Exploring the Tablelands - Travel New Zealand - Kahurangi National Park
Starting at the Flora Carpark about one hours drive from Nelson city we quickly gained a vantage point over the Kahurangi National Park just above Mt Arthur Hut. From here it was a quick 2 hour climb to the top of Mt Arthur. We even spotted a family with young (~10yrs old) kids doing this walk! We spent two nights out in the park, one at Salisbury Hut, and one at the Upper Grid Iron Shelters. Highly recommended. For more information see:

Beautiful walk with changing landscapes in the middle of nowhere.
The Heaphy Track, located in Kahurangi National Park at the north-west corner of the South Island, is the longest of the DOC Great Walks. For 78.4 kilometres the track crosses the Park's range of landscapes, starting from the junction of the Brown and Aorere Rivers, over expansive tussock downs to the lush forests, nikau palms and roaring seas of the West Coast.

Soper Shelter Opening | Kahurangi National Park | Golden Bay Alpine & Tramping Club
On 16 April 2016, local tramping legends gathered to celebrate the opening of an iconic 1930s-style tent camp at the head of Lake Stanley - an initiative of the Golden Bay Alpine & Tramping Club.

Frank Soper, the 91-year-old founder of the club, dedicated the new hut to his late wife Berna. Ex-NZFS ranger, Piers Maclaren read from Frank's bush poetry book. President John Pemberton explained the hard yakka involved. John Taylor (DOC) shared his feelings on building another rustic shelter.

Ray John Salisbury filmed the event, in memory of the original musterer, John Park Salisbury. (The first hut nearby was probably built by his son Frank Stanley Salisbury, more than a century ago. He drove wild cattle as far as the Stanley River.)
