddle in the Bernese Alps, connecting the two four-thousander peaks Jungfrau and Mönch, at an elevation of 3,466 metres (11,371 ft) above sea level. It is a glacier saddle, on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier, and part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch area, situated on the boundary between the cantons of Bern and Valais, halfway between Interlaken and Fiesch.
Since 1912, the Jungfraujoch has been accessible to tourists by the Jungfrau line, a railway from Interlaken and Kleine Scheidegg, running partly underground through a tunnel through the Eiger and Mönch. The Jungfraujoch railway station, at an elevation of 3,454 metres (11,332 ft) is the highest in Europe. It lies east of the saddle, below the Sphinx station, and is connected to the Top of Europe building, which includes several panoramic restaurants and a post office. Several tunnels lead outside, where secured hiking trails on the crevassed glacier can be followed, in particular to the Mönchsjoch Hut.
The Sphinx Observatory, one of the highest astronomical observatories in the world, provides an additional viewing platform at a height of 3,572 metres (11,719 ft). It can be reached by an elevator from the Jungfraujoch. The observatory houses one of the Global Atmosphere Watch's atmospheric research stations. The Jungfraujoch radio relay station, which is not accessible to the public, is installed west of the Jungfraujoch, on the Jungfrau ridge. It is Europe's highest radio relay station.
Jungfrau in Switzerland: Top of Europe (UNCUT)
The Jungfrau mountain in Switzerland is one of the most incredible places in the world at nearly 12,000 feet it offers the largest Aletsch glacier in the European Alps with a length of 22 KM, at the Sphinx Observatory you have a gorgeous few of the villages down below. Durng this special day there was also a NBA basketball court built on top of the Alps with Tony Parker as the star of the show.

Jungfrau Switzerland Travel Guide - The Top of Europe
A travel guide for riding the train to the Jungfrau in Switzerland and exploring the Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe. The Jungfrau is one of Switzerland's most visited attractions, and is also home to Europe's highest elevation train station. It's an amazing place where you can see glaciers and snow all year round. I begin by giving you an overview of the Jungfrau region itself, then we ride to the Jungfrau on the train from Lauterbrunnen via Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg. Then I explore the various attractions at the top of the Jungfrau at the Jungfraujoch including the Sphinx Platform, the Ice Palace, and the various outside snow play areas. We'll even take a look at how expensive a cup of instant noodle is up here!
The Jungfrau summit is one of the most famous peaks in the Swiss Alps. It has an elevation of about 4000 meters or 13,000 feet. It used to be fairly difficult to access well, until 1912 when Switzerland built the world's highest elevation cogwheel railway which takes you up to about 11,000 feet. And once you're at the top, there's a lot of neat stuff to do.
The Jungfrau is a pricey attraction. It can be a hundred, to a hundred and fifty Swiss franks depending upon where you're coming from. But I think it's really worth it. A lot of people, including Rick Steves say it's too manufactured for them, but let me tell you, I enjoy this manufactured platform that I can view the amazing view from. Otherwise I'd have to be like an ice climber and climb up this mountain. Which I never would.
If you're coming to Switzerland the Jungfrau is a must see for the natural beauty and splendor. It is truly amazing. Most trips to the the Jungfrau will start at Interlaken Ost. It's a station at the bottom of the valley. There's a few different ways to work your way up to the top ultimately to the Jungfraujoch or the saddle that's in between the two mountains. In this video I'll be going up the way by Wengen. You can also go up via Grindelwald. And you can also make it a circle trip. You can go up one way and then down the other.
The beginning of the journey up to the Jungfrau, you take the cogwheel train. It'll come up from Lauterbrunnen, and it stops in Wengen. And then it goes up to the station where you take the main train to actually go up to the Jungfrau. This train is kinda cool because it's a cogwheel train. You can actually see there's a track in the middle of it that has all these spikes on it that has the wheel so this train can be really steep. And I'll tell you, the train is really loud. And what's interesting is, the windows you can actually put your hand outside you get fresh air coming in which is really great on a day when it's probably not too hot.
There's a really popular travel quote that says, It's not the destination. It's the journey. And this is one of those trips that it really is the journey. I mean the destination's cool, but the views on the journey are epic. So enjoy the views on the train ride. Have your camera at the ready.
The different facilities at the Jungfrau are connected via these underground tunnels. You come in and it's the restaurant complex. The tunnel will take you out to a lot of the outdoor activities. One of the coolest places at the Jungfrau is at the high climate altitude research station. This is the Sphinx Terrace. It's an altitude of 11,782 feet. From up here you can see snow and what looks like to be a big glacier, in this direction. You can see down into the valley where there's no snow. You can see the snow tubing and the snow hiking paths. I will say why you're up here be careful not to drop anything small because it's open grating and that is a long way down.

