Kadalekalu Ganesha - Hampi, India
Sasivakallu Ganesha, a monolithic statue of Ganesha on the road to Hampi, Vijayanagara, taken by Thomas Biggs in 1855, from the collection of 'Photographs of views of temples &c in the South Mahratta country. Presented by H. Newton Esq. 23/4/72'. The statue of a seated Ganesha in this view, known as the Sasivakallu Ganesha, is 2.4 metres high and has been carved in a monolithic boulder. It is installed in an open-pillared mandapa near a plain shrine south-east of Hemakuta Hill. The elephant god is represented with ornaments and a serpent tied as a belt around his full belly. Further to the south there is a slightly smaller statue, the Kadalekalu Ganesha, in an open-pillared shrine.

Hampi Utsav 2020 | Kadalekalu Ganesha, Sasivekalu Ganesha | Virupaksha temple
Hampi tourist places Episode 3: In this 3rd episode of Hampi Sightseeing, we are covering Beautiful view from Hemakuta Hills proceeding towards Sasivekalu Ganesha and Kadalekalu Ganesha and ending with Krishna temple.
Hemakuta Hill is one among the best places in Hampi to see the sunrise and sunset; and not as tedious to reach the top say compared to the Matanga Hill nearby, which is boasted as the best location to watch sunset in Hampi. So if you find it difficult to make it to Matanga Hill for sunset view, try from Hemakuta Hill.
Number of temples in this area are dedicated to Lord Siva, the major one being the Virupaksha temple at the north of this hill. This place packed with the largest number of pre Vijayanagara temples. Atop is the Moola Virupaksha Temple with a pool infront, considered to be the original Virupaksha Temple
You can access it mainly through two ways. The first is through the tower located close to the Virupaksha temple’s main entrance. From the very end of the Hampi Bazaar that terminates in front of the Virupaksha temple, take the left (southward) alley. You can see the giant but topless tower to the hilltop. On the way you see the Hampi post office on your right.
The second access point is through the twin storied archway located near the Sasivekalu Ganesha & Kadalekalu Ganesha shrines. The top locations near this archway is a great place to get an aerial view of the Krishna Temple campus just south of it; and the Lakshmi Narasimha & Badivilinga shrines located beyond the Krishna temple.

Sasivekalu & Kadalekalu Ganesha, Narsimha Statue - Hampi, KARNATAKA...Part (3)
On the slope of Hemakuta Hill is the Sasivekalu Ganesha about 2.4 metres tall and ironically named as Sasivekalu
or mustard seed. The God is seated in a large open mantapa with plain rough square pillars. The right hands hold the ankusa and broken tusk, while the upper left holds a looped pasa or noose. The lower left hand and the trunk are broken. This four handed god is a fine example of the Vijayanagara's artistic skills. This Ganesha is fashioned out of a single boulder in sitting position.
Near the Sasivekalu Ganesha is another monolith called, the Kadalekalu (gram seed) Ganesha. The huge seated
God, carved in the round out of a massive boulder, is about 4.5 metres high and is housed in a large shrine with a fine
open pillared mantapa in front. The tall slender granite pillars with many mythological themes carved decorated the front hall of this shrine which is singularly classical in its architectural proportions. The temple also forms one of the important vintage points from which a good and picturesque view could be had of the Hampi monuments. This image of Lakshmi-Narasimha, popularly called Ugranarasimha, meaning Narasimha of terrifying countenance,
is the largest icon in Hampi. This 6.7 m giant monolithic statue of Narasimha which is one of the ten incarnation of
lord Vishnu was cut in a single boulder, Originally, the icon bore a smaller image of Lakshmi sitting on his lap.
HOSPET TO HAMPI | Kadalekalu Ganesha | Road trip|Part 1
Hampi, also referred to as the Group of Monuments at Hampi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in east-central Karnataka, India. It became the centre of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire capital in the 14th century.Chronicles left by Persian and European travellers, particularly the Portuguese, state Hampi was a prosperous, wealthy and grand city near the Tungabhadra River, with numerous temples, farms and trading markets. By 1500 CE, Hampi-Vijayanagara was the world's second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing, and probably India's richest at that time, attracting traders from Persia and Portugal. The Vijayanagara Empire was defeated by a coalition of Muslim sultanates; its capital was conquered, pillaged and destroyed by sultanate armies in 1565, after which Hampi remained in ruins.

