Calcutta Welcomes The Queen - 1961
Calcutta is a city of millions, and, long before the royal visit, masses of people were giving the police a busy time, as they crowded the streets. Meanwhile, a trip aboard a river-steamer was Her Majesty's last engagement in East Pakistan. The Queen and Prince Philip had driven out from Dacca to the Adamjee jute mills, and were returning this way. The great Steelworks at Durgapur was first on the list of engagements for the return to India. When Her Majesty came to be shown over the plant, she saw one of Britain's largest overseas contracts. It's not yet completed, but it's already in operation. British technical supervision, together with India technicians and workers co-operated in building it. From Durgapur to Calcutta, and a multitudinous welcome from the people of the city. The Queen was accompanied by Miss Naidu (Governor of West Bengal) on this memorable drive.

Verdant Works was a busy jute mill which now as a museum transports visitors back over 100 years to when jute was king and Dundee was its realm. This film presents a historic review of the importance jute played in the economy of Dundee and Scotland during 19th century. Fascinatingly, the film shows machinery similar to that at the Dundee industrial museum operating in Kolkata today.

Kumortuli (also spelt Kumartuli, or the archaic spelling Coomartolly) (Bengali: কুমোরটুলি) is a traditionally potters’ quarter in northern Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta), the capital of the east Indian state of West Bengal. By virtue of their artistic productions these potters have moved from obscurity to prominence. This Kolkata neighbourhood, not only supplies clay idols of Hindu gods and goddesses to barowari pujas in Kolkata and its neighbourhoods, but a number of idols are exported. It is one of the seven wonders in Kolkata.
Kumortuli images are generally ordered well in advance and there a few for off-the-shelf sale. Nowadays, Kumortuli’s clientele has extended to America, Europe and Africa, among the Indian communities living there. In 1989, Durga images made out of shola pith by Amarnath Ghosh were flown to Sweden, Australia, Malaysia and Nigeria. The images weighed only three kilograms each and were ideally suited for air travel. In modern times, Statues and replicas made out of Fiberglass are also being produced and exported to various parts of the country and the world.
In 2006, Kumortuli supplied 12,300 clay deities of goddess Durga. This potter's town supplies images to about 90 countries worldwide with new nations joining the list every year. Many East European countries, where religious ceremonies were previously banned, have started buying images from Kumortuli. A spokesman of Kumartuli Shilpi Sangha (KSS), an association of the craftsmen, said the NRIs of countries like Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia, Austria and Poland, come to Kumortuli to buy images. U.S. based NRIs, including the Bengali Association of Southern California, Bengali Association of Greater Chicago, Dakshini, Sanskriti, Garden State Puja Committee of New Jersey, East Coast Durga Puja Committee of New York, North America Sarbojanin Kalipuja Association of Connecticut come to Kumartuli to select deities to ship to their cities. Additionally, hundreds of agents in Kolkata service NRIs seeking idols from Kumortuli

Writers' building, National Library and Town Hall in Kolkata
One can see the Writers' building, National Library and Town Hall in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The Writers' Building, often shortened to just Writers ', is the secretariat building of the State Government of West Bengal in India. It is located in West Bengal's capital city of Kolkata. It housed the office of the Chief Minister of West Bengal till 4 October 2013. Now most of the departments has moved out to another building named Nabanna in Howrah on a temporary basis for facilitating renovation of the Writers'.
The Writers' Building originally served as the office for writers of the British East India Company, hence the name. Designed by Thomas Lyon in 1777, the Writers' Building has gone through several extensions over the years.
In 1821 a 128 ft-long verandah with Ionic style columns, each 32 ft high, were added on the first and second floors. From 1889 - 1906 two new blocks were added, approached by iron staircases that are still in use. Writers’ acquired its Greco-Roman look, complete with the portico in the central bay and the red surface of exposed brick. The parapet was put in place and the statues sculpted by William Fredric Woodington in 1883, that line the terrace, were installed.
The giant pediment at the centre is crowned with the statue of Minerva. The terrace also contains several other statues and notable among them are four clusters of statues, christened 'Justice', 'Commerce', 'Science' and 'Agriculture', with the Greek Gods and Goddesses of these four streams (Zeus, Hermes, Athena and Demeter respectively) flanked by a European and an Indian practitioner of these vocations, adorn the building.
The 150 meter long Writers' Building covers the entire northern stretch of the a water body locally called Lal Dighi in B.B.D. Bagh area. Various departments of the West Bengal government are housed in this building. It is an edifice of great political significance and memories of the Indian Independence Movement.
The National Library of India on the Belvedere Estate in Alipore, Kolkata, is the largest library in India by volume and India's library of public record. It is under the Department of Culture, Ministry of Tourism & Culture, Government of India. The library is designated to collect, disseminate and preserve printed material produced in India. The library is situated on the scenic 30-acre (12 ha) Belvedere Estate. It is the largest in India with a collection in excess of 2.2 million books. Before independence, it was the official residence of Lt. Governor of Bengal.
Kolkata Town Hall in Roman Doric style, was built in 1813 by the architect and engineer Maj.-Gen. John Garstin (1756-1820) with a fund of 700,000 Rupees raised from a lottery to provide the Europeans with a place for social gatherings.
In1999, Corporation purchased the entire collection of rare books and journals on Kolkata from the noted Kolkata expert P. T. Nair to form a reference library. In 2004, the library was formally opened by the then Minister of Library Services, Nimai Mal in a small function presided over by the then Mayor Subrata Mukherjee. In 2007, the entire reference library of the Corporation has been amalgamated with the Town Hall Library. Now the library possesses about 12,000 books and journals and is visited by many scholars from different corners of India and abroad.

INDIA: CALCUTTA: FOUR KILLED IN CLASHES BETWEEN MUSLIMS AND HINDUS
Natural Sound
At least four people have died in three days of rioting in the Indian city of Calcutta.
The fighting - the worst in Calcutta for 3 years - started on Wednesday when Muslims defied the authorities by marching through a mainly Hindu area of the city.
Since then, there's been sporadic violence between Muslims and Hindus - with the security forces attempting to maintain order.
Angry rioters took to the streets of Calcutta in the worst fighting Calcutta has seen in three years.
Riot police moved into the scene and were attacked by stones and homemade fire bombs.
The death toll now stands at four after three days of the Hindu-Muslim violence.
The fighting erupted on Wednesday when a Muslim procession marched through a predominantly Hindu neighbourhood to celebrate a Shiite festival.
Soldiers from the Indian army have been ordered to march thought the riot hit areas as a show of strength.
Muslims make up 15 per cent of Calcutta's population.
The last Hindu-Muslim violence in Calcutta was in 1992.
That time it was sparked by the destruction of a Mosque in northern India.
