West Lunga National Park Initiative | Northwest Zambia
Once described as a little known game reserve by W.F Ansell, author of An International History of Mammalogy (1991) this unique National park is in need of support. Located in the Northwestern Province of Zambia, Africa, the West Lunga National park has faced years of neglect through lack of development, poaching and inaccessibility. In 2014 the Trident Foundation, a not-for-profit, was established in a new town development near to the park. The Wildlife and Conservation department have undertaken the mammoth task to assist the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to manage the park. Coverage over the 12,000 square kilometers has increased, as resources for patrols and communications have improved. This initiative is in need of additional support. Discover Zambia: From the Remote, Pristine Kafue to the Legendary Victoria Falls
Dominating the wild and remote north-west of Zambia’s legendary Kafue National Park are the vast Busanga wetlands and floodplains – the latter a sweeping, seasonally inundated grassland boasting some of the most pristine and diverse habitat in Africa. Speciality antelope and birds are found in astonishing abundance, followed by predators large and small. Wilderness Safaris took a leap of faith more than a decade ago to offer safaris here for just five months of the year, providing life-changing employment to local community members as well as a vital anti-poaching presence. To the south, just upstream of the legendary Victoria Falls along the mystical Zambezi River, is serenely beautiful Toka Leya – the ideal starting (or finishing) point to a purposeful Zambian safari.

Ngonye Falls, Sioma Ngwezi National Park, Zambia
Also known as Sioma Falls because these Falls are near the village of Sioma. These beautiful Falls mark the transition point of the Zambezi Rivers' flow from Kalahari sand floodplain to basalt dyke -- the latter eventually contributing to the magnificent gorges of the Victoria Falls.
The horseshoe-shaped Ngonye Falls are mostly impressive because of the sheer volume of water that cascades over the staggered, twenty meter drop. An interesting aspect is that the river flows underneath the rock on either side of the falls. It is quite remarkable to stand upon them, feeling and hearing the underground flow.
The best option is to spend the night at the nearby Matumwa Lodge, owned and managed by 1995 South African Rugby World Cup team player, Gavin Johnson, and his wife Penny. There are also a couple of simple camps at Senanga which also offer guided trips to the Falls.
Alternatively, get to the village of Sioma and ask for a guide to take you to the Falls. It is best viewed by walking about two kilometres downstream of Sioma. There is usually a dugout canoe that will ferry you across the Zambezi - this in itself is an adventure - then a further two kilometre walk back upstream will take you to the Falls' best vantage point. There's also a spot called The Jacuzzi where you can safely swim in amongst the swirling waters.
The Falls provide great photo opportunities at any time of the year, but the optimum time is around June or July. Rafting is best from February to May after the rains. Wildlife is best viewed from July to November, when water is scarce and the animals are forced to come to the water holes or down to the river to drink.
The Weekend | Kabompo River, Zambia
Friends who are travelling overland came by the Northwest Province of Zambia to visit. So we went down to the river for a night out under the stars, for some good laughs, tiger fish and cold beers.
