Many of Astrup's paintings are also here. A visit to Bergen was part of MV Marco Polo's Norway and Land of the Northern Lights cruise itinerary. 81 Wooden Balls by Ai Weiwei at KODE Art Museums of Bergen
On October 4th 2012, Ai Weiwei's new installation 81 Wooden Balls world premiered at KODE Art Museums of Bergen, as part of the group exhibition Real Life Stories. The installation fills the entire Tower Room at Lysverket and consists of 81 large wooden balls which are placed in a 9 by 9 meter square. The total number of balls coincides with the number of days Ai Weiwei was imprisoned in 2011.
The artist has stated that the 9 by 9 meter formation draws its significance partly from the fact that 9 is the highest one digit number in China and that it symbolizes eternity. The balls are made from Huali Wood, each weighs 35 kilograms, and their polyhedron shape is based on sketches by Leonardo da Vinci.
Ai Weiwei got the idea of using this ancient shape from one of his son's plastic toys. Together with his team, he has spent two years exploring the joining methods of traditional Chinese furniture, and the balls are put together completely without the use of either glue, screws or nails.
One of the curators of the exhibition, Feng Boyi, who has been Ai Weiwei's friend for many years, says that the wooden objects are not connected together in any meaningful way. But they are sturdy, and thus serve as a symbolic reference to the rigorous tension of the Chinese social and ethical systems, and as an allegory for the internally stable state of Chinese society, which lacks the potential power of self-adjustment. The work also alludes to the conflict, contradiction and entanglement inherent in China's modern historical progression.
If Ai Weiwei tends to employ the methods of postmodernism, then this satirical, ironic work displays a more directly effective handling method, turning the standards that traditional crafts can provide into something transitory and unreliable, while the delight in the humorous, mischievous and absurd breaking of taboos become all the more thought-provoking.
This movie is produced by film and television students from the University of Bergen. Curators of the exhibition are Feng Boyi and Bjørn Inge Follevaag. Director of KODE, Erlend G. Høyersten, and chief curator at KODE, Eli Okkenhaug are co--curators.

THE SILVER TREASURE
Come admire beautiful objects in gold and sold, made in Bergen over the course of 500 years
Tankards, cups, spoons and jewellery is just some examples of what you can find in the spectacular Silver Treasure exhibition. The exhibition was opened by Her Majesty Queen Sonja on the 7th of May 2009, and is presented in a large display case designed by Kristin Jarmund Architects. For hundreds of years, Bergen has been an important centre for the production of gold and silver objects. The Bergen Goldsmiths' Guild, established in 1568, formed part of an international artisanal community that ensured that the pieces produced were of high quality.
The items have played a central role in both public and private rituals. The wedding ring, the heirloom silverware, and the mayoral collar are all important objects with great symbolic value. For a long time, silver and gold objects also acted as a store of value at a time when there were no banks in Norway, and in recent years they have also become popular collector's items..
PEOPLE AND POSSESSIONS
Explore the history of European design, decorative art and craft-based art from the last 500 years- from majestic rococo cupboards and kitchen tools by Alessi to haute couture by Per Spook and furniture by Le Corbusier and Arne Jacobsen.
The exhibition covers approx. 2000 items that represents all the techniques and materials of the decorative art from the 16 th century till today. Glass, ceramics, porcelain, metal works, fashion, textiles, furniture and carving over a 500 year period. The China Collection is Northern Europe's largest of Buddhist sculptures in marble and was donated by the general J. W. N. Munthe (1864-1935), who was a passionate collector of Chinese art. Also porcelain, jade, bronze, textile and paintings. Changing exhibitions of arts, craft, and design.
ART 1400-1900
On the first floor of KODE 1, you can explore the core of the museum's collections.
The works range from Russian and Greek icons, Old Master paintings and the Norwegian Golden Age, to Norwegian and international Modernism. World renowned artists from the last century such are represented with several works. A separate wing is devoted to 'the father of Norwegian Painting', J.C. Dahl, and his students.
RASMUS MEYER COLLECTION
Experience highlights from the Norwegian 'golden age' of painting and an unique Edvard Munch collection.
Edvard Munch is presented in a new and separate exhibition in the newly reopened Rasmus Meyer Collection in KODE 3. Rasmus Meyer was among the first significant collectors of Munch's art, and he wished to collect works that could provide a more comprehensive impression of Munch's creative development. He secured major works from all of Munch's artistic periods, with the result that Bergen has one of the world's most important collections of Munch's art today. The expressly built mansion dates from 1924 and also houses a fantastic collection of art from the Golden Age in Scandinavian art, as well as historical interiors from the Bergen area. The exhibition includes highlights from the careers of artists such as Christian Krohg, Harriet Backer, Nikolai Astrup, Erik Werenskiold and Gerhard Munthe.
Nikolai Astrup (1880--1928) is one of Norway's most beloved artists.
Above all, he is known for creating lush and wild landscapes and for depicting the traditional life of western Norway. Along with Edvard Munch he expanded the artistic possibilities of woodcuts.
The exhibition includes paintings, prints and drawings.
On the second floor of KODE 4, the main art movements of the 20th century is presented in a new manner.
Which were the major currents in European Modernism? Which tendencies dominated Norwegian and Scandinavian art? And how did the avantgarde make itself known in Bergen?
The new permanent exhibition of the museum's 20th century collection presents both a local and an international perspective, with works by Picasso, Munch, Klee, Jorn, Weidemann, Slettemark, Gruppe 66 and others.

Henrik Håkansson. One Hundred and One Pieces of a Tree (Norwegian Wood)
Teaser av utstillingen One Hundred and One Pieces of a Tree (Norwegian Wood): Åpner 15. november!

IN ENGLISH:
Teaser for One Hundred and One Pieces of a Tree (Norwegian Wood): Opening 15. november!
KODE Art Museum and Composer homes has commissioned a site-specific work by Swedish artist Henrik Håkansson. Håkansson has created a work that is literally rooted in the nature of Bergen. A dead alder, that the artist himself has selected from the Bergen area, has been dissected into hundred and one different pieces.
Throughout his long career, Håkansson has been working with trees, plants, earth, and insects — diffusing the borders between the exhibition space and nature. By allowing nature to play the leading role, juxtaposing the viewer and nature, Håkansson is taking a position that creates unexpected and disquieting results.
Håkansson makes use of methods that often resemble the systematic nature observations of science disciplines, such as dissection and close-up images, simultaneously emphasizing both order and disorder. He debates our complex relationship to nature, not only in relation to ethics and ecology, but also to the very definition of nature that have been cultivated by art and science in the past centuries.
Håkansson has a long international career that stretches back to the mid-1990s, with participation in the Sydney Biennial (2014), the Berlin Biennale (2001), twice in the Venice Biennale (1997, 2003), and with solo exhibitions at De Appel in Amsterdam (2003), Lunds konsthall (2012), Kunsthalle Basel (1999) and Moderna Museet (2003), to name a few.
