Russian KGB and Genocide in Vilnius Lithuania E002
I visit the KGB & Genocide Museum and other sites around Vilnius. I shot most of this video before making the decision not do continue with travel videos. which I explain in this video. Starting with the next video, the focus will be more about my lifestyle and experiences as I travel rather than rattling off historical tourist information.

LITHUANIA: MASS GRAVE OF KGB VICTIMS DISCOVERED
Lithuanian/Nat
A mass grave believed to contain the remains of hundreds of people murdered in KGB purges has been discovered in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.
The revelation coincides with commemorations of the 55th anniversary of Stalin's deportations, awakening new resentment amongst Lithuanians towards the Soviet occupation.
More than 20,000 people were killed between 1945 and 1953 but only a fraction of their remains have been found.
Lithuanian soldiers drafted in to do the macabre spadework have so far found the remains of ten people.
But researchers who have examined KGB archives have been convinced for some time that the security services disposed of some 1200 of their victims in Tvskulenai Park in Vilnius.
These bones and skulls are the first concrete proof that people who 'disappeared' half a century ago were killed.
Archaeologists from Vilnius University are overseeing the excavation of several pits expected to reveal hundreds more bodies.
The skeletons are still clothed and nearly every skull shows one or more bullet holes to the back of the head.
Vytautas Skuodis who's in charge of the operation wants to know more about the victims as well as those who carried out the killings.
He's already compiled data on 140 people who were shot but believes there are another 800 names to come. He is shocked by the scale of the murders.
SOUNDBITE: Lithuanian
It's hard to believe that people were killed in the KGB building as well as buried in the centre of Vilnius. People just vanished.
SUPER CAPTION: Vytautas Skuodis, Vilnius University
A mass grave containing 593 people was discovered a 100 metres away from this site last summer but further excavations had to be suspended until the weather improved this year.
KGB files indicate that more bodies are concealed in a further 40 locations around Vilnius, although the graves are thought not to be on the scale of that uncovered in Tvskulenai Park.
Relatives of the dead are now calling for a new cemetery to be established where victims can be given a more dignified burial.

Museum of Genocide Victims, Vilnius, Lithuania
Just a warning: This video is about a museum dedicated to genocide victims. The subject matter is unsettling and there is mention of and some footage of an execution chamber, a former Gestapo/KGB prison (cells, hallways, etc. that are historically accurate) and may be disturbing.
Went to this incredibly well run museum in Vilnius, Lithuania on my trip to the city at the end of March. One of the most intense experiences of my life to date. I've been studying genocide (the Holocaust in particular) for a long time, but had never been to a site of some of the atrocities before. This isn't to the level of visiting a concentration camp, but it's really not too far off. Please take this into consideration and don't watch if it will bother you, it's a very dark and unsettling topic and I only hope I did it some justice.
Genocido aukų muziejus
Pačiame Vilniaus centre, KGB rūmuose, genocido aukoms atminti įrengtas muziejus, atskleidžiantis daugiau kaip pusę amžiaus trukusius sovietų ir nacių vykdytus nusikaltimus žmonijai. Muziejus apnuogina tragiškus ir žiaurius politinių kalinių gyvenimo momentus, todėl apsilankymas jame -- sukrečiantis.
Vilnius The Museum of Genocide Victims
The KGB prison 2014.05.02
The most important part of the exhibition put on by the museum is the old NKVD/MGB/KGB prison that was established in the basement of the building in the autumn of 1940 after Lithuania's occupation by the Soviet Union. At that time, the prison contained 50 cells. Only at the beginning of the 1960s, when the anti-Soviet resistance was broken, were most of the cells used to house the KGB archives. The remaining 23 cells (later on, 19) were still used for the imprisonment of dissidents and fighters for human rights.
