Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset, England, situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast. The town of Weymouth is 11 kilometres (7 mi) south of Dorchester and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the Isle of Portland. The town's population is 52,323 (2011). The town is the third largest settlement in Dorset after the unitary authorities of Bournemouth and Poole.
Weymouth is a tourist resort, and its economy depends on its harbour and visitor attractions; the town is a gateway situated halfway along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Weymouth Harbour has included cross-channel ferries, and is home to pleasure boats and private yachts, and nearby Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held.
The A354 road bridge connects Weymouth to Portland, which together form the borough of Weymouth and Portland. The history of the borough stretches back to the 12th century; including involvement in the spread of the Black Death, the settlement of the Americas, the development of Georgian architecture, and preparations for World War II.

Dismantling Weymouth's Jurassic Skyline (Sea Life) Tower, December 2019. Opened 2012. 12 mins
Weymouth's Sea Life Tower, later called Jurassic Skyline, was a £multi-million attraction constructed by Merlin Entertainments, in a prominent position on the pier, commanding spectacular views over Weymouth Bay, the Harbour, beach and Esplanade. It was erected ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, for which Weymouth and Portland hosted the hugely successful Olympic Sailing events. This film includes a ride (flight) to the top in 2012, then the demolition of the tower (another £multi-million operation) in 2019 with one of the biggest cranes in the country.. Some people regarded it as an intrusive eyesore, but it was enjoyed by nearly 3/4 million trippers, and it had good/excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Dismantled, it was transported to new owners in the Middle East via Felixstowe port

02/08/19 Closure announced on facebook:
*ANNOUNCEMENT* Jurassic Skyline opened in 2012 as a temporary attraction offering unique views of Weymouth, Portland and the Jurassic Coast. Since then the attraction has welcomed almost 750,000 visitors. However, over recent years visitor volume has declined and having thoroughly reviewed all the options on the financial viability of the Jurassic Skyline, we have reached the difficult decision not to extend the life span of this attraction.
As a result Jurassic Skyline is now permanently closed. This was an enormously tough decision which has been reached with a heavy heart and with the utmost consideration. We will be working closely with Dorset Council to manage the removal of Jurassic Skyline and reinstatement of the land at the Peninsula in the coming months.
We’d like to say a huge thank you to all our staff who have shown amazing commitment and teamwork over the years. We also want to thank all our wonderful guests for their support.
