Charmouth Jurassic Coast | Fossil Hunting | Dorset, United Kingdom
Our camping holiday was not complete without fossil hunting at Charmouth Jurassic Coast in Dorset, United Kingdom. It is one of the safest place for fossil hunting.
Children did enjoy swimming in the cold sea and fossil hunting. It was a wonderful experience.
And if happens you can't find any fossils on the beach. You can purchase one at Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre.

Britains Jurassic Coast Documentary
Walking Through Time Episode 3 Jurassic Coast
The Jurassic Coast needs no introduction, really. But I think you’d be hard pressed to find a more stunning shot of the Lulworth Crumple. I go from Kimmeridge Bay to Budleigh Salterton, investigating anoxia from local to global scales with Paul Wignall. I get to meet palaeontologist Simon Penn, who is rapidly becoming the heir to Steve Etches, and his gorgeous fossils. I have a cuppa with Kevan Sheehan, who discovered an incredibly complete giant Pliosaur skull at Osmington Mills (and had it named in honour of all the Kev’s in the world). Hillary Ketchum is my expert guide to that pliosaur. And Eliza Howlett and I have the most trowelblazer-tastic time talking Mary Anning and Eliza Philpott in Lyme Regis. And we have a bit of a Landmark Trust love in. Oh, and underwater robot vehicle REX returns, ably assisted by Adrian Glover and Leigh Marsh.

Jurassic Coast Dorset Fossil Finds
In tribute to Mary Anning (from 200 years in her future) I present these images of fossils from my pilgrimage to the Dorset Coast of England. The Royal Society and the Lyme Regis Museum are presently celebrating the accomplishments of Mary Anning -- and so am I. She sure found some amazing things before any established academics did -- though they weren't shy about taking credit apparently.
I collected these fossils (and took pictures of ones too big to collect) in February of 2007 on the beaches at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, and below Golden Cap.
Many of the ammonites were preserved in pyrite or marcasite, and many had yellow/green calcite in the chambers -- very beautiful. So far -- after almost 4 years -- all but one of the ammonites have remained shiney and free of corosion.
Coming from the States as a tourist, I wondered how commercial collectors would be if I met any on the beaches. I met three commercial guys and they were all very nice and helpful. I think they knew I wasn't really after the same large specimens and slabs they were looking for. I also had the pleasure of a chance meeting with Mr. Martin Foster and his friend on the beach below Golden Cap. They sure had some great collecting stories to share as we waited for the tide. I also met a very helpful gentleman named Bernie on the beach near Seatown.
Anyway, it was a great trip and I found a lot more than I expected. The cliffs are extensive and erosive and full of fossils to replentish the beach. I hope I can go back again...
My sci-fi comedy novel Used Aliens contains ammonites!
Chapman's Pool in Jurassic World Heritage Coastline Dorset (1080p)
Chapman's Pool is a beautifully tucked away cove in Dorset, west of Worth Matravers on the Isle of Pubeck. It is a magnificent cove with very little visitors, partly because very few know about it and even less actually want to make the descend to get to it.

Chelsea trying to find Fossils on Charmouth Beach, September 2015
This short video shows my girlfriend at the time Chelsea trying (but unsuccessfully!) trying to break rocks to find fossils on Charmouth Beach in Dorset whilst we were on holiday for the week with my family. We visited this beach around 3 times that week, with the area being renowned for fossils being found on the beaches around this coastline.