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe
Icy air streams across your face, snow crunches under your feet, and the view nearly takes your breath away: on one side the view of the Mittelland up to the Vosges, on the other the Aletsch glacier, bordered by four thousand metre peaks. Standing on the Jungfraujoch 3,454 metres above sea level, you can feel it with your first step: this is a different world. It's one you have to experience.

I flew down to Zürich and took a train to get into the mountains with Grindelwald being my first stop. The location of Grindelwald is very unique providing one of the most stunning panoramas in Switzerland as it faces the mountains of Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. The ski area of Grindelwald-First offers some of the best views - especially from the breathtaking First Cliff Walk…but it is also a good spot to try the hearty Swiss cuisine before hitting the slopes again and finish it all off with some proper after ski drinks at the mountain huts or the Bus Stop bar.
From Grindelwald we took the Jungfraubahn train to the Jungfraujoch aka the „Top of Europe“ on 2571m where the highest railway station is located. The Jungfraujoch offers an outstanding view to the Aletsch glacier and the surrounding Alps from the viewing platform at the Sphinx observatory. But you can even go inside the glacier if you visit the ice palace underneath the building!
I finished this trip with a skiing day in the ski area of Hasliberg-Meiringen just a 2h picturesque train ride from Grindelwald.
As always feel free to leave more recommendations in the comment section below for future visitors of the Jungfrau Region as I only focussed on the highlights in this part of Switzerland.

Train to Jungfraujoch | Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region in the winter - By cogwheel train from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch - the highest railway station of Europe at 11,782ft, also called Top of Europe | Swiss Mountain Experience. Along the way this train from Jungfrau Railways stops at the stations Eigergletscher and Eismeer. After departing the station of Eigergletscher the train is entering a tunnel with a length of 4.3 Miles (7 kilometre). This tunnel leads you through the mountains Eiger and Mönch to Jungfraujoch. At this top there is the Jungfrauplateau and also the “Sphinx observatory”. This astronomical observatory is one of the highest observatorys in the world. At Jungfraujoch there is a stunning breathtaking far-sightedness over the Swiss Alps and the Aletsch Glacier. The Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn Region is part of the Unesco World Heritage Site. To build the Jungfrau Railways, from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch, took about 16 years and it was initiated by Adolf Guyer-Zeller. The first trains from JB started in August 1912. From Kleine Scheidegg there is a train connection from Wengernalp Railway to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Nice to know is that the Wengernalpbahn is world’s longest rackwheel / cogwheel railway with a total length of 19.11 kilometres (11.87 miles). From Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald there is a direct train connection to Interlaken-Ost via Zweilütschienen and Wilderswil.

The Magnificent Top of Europe Jungfraujoch, Switzerland
A sensational train journey operates 365 days a year to the highest railway station in Europe, at 3,454 meters/11,332 feet where a large complex was constructed on top of the mountain.
I'm still in sticker shock over the cost to take the Jungfrau Cog Railway up to the Jungfraujoch complex - 163 CHF (Swiss Francs) per person but so worth it that people come fro all over the world just to take this excursion. We were fortunate enough to schedule our trip to the Top of Europe on a sunny, crystal clear, blue sky day with not one puffy cloud in the sky.
Dress warm, go early and spend the day!

We are at the very top of Europe - Jungfraujoch..
For as far as you can see from the Sphinx Observatory, you see snow clad mountains..
Jungfraujoch Top of Europe
The Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe is the high point of any Swiss holiday. The highest railway station in Europe is located 3,454 meters above sea level. The visitors gain access to a high-Alpine wonderland of ice, snow and rock, which they can admire from the viewing platforms on the Aletsch Glacier or in the Ice Palace .
The Jungfrau (German: maiden/virgin) is one of the main summits in the Bernese Alps, situated between the cantons of Valais and Bern in Switzerland. Together with the Eiger and Mönch, the Jungfrau forms a massive wall overlooking the Bernese Oberland and is considered one of the most emblematic sights of the Swiss Alps.

Ice Palace, Jungfraujoch in Switzerland
A large complex of tunnels and buildings has been constructed at the Jungfraujoch, mostly into the south side of the Mönch. There is a hotel, two restaurants, an observatory, a research station, a small cinema, a ski school, and the Ice Palace, a collection of elaborate ice sculptures. Another tunnel leads outside to a flat, snow-covered area, where one can walk around and look down to the Konkordiaplatz and the Aletsch Glacier, as well as the surrounding mountains.

Jungfraujoch Switzerland (Top of Europe) 360 from train conductors cabin
We had the pleasure of riding in the conductors cabin while leaving Jungfraujoch Switzerland. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to capture a 360 video. It’s several minutes long but is fun to see as we go in and out of the tunnels.
