Australians eat three times more junk food than Any other
For More Latest News Subscribe us:
Australians eat three times more junk food than the recommended daily intake, according to a new report.
Australians were consuming junk food every day rather than as an indulgence, said the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) report.
The study of 40,000 Australians found, on average, people consumed the equivalent of 32kg of chocolate a year.
Australia scored 61 out of 100 in the CSIRO's Healthy Diet Score Survey.
The scores were fairly unflattering across all respondents, said CSIRO research director Prof Manny Noakes.
If we were handing out report cards for diet quality Australia would only get a C, said Prof Noakes.
Prof Noakes defined junk food as those foods that should be an occasional treat, such as chocolate, cake and fast food.
'Eat more slowly'
Obesity rates are continuing to rise in Australia.
Almost two in three Australian adults and one in four children are overweight or obese, according to the government's Institute of Health and Welfare.
Australians needed to eat less junk food and eat smaller portions of food, said Prof Noakes.
[Junk] food is no longer just an indulgence - it's become mainstream and Australians are eating it each and every day, she said.
They also need to be more mindful of every bite they take by eating more slowly and consciously.
The survey evaluated a person's diet based on variety, frequency and quantity of the essential food groups as well as individual attributes such as age and gender.

You might be expecting them all to be extravagant, but there are a lot of very simple things that this famous chef enjoys. I've been in St Kilda, Melbourne this week and figured I might try some of the local delicacies (a.k.a Australian junk food from the supermarket). Turns out the food wasn't overly weird just foreign.

Welcome to Eat Up - 2017
Eat Up is an Australian not-for-profit that helps feed hungry disadvantaged school kids.
PLEASE SHARE OUR VIDEO
To Eat Up Volunteers, Family, Friends, Corporate Partners, Schools and Donors,
We want to say a very big thank you. We could not have fed as many hungry kids as we have without your ongoing support and generosity.
This video was put together by Visual Domain ( this is the second video that they have produced for Eat Up Australia. Their generosity is amazing. Great work again Visual Domain this video shares our story and cause so well!
This year in February 2017 I came on board Full Time after running Eat Up on a shoestring for just under 4 years. I worked a few part-time jobs and reinvested what I could into Eat Up (mostly on ingredients and fuel). It was a hard slog but the support we have received has been massive and knowing that the lunches are helping was all the drive I need.
We have nearly tripled the number of schools we look after since the start of the year. We now service 160 schools across Metro & Regional Victoria. We are having a crack at improving the statistics of kids who go to school without a meal - it is 1 in 8 and hopefully 1 in 10, 1 in 12, etc. This is not a sprint and will take time.
To feed this many schools, we are delivering over 3,000 sandwiches every week. Hungry kids are provided with a lunch that includes a cheese or VEGEMITE sandwich, a fruit cup (donated by PSC) and a muesli bar (donated by Joy foods). To make this many sandwiches, it is an enormous team effort from so many people. The sandwiches are made in our Public Volunteer Sessions, Corporate Sessions, School Sessions and Community Groups - it is truly collaborative in the best way. We have made in excess of 150,000 sandwiches so far!
The outcomes being achieved are amazing - when kids have food in their stomach, their concentration in class is improved, there are improved learning outcomes, kids don't feel socially isolated within the playground, and teachers have reduced stress because they have happier and more engaged kids in their classroom. These outcomes are what motivate us and we are very proud to be able to help!
Internally we purchased our first Van 'Norma' last year but due to growth this year we are currently fundraising for a second Van to keep up with the demand - encouragingly, we're nearly there. As important as 'Norma' has been, she is the third most important member of our team - Elise Cook and Lindy Susskind - have made so much of what Eat Up does possible. Without them, we simply would not be able to provide for the number of schools and hungry children that we do. There is no job description that could define what these two contribute on a daily basis because they do it all! I am very lucky to have such smart, committed and passionate people to work alongside. I am extremely grateful for their ongoing support. To everyone else behind the scenes, both in Metro and Regional areas, you are not forgotten - the hours you put in are just as valuable. Deb in Ballarat, Shades in Shepparton, Carli in Geelong, and so many more, Eat Up is the ultimate team effort!
On a social media/brand awareness front, we have been learning and trying cross both Facebook and Instagram to keep everyone updated and share in the positive change of Eat Up Australia. We are just short of 2,000 likes on Facebook (we will hit that very shortly) and 1,000 followers on Instagram. Expect the posts across both platforms to continue and we encourage everyone who is involved in an Eat Up event to post and share with your friends and network. We see your posts and we try our best to recognise all of them and also share posts were possible.
Where to next, well the journey is young and still in the beginning. There are still many more schools to support in Victoria alone. Our aim is to be helping 200 schools by the end of the year. That is a lot of sandwiches on a weekly, fortnightly, monthly basis. As soon as it is practically possible, our aim is to go bigger and go interstate. Unfortunately, hungry kids are located right across Australia, so we have made it our mission to be too.
Please continue to follow our story and get behind us. Ways people can help out are as follows:
