Treasure Island is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. It is situated on a barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico.
As of the 2010 census, the city population was 6,705
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.8 km²), of which 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²) is land and 3.7 square miles (9.7 km²) (70.11%) is water.
The area of Treasure Island was originally settled in small communities by the Tocobaga around 300 CE. The Timucua traded with other Native American tribes in the area until the arrival of Pánfilo de Narváez in 1528. De Narváez decimated the indigenous people before leaving the area in search of gold.
Treasure Island got its name early in the 20th century, after several property owners attempted to boost sales of the properties being developed on the island by first burying and then pretending to discover a couple of wooden chests on the beach around 1915. After claiming the chests were filled with treasure, the news of the discovery quickly spread and people began calling the island Treasure Island.
With an elevation of only three feet, the Great Gale of 1848 carved out John's Pass on the island's north end and split off two smaller islands, called the Isle of Palms and Isle of Capri.
Treasure Island saw a surge in residential and hotel construction following World War II through the 1950s. The real estate used in these ventures often consisted of fill from dredged material; that is, artificial extensions of the land were created, which were usually designed for convenient access to navigable waterways.
Legendary baseball slugger Babe Ruth had a winter beachfront home on Treasure Island after his retirement.
Treasure Island today has a thriving bar and restaurant scene in its downtown.
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,450 people, 4,128 households, and 2,059 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,679.0 inhabitants per square mile (1,809.1/km²). There were 5,694 housing units at an average density of 3,576.2 per square mile (1,382.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.69% White, 0.28% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.23% of the population.
There were 4,128 households out of which 10.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.8% were married couples living together, 4.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.1% were non-families. 41.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.80 and the average family size was 2.38.
In the city the population was spread out with 9.2% under the age of 18, 2.7% from 18 to 24, 23.4% from 25 to 44, 38.5% from 45 to 64, and 26.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52 years. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $42,150, and the median income for a family was $64,158. Males had a median income of $38,903 versus $32,586 for females. The per capita income for the city was $34,965. About 3.9% of families and 5.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 0.4% of those under age 18 and 6.9% of those age 65 or over

Adjacent to St. Petersburg and located along the Gulf of Mexico, Treasure Island's white sandy beaches, pristine waters, welcoming hotels, unique restaurants and family-friendly attractions make it the perfect destination for your next vacation. In addition, Treasure Island is just a short drive from St. Petersburg and Tampa and Central Florida's major theme parks.
Treasure Island got its name from an early hotel owner who buried and later re-discovered a couple of wooden chests on the beach. News of the treasure spread quickly. People began calling the area Treasure Island and the name stuck. Today, the real treasure is the town's three-plus miles of white sandy Gulf beach. Here, you can swim, go shelling, sunbathe, snorkel, parasail and savor gorgeous sunsets. Beyond the beach, discover shopping, dining, nightlife and unique events.
The Beaches
Treasure Island is home to one of the area's widest stretch of beach. You'll have plenty of room to spread out, fly a kite, toss a football or play Frisbee. There are concessions and other amenities, too. It's easy to find your own private patch of beach here, but if you want a crowd, you can find one at a beach bar such as Sloppy Joe's.
Just south of the public beach, visit Sunset Beach, one of the best-kept secrets of the St. Pete/Clearwater area. At the southern tip of this mile-and-a-half-long peninsula, the vibe is especially serene. The beach gets a little narrower than the rest of the island, and towering pines give some relief from the sun. On the north end of Sunset Beach, rowdy Caddy's and rockin' Ka'Tiki cater, respectively, to the spring break and blues-loving crowds. Situated between two jetties, Sunset Beach's southern tip is a GLBT hub.
Treasure Island, Florida was first settled by the Timucan Indians around 300 A.D. The Timucan established small communities and traded with other Indian Nations until the arrival of Spaniard Panfilio de Narvaez in 1528. After failing to find the gold he was seeking, de Narvaez left after two weeks leaving behind countless dead and tortured Timucans.
The area slowly became populated by Europeans and their descendants who primarily lived in beach shacks and eeked out a living by fishing and harvesting turtles.
The Great Gale of 1848 created John's Pass on the Island's north end and split off two smaller islands which are now the Isle of Palms and Capri Isle.
Around 1900, St. Petersburg experienced a land boom which brought weekend tourist to the beaches. No bridges existed so travelers had to rely on mostly unreliable ferry service.
The State began selling the Island at a cost of $1.25 an acre. The first hotel was built on Treasure Island in 1915 and was named the Coney Island.
To generate interest in the properties being developed a couple of enterprising property owners buried and then discovered a couple of wooden chests on the beach. Claiming the chests were filled with treasure the news of the discovery spread quickly and people began calling the area Treasure Island. The name stuck.
Planning began on the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge in 1923 but legal and financial disagreements delayed the start of construction until 1938. The bridge was called the best constructed bridge in Florida when completed in 1939.
After World War Two more hotels and homes began to be constructed and in 1955 the City of Treasure Island was incorporated. The 50's also saw the creation of several waterfront neighborhoods by using material dredged from the bay.
Proud of its heritage, today's Treasure Island is a unique blend of a small town laid back beach community and an internationally known family vacation destination. Fun at Sunset Beach Florida 2019
Published on May 24, 2019.
This video shows some of the things I did at Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs Florida during the 2019 winter months.
There is video of the Tarpon Springs High School Jazz Band during a free concert. I can't believe how good these kids are.
There were days off kite boarding, wind surfing, driver flying and just hanging out. A surprise visit from another van dweller, Walt, from New York, makes a cameo appearance in this video.
I hope you enjoy.
