Kaena Point | Hawaii
We did this hike right after the Pink Pillbox Hike in Waianae so we were pretty tired! Still, so worth it~
Pink Pillbox
We started on the south side of the point and parked at Kaʻena State Park. This is an easy flat coastal hike with gorgeous views of the western tip of Oahu. They say at certain times of the year you can see monk seals! You can go as far as you want, it is a nice nature preserve. Since we were tired we only did 1.5 miles in and 1.5 miles out. Next time, we plan to go all the way to the tip !
You can also hike to the point from the Haleiwa or North Shore side.

Hiking Ka'ena Point Trail
The Fligs Family hiked Ka'ena Point Trail while on Oahu prior to our cruise on the Pride Of America. We enjoyed our other hikes better, but checkout what the trail is like.
Kaena Point | Hiking in Hawaii
This trail is located on the westside of the island all the way at the end of Farrington Hwy. We picked the perfect day to do this trail! It was cloudy and not too hot, and we also went late in the day for sunset. During the winter you can watch the whales as they swim by, and we sure did get a show! The trail goes through a bird sanctuary for nesting albatross. We got to see one up close since it was nesting right by the rope. When we reached the tip of the island, there were a bunch of tide pools. To our surprise, there were two Hawaiian monk seals playing in the pools. It was so neat to watch them. We stayed for the sunset, which was incredibly beautiful, and then made our way back to our car in the dark. This trail is pretty easy to walk, although it is a long walk, about 5 miles roundtrip. Usually it is pretty hot and there is no shade along the trail, so make sure to bring PLENTY of water and sunscreen! Some snacks would be good too! Overall I really enjoyed this adventure and want to come back to play in the tide pools!

Ka'ena Point Trail Waianae Side
Hiking Ka'ena Point West Side
On the western tip of Oahu is Kaena Point. This dramatic lava shoreline is said to be the place where souls of ancient Hawaiians would jump off into the spirit world and meet the souls of their ancestors. With scenic views of the Waianae coast to the south, Mokuleia to the north, and the vast Pacific, it's easy to see why this point was deemed so sacred.

Kaena Point State Park to Kaneana Cave 3/1/2019. We take you to and into Kaneana Cave (also called Makua Cave) from Kaena Point Start Park. Just be warned this is a 150,000 year old sacred cave with interesting and darker legends. It is very possibly haunted. I should have been scared to go in to this cave but, I had not read about it until after I needed to write a little description of it's history on here. I have chicken skin just thinking about it and as I worked on this video on the computer it creep-ed me out a lot! I encourage you to read the legends and if you dare to read on about some of the scary stories about it.

KA'ENA POINT (WEST SIDE) | OAHU
January/February is the best time to visit Ka'ena Point, in my humble opinion. Not only is it prime-time whale season, it's when the albatross daddies are sitting on the nests expecting the eggs to hatch! You can catch sight of an egg, or sometimes even a fuzzy little baby albatross - so adorable! The albatross sanctuary is at the end of the hike, where the west side and north shore of Oahu meet. It's also a popular spot for monk seals to rest on the rocks in the sun. There has always been so much to see and marvel at on this hike. My friends and I did this hike annually for the two years I lived there. Now that I've moved away, it doesn't feel right to miss out on this hike this year! So, I dug up my old footage and put this video together to remember how incredible this day was. Also, this is the only time I ever caught a whale breach on camera (fuzzy as it may be)!