-----------------
s the largest Linga image in Hampi. Located next to the Lakshmi Narasimha statue the Linga is housed inside a chamber with an opening in the front. A close look on this icon can reveal three eyes (depicting the three eyes of Shiva) carved on it. Legend has it that this was commissioned by a peasant woman and hence the name (Badva means poor in local tongue).
The sanctum in which the Linga is installed is always filled with water as a water channel is made to flow through it.

Lakshmi Narasimha Temple
---------------------------------------------
This is the largest statue in Hampi. Narasimha is sitting on the coil of a giant seven-headed snake called Sesha. The heads of the snake acts as the hood above his head. The god sits in a cross-legged Yoga position with a belt supporting the knees.
Sometimes this is referred as Ugra Narasimha (i.e. Narasimha in its terrifying form). The protruding eyes and the facial expression are the basis for this name.
Narasimha (means half-man’half-lion in local the languages) is on of the ten incarnations (avatar) of Lord Vishnu.
The original statue contained the image of goddess Lakshmi, consort of the god, sitting on his lap. But this statue has been damaged seriously during the raid leading to the fall of Vijayanagara. Even the damaged portion of such a large statue of Lakshmi carved on his lap is missing. Probably it may be laying around in tiny pieces. But the goddess’s hand is visible resting on his back in embracing posture. If you get a chance to go inside this enclosure, it is possible to see the hand of the goddess. Even the nails & the rings on her fingers are so perfectly executed.
Lion face of Lakshmi Narasimha also sometimes called as Unganarasimha (the ferocious Narasimha).

13th Video of Series: Sasivekalu Ganesha
Thanks to the resemblance the giant monolithic Ganesha statue is locally called Sasivekalu(mustard seed)Ganesha. This is located on the southern foothill of the Hemakuta Hill.
In Hindu mythology Lord Ganesha (also known as Ganapathi or Vinayaka) is notorious for his food habit. One day he ate so much of food that his tummy almost busted. He just caught a snake and tied it around his tummy as a belt to save his tummy from bursting.
On this statue you can see the snake carved around his tummy. Also he holds the goad, pasha (noose), and his broken tusk. The hand which holds modak (a kind of sweet ball) is broken and not reconstructed. This monolithic statue carved out of a huge boulder measures about 2.4 meters (8 feet). An open pavilion is build around the statue. According to inscriptions found nearby this pavilion was built by a trader from Chandragiri (in present day Andhra Pradesh)in 1506 AD, in memory of one of the Vijayanagara king – Narasimha II (1491-1505 AD)
A bit north of Sasivekalu Ganesha is another giant statue of Ganesha, called The Kadalekalu Ganesha. A bit south of Sasivekalu Ganesha is the Vishnupada shrine. All these are walkable from one to another and can be covered in 30-45 minutes.
Just in front of Sasivekalu Ganesha shrine you can see a huge site map of Hampi installed by the archeology department.
No admission fee & Photography allowed free of cost.

Stone Chariot || Hampi || Karnataka || India || Backpackers Ride
The "Stone Chariot", as it is often referred is the flagship tourist attraction of Hampi. This is not a chariot ,as the
name suggests, rather a shrine built like a chariot. This is located inside the Vittala Temple campus. You would be
visiting the Stone Chariot as part of your Vittala Temple tour.
Every tourist place has that one spot which earns it galore and admiration for Hampi, the small, dainty
temple village set in Karnataka, it’s the iconic stone chariot. It’s the leading man in the army of exquisite
beautiful sights that Hampi has to offer and depicts Karnataka tourism an icon itself.
The chariot was built by King Krishnadevaraya of the Vijayanagara Empire during the 16 th century, who
got fascinated with the Konark Sun temple chariot while fighting a battle in Odissa. The chariot is meant
to represent the beauty and artistic perfection of the Empire. An interesting folklore emanates from the
Hampichariotas villagers believe that the world would come to a halt when the chariot moves from its
place. It has come to have a sacrosanct presence and is internationally recognized as a world heritage
site even by the UNESCO.
Inspired by the Dravidian style ofarchitecture, the chariot is a colossal structure which shows the skill of
the earlier craftsmen and architects. The beauty of the chariot lies in the fact that it looks like one solid
structure but in fact, has been built by slabs of granite whose linkages have been cleverly hidden with
artistic designs.
