Daimyo Nagai Naomasa's Kōshō-ji Temple in Uji!
Reestablished in 1648, Kōshō-ji Temple, with its white Chinese-style gate, reflects the solemn atmosphere of the Zen sect. The slope between the riverside and the temple is called Kotozaka, one of the 12 Beauty Spots of Uji. Here you can enjoy the tinted autumnal leaves.
In 1233, after his return from his study mission to China, Dōgen Zenji founded the Kōshō-ji Temple, the first Sōtō temple in Fushimi Fukakusa, just south of the ancient capital Kyoto. During medieval warring, fire destroyed the compound and many priceless scriptures. In 1648, the daimyo of Yodo, Nagai Naomasa rebuilt it at Uji, its present location. The main worship hall is traditionally said to have been made from parts of Fushimi castle.
After Dōgen Zenji's death, the Kōshō-ji Temple ceased to exist. But the abbot Banan Eishu revived it to serve as a centre for the severe and simple style of Zen inherited from Dōgen Zenji. During the Edo period (1603-1867), novices from all over Japan came to train at the Koshoji, which, together with the Eiheiji and the Sojiji, cultivated many outstanding monks.
As well as a place of great scenic beauty, Uji, where the Kōshō-ji Temple is located, is famous for its green tea. Immediately inside the temple gate, a slope-called Kotozaka, because of its resemblance to the Japanese koto harp-leads gently upward through murmuring streams. Rich stands of favourite Japanese pine, peach, plum, willow, cherry, and maple-enhance the loveliness of the grounds.
Dōgen Zenji was a Japanese Zen Buddhist teacher born in Kyōto. He founded the Sōtō school of Zen in Japan after travelling to China and training under Rujing, a master of the Chinese Caodong lineage.
Nagai Naomasa was a Japanese daimyo of the Edo period, who ruled the Uruido, Koga and Yodo Domains. The eldest son of Nagai Naokatsu, he fought at the Battle of Sekigahara and the Siege of Osaka.
Gyoban is a wooden fish-shaped drum, which serves as a signal to start and end rituals, meditation sessions and meals. The fish-shaped drums are common in Zen temples in Japan. Gyoban is also called Gyoko, Mokugyoku, or Ho. In Buddhism, the fish, which never sleeps, symbolises wakefulness and devotion to training.

Kosho-ji Temple (Kōshōji) was originally built in 1233 and at a different location in Kyoto. It wasn’t until 1648 that it was moved to its current location in Uji, by Nagai Noamasa. Belonging to the Soto Zen branch of Japanese Buddhism, Kosho-ji is famous for its Heian-period statue of Kannon. The other well-known attraction is its gorgeous maple approach, known as Kotozaka, that turns into a magnificent mix or red and yellow leaves in autumn.

Kōshō-ji Temple (興聖寺) Along the Ujigawa River in Uji City, Kyoto.
This is the slope leading to the Kōshō-ji Temple (興聖寺) during the autumn season of 2013. The colourful maple leaves turn this entrance path into a romantic favourite. The temple is also worthwhile visiting if you are in the vicinity.
This is raw footage with no editing, just to give you an idea what it looks like during the momiji season.

Koshoji Temple
Hey everyone, enjoy my first vlog from Japan, a short tour of the temple I visited a few weeks ago.
Koshoji is a Buddhist temple located in the center of Nagoya. This location is popular for weddings and I actually accidentally crashed a wedding reception. No one noticed, but it was still embarrassing.
Japan is interesting in that they regard religious traditions as art of the culture rather than part of a particular belief or faith. Because of this most people blend both religions into their lives. It is common to have a Shinto or Christian wedding and a Buddhist funeral.

Kosho-ji Zen Temple The Garden of Kyoto [4K]
Kosho-ji is a Zen Buddhist Soto sect temple and the first temple of the sect. The temple was established in the 13th century, but abolished afterward. It was reconstructed at this place in the 17th century.
The approach to the temple is called Kotozaka slope and is one of the 12 Beauty Spots of Uji. Some say the name comes from the shape of the slope and others say it comes from the sound of two streams along the slope. Actually, the shape of the slope is shaped just like a Japanese harp, Koto, and the sound of streams sounds like a music of Koto. The place is also famous for red maple leaves in autumn.
At the top end of the slope,

In 1052, Byodoin Temple was built by the Regent, Fujiwara no Yorimichi by rebuilding the villa, given by his father, Michinaga. The year 1052 was said to be the beginning of a decadent age when Buddhism was thought to be dying out and pessimism due to decadence infected the minds of aristocrats and monks. Jodoshinko (belief in Jodo), which prays for peaceful death and rebirth in Gokuraku (nirvana), widely spread throughout society. In 1053, the following year, Amidado (Hoo-do (Phoenix Hall)) was completed and in the Hall, the Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Tathagata) Seated Statue at a height of 2.43m, created by Jocho, the greatest sculptor during the Heian Period, was situated and it is said that it was the most extravagant of the time. The building and statutes created about 1,000 years ago have been passed down to this day and are registered as a World Heritage Site.