Places to see in ( Oahu - USA ) Ka'ena Point State Park
Kaʻena or Kaena Point is the westernmost tip of land on the island of Oʻahu. The point can be reached on foot from both the East and Southeast. An unimproved track extends some 3 miles (4.8 km) along the coast from the end of the paved road on the east side, where a gate prevents entry of all except authorized vehicles. On the southeast side, at Kaʻena State Park, a paved road passes a beach before terminating into an unpaved road. It continues for a few miles, after which the road is washed out, and further travel must be on foot. It is not possible to travel around the point in a vehicle as the route is better described as a path in most places, and is lined on one side with a cliff and on the other with basalt rocks which are quite capable of damaging vehicles.
In Hawaiian, kaʻena means 'the heat'. The area was named after a brother or cousin of Pele who accompanied her from Kahiki. The State of Hawaiʻi has designated the point as a Natural Area Reserve to protect nesting Laysan Albatrosses and wedge-tailed Shearwaters, Hawaiian monk seals, and the fragile (to vehicular traffic) native strand vegetation that has been restored there.
Ka'ena Point is a park and hiking site, and is also known for snorkeling. This uncrowded spot has a white sandy beach that begins from the western tip of Oahu to the Waianae Mountains. Ka'ena Point is one of the best snorkeling places in Oahu; the beach is home to many different fishes, including Hawaii's State Fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. Some ancient Hawaiian folklore states that Kaʻena Point is the jumping-off point for souls leaving this world.
During the winter months, Oʻahu's North Shore is typically bombarded by large, powerful waves that attract surfers from around the world. It is rumored that Kaʻena Point typically has waves (up to 15 metres or 49 feet in height) larger than those at Waimea Bay, one of Oʻahu's world-famous surfing locations. This has not been confirmed; however, during the famous Swell Of The Century in 1969 and on the day of Greg Noll's famous wave at Mākaha, Greg himself took a picture of a gigantic wave breaking at Kaʻena Point. Until Biggest Wednesday on 28 January 1998, when professional surfer Ken Bradshaw was photographed riding a wave with a reported 85-foot (26 m) face, it was believed that Noll's picture showed the largest wave ever photographed. During that famous swell in January 1998, several persons reported seeing waves with 60–80-foot (18–24 m) faces at Kaʻena Point.
In 1899, the Oahu Railway and Land Company constructed a railway that encompassed 70 miles from Honolulu through Kahuku to transport sugarcane. Most of the tracks were destroyed due to a tsunami in 1946. Today, parts of the railroad tracks are still visible along the Ka'ena point trail.
Despite these reports, Kaʻena Point does not have the popularity with surfers of other North Shore locations. Kaʻena Point is located in a remote area with no direct paved road access and no rescue capabilities. Additionally, the point's geography results in undertows, dangerous rip currents and other hazardous ocean conditions that make any water activity highly dangerous.

Ka‘ena Point State Park Hiking ????????
Happy New Year Hike at Ka'ena Point was absolutely stunning! We only got about a mile in, but saw so much beautiful nature. Keep a close eye on the tide pool close up for little fish and sea urchins, then at the end see if you can spot the small plume of spray from a whale (it was a good half mile off the shore and hard to pick up with the camera, it just appears as a white spot in the video). Hoping to catch some real whale watching video later this month when we take a trip on the whale watching cruise.

Walking from Wailua(northshore) to Kaena point to Makaha(leeward)
Decided to try this quite a long journey but the thing is... I usually catch the bus and there is no bus that goes all the way to the place i wanted to try. I can approach it in 2 location. either from the north shore or from the leeward side... figures why not both and just travel straight. I pick north because its the most unfamiliar place for me. this walk basically took me about 7 1/2 hours. ....It is just an hourly record ... but i got lazy eventually and skip some hours...

Waianae Neighborhood Community Center to Kaena Point 3/1/2019. Come ride with us from the Waianae Neighborhood Community Center to the end of Farrington Highway where is Ka'ena Point State Park. We have never been there before. At one time you could go completely around the island. Farrington Highway used to continue on to the Mokuleia side of the island until the road eroded away and fell to into the sea making it unusable. Enjoy!

CAUTION: The Waiʻanae Mountain Range is located on properties owned by the U.S. government, the U.S. military of all branches, the state of Hawaiʻi via departments, and private owners. The mountain ridges and valleys are also home to a delicate and vast array of native plants, animals, and insects. Please take care not to disturb them or their native habitats and always seek permission to access these lands. Always do your research prior to setting out. And finally, once you are out there, always minimize your impact to the environment and of course, be safe.
Hiking Kaena Point: The Edge of Oahu
I recently went hiking at Kaena Point for a group hike and I highly recommend it if you have the time. It’s a great hike on the northwest tip of Oahu with great views of the mountains and the ocean. It’s also a great place to see the occasional monk seal. I recommend bringing plenty of water since there is no shade. The trip was roughly 6 miles total, which took us about two hours and thirty minutes, including time to take pictures at the beach. When you get out there, take your time and enjoy the view. Beautiful hike!
