Freediving Barracuda Lake, Coron, Philippines. Barracuda Lake has a sharp thermocline at around 15m where the water becomes incredibly hot. Combined with the natural limestone cliffs surrounding the lake, it is a remarkable place to freedive.

FREEDIVING | Beginner Course in Barracuda Lake, Coron
I grew up in the Philippines going to the beach every weekend. I pretty much learned how to swim in the ocean. My parents were scuba divers and I'd always be stuck at the surface with my snorkel. I'd constantly dive down to try to reach them and that is how I began to naturally become a freediver. I never knew any freedivers and wanted to meet people who shared the same interest, so I booked my beginner course in Coron because Barracuda lake is one of my favorite places on Earth. If I was going to be properly trained, it would be there.
The first day, we did not get to record because we focused on learning. We sat in the classroom and learned yoga breathing techniques, proper freediving posture, and rescue. I made it to 15 meters (50ft.) on the first day, where you meet the thermocline. This lake has a different thermocline than most bodies of water because it is fresh water mixed with a little of salt water. As you reach 15m, it gets drastically warm, as if you are entering a jacuzzi. It was a very unique experience. I was also greeted by a very large Barracuda as I was doing a dive.
The second day, we were able to record and enjoy at the end. I was able to reach 20 meters (65ft.). I also got to go through this small tunnel at 15m, which was a thrilling experience for me.
I cannot wait to return for my advanced course in the future!

Freediving Lusong Gunboat | Coron Philippines | GoPro
Freediving Lusong Gunboat, near Coron Island in the Philippines. The video was shot with the GoPro Hero 5 and GoPro Hero 4 Silver. The Lusong Gunboat is around an hours boat ride from Coron Town, and is offered as part of a day tour with many excursions.
The Gunboat was originally used as a submarine hunter by the Japanese in WW2, before it was bombed and sunk by the AmericansThe wreck has a maximum depth of around 12m at the bow, and is shallow enough for snorkelers to enjoy too. It is possible to swim through the bow and main hold of the wreck. The wreck is encrusted with fabulous corals and there are good coral gardens around the wreck.

FREEDIVING | East Tangat Gunboat Wreck in Coron, Philippines
Instagram -
#JuliaFreedive
Average depth: 3 meters
Maximum depth: 22 meters
This was my first time to dive at the East Tangat wreck in Coron. What made it interesting was the visibility was extremely low and I didn’t know where I was diving to. Only once you get close to the ship does it appear. Visibility during this time of the year isn’t great (November). I enter a small opening which is pitch black at first but as you enter, the room fills with light. I was able to also go through two separate rooms during the dive. The experience was thrilling and I’m definitely a wreck diving adrenaline junkie now! I cannot wait to return during a time with better visibility and explore more rooms in the ship.
East Tangat wreck sunk on the 24th of September, 1944, during World War II. It was believed to either be a tugboat or anti-submarine craft.
