Japan Travel: Awesome Kagoshima - 鹿児島

Kagoshima is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture, located at the southwest end of the island of Kyushu in Japan. Kagoshima is sometimes called Japanese Napolinya because it is located in the bay (Aira Caldera), hot weather and the Sakurajima volcano.
As of January 1, 2005, the city is estimated to have a population of 605,650 people and a density of 1,107.81 people per km². The area is 546.71 km². Kagoshima has an international airport called Kagoshima Airport.

Kagoshima is the birthplace of Saigo Takamori, an important figure in the Meiji period, and also Togo Heihachiro, Japan's biggest naval hero. Heihachiro led the Japanese Navy fleet twice defeating Russia in 1904 and 1905, destroying Russia's reputation as a sea power in the East.

In addition, the city was also the place where the Japanese met Christian adherents for the first time, during the Spanish missionary, Francis Xavier arrived here in 1549 and was greeted warmly.

鹿児島空港(KOJ)は鹿児島県霧島市にある空港で、九州では福岡空港に次ぐ第2位の旅客乗降数を誇る。海上保安庁第十管区海上保安本部鹿児島航空基地を併設している。
鹿児島空港の場所は、鹿児島県霧島市の通称・十三塚原にある。国内離島路線を多く抱えており、第二種空港として有数の規模である。
旧・鹿児島空港は1932年、鹿児島市の中心にほど近い鴨池地区に鹿児島市営水陸両用飛行場として建設された。第二次世界大戦中の1940年に海軍航空隊鹿児島基地として改装され、1,500m×600mの滑走路と16,900平方メートルの格納庫を擁し、練習航空隊の教育などに使用されたが、1957年、鹿児島基地の跡地に鹿児島空港（通称・鴨池空港）が第二種空港として開港した。1972年に空港が現在地に移転したため、旧空港は廃止となった。

Kagoshima Airport is located in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and boasts the second largest number of passengers in Kyushu after Fukuoka Airport. It also has Kagoshima Air Base, Japan Coast Guard's 10th Regional Coast Guard Headquarters.
The location of Kagoshima Airport is located in Jusizukabara, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It has many domestic island routes and is one of the leading airports of its kind.
The former Kagoshima Airport was constructed in 1932 as a Kagoshima Municipal Amphibious Airfield in the Kamoike district, near the center of Kagoshima City. Reconstructed as a Navy Air Corps Kagoshima base in 1940 during World War II, it has a runway of 1,500 mx 600 m and a hangar of 16,900 square meters, and was used for education of training aviation, but in 1957 Kagoshima Kagoshima Airport (aka Kamoike Airport) opened as a second-class airport on the site of the base. The old airport was retired in 1972 as the airport moved to its current location.

The street was named after the Tenmonkan Observatory (also known as Meijikan) which helped develop astronomy and almanacs during the Edo Era. Currently now known as Kagoshima’s premier shopping district, visitors can enjoy shopping and dining. There are plenty of restaurants which serve shochu and the famous Kagoshima delicacy of kurobuta (pork) shabu-shabu. In addition, choosing souvenirs isn’t too difficult here.
