Taiwan’s longest Matsu pilgrimage sets off from Lecheng Temple in Taichung
Disciples of the goddess Matsu have set off on Taichung''s famous Eighteen-Village Pilgrimage. As the name indicates, the annual parade will pass through 18 villages over the course of 22 days. In terms of distance and duration, this is the longest pilgrimage in Taiwan. Today former Taichung mayor Lin Chia-lung stopped by the central city to wish the devotees a safe and blessed journey. Each year a Matsu pilgrimage begins from on Taichung''s Lecheng Temple on the first day of the third lunar month. Today the square of the temple was filled with devoted followers.This 22-day pilgrimage will take Matsu on a tour of some 99 temples around the country. It''s Taiwan''s longest pilgrimage, in terms of its duration and distance covered.Lin Chia-lungTransportation ministerOn this blessed day, may Matsu protect and keep you all in good health. May she bring prosperity in all your endeavors, and may she bring you riches. Lecheng Temple''s Matsu pilgrimage has been recognized by the Ministry of the Interior as one of Taiwan''s Top 100 Religious Scenes. It''s the longest pilgrimage in terms of duration, and it has the longest history. The pilgrimage has lasted 22 days every year for 198 years. So it really can be said to be the longest running pilgrimage.Over 22 days, Matsu''s palanquin will travel to 18 villages. It will be joined by a parade of followers celebrating Matsu and praying for her blessings in the year ahead.
