Secret of K2 Museum Skardu

The project “Wanderlust Pakistan” was conceived, organised and implementated by the Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus (German Cultural Centre Lahore) (ASH) in collaboration with the University of Lahore’s School of Creative Arts (SoCA). It is the first part of a series of events under the headline “Wanderlust Pakistan” which aims at highlighting the cultural and ethnic diversity of Pakistan.

The Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus, the German cultural centre in Lahore, is a cultural institute which was established in 2003 for the purpose of promoting the bilateral dialogue between Pakistan and Germany through an extensive German language programme as well as through cultural events which it organises on a regular basis in the fields of literature, theatre , music , fine arts and film. The Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus is a partner of the Goethe-Institut Pakistan and is housed together with the French cultural centre, the Alliance Francaise de Lahore.

PTDC motel skardu is nice place to stay. You can see Indus River , Cold desert and snow capped mountains from here. There is a museum k2 Italian Museum too.

Pakistan, In Search of K2 Views, Karakoram Episode 1

This is a 4 day solo trek into Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains to find the Machilu La Pass from which spectacular photos of K2 are possible. The million refuges heading south from the Swat Valley didn't deter me from the objective however the monsoons eventually won out.

Trek to K2 Views, Pakistan Video Content

I then spent a week transiting lower Pakistan to Baltistan in the far northeast to reach Skardu. While in Skardu I visited the K2 museum. And while there I noticed a photograph and it inspired me. It was a panoramic view of K2 and the surrounding mountains. I was determined to find that view and take my own photos of K2. I was told it would take 2 - 4 days to walk to the photographing location; Machulu La.

I set out the next day.

I made my way to the small village of Machalu by public transport. And then began the trek. I followed the river upstream. Near it’s source I cut to a tributary where I found a small rock shelter, high up in the cliffs that provided protection from the elements.

Early next day I set out early the next day in spite of the rain. I trekked to the ridge line where I found a small stone village and two little boys who led me to an old man. The old man made me tea and shared the day with me.

After another cold night I awoke to more rain so waited it out in the shelter. On the 3rd day there was still no sunshine (and the clouds were dominant). Rather than wait another day, I started trekking through valley to find the pass. After many hours I got guidance from a local shepherd.

Around 2pm I finally reached the pass. From the pass I expected to see Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II, Gasherbrum I, K6, K7, Nanga Parbat but none where visible. It didn’t take me 1 hour, it didn’t take me 2 hours, it took me 3 hours to get there. At the pass I met a shepherd who was searching for his cows. We sat and watched the clouds, the mountains, the valley, the river far below and then the snowflakes began to fall.

Quickly I packed my gear and followed him back to his village. By evening I was back at my stone shelter for another cold night.

On the morning of the 4th day the monsoons had arrived. The clouds were permanent. As the shepherd had pointed out, I was too late. The season was over. I packed up my gear and made my way back to Skardu.

So for 4 days I searched for a view of K2, and that one can never guarantee in the mountains.

During my road trip through #Pakistan I lost my wallet in a small place in SWAT and I will never forget how two locals were chasing us with their car. First I thought they want to hurt us haha but then they jumped out and gave me my wallet! I didn't even realize that I lost it. That's just one of the many many kind gestures I encountered while traveling through Pakistan.

During this trip we decided to NOT cross the lawari tunnel but instead to drive the unused old mountain route on top of lawari. We were the only car taking this route and even though it's not used anymore, it was still in a pretty good condition. Thanks to @marwatsanaullah and @being_niazali for organizing the trip and hanging out with us and of course @veri_worldwide for being a great camera girl haha I can see a bright future for you! :D
