South Island NEW ZEALAND: Christchurch, Kaikoura, Picton
September trip traveling around the South Island of New Zealand
For our 21st we decided to explore a beautiful back yard and head down to the South Island of New Zealand.
We left from Palmerston North flying Air New Zealand and arrived in the South Island touching down in Christchurch.
From Christchurch airport we were picked up by Omega Car Rentals where we purchased a $1 a day car relocation rental.
We headed in to Christchurch CBD were we stayed at the Breakfree in Cashel. From Cashel we went down to the local Snowboard shop were we picked up our rentals for the following day.
With the sunset apon us we took advantage of the free shuttle to Christchurch Casino for a night of gambling and excitment to celebrate being 21. After cutting our losses we headed back for a early wakeup.
Day 2: With the snowboards loaded in the rental we made the just over a hour drive to Porters Pass ski field for a dayon the snow. The sceneray on the way was worth the drive by itself which i'd highly recommend. To end off our second day we called the casino shuttle again and headed to the building accross the road, those who have been there know this can be a very expensive street.
Day 3: With the car boared up we headed North were our first stop off was Kaikoura. We decided to check out the advertisment for scenic flights we saw just before Kaikoura and discovered we could learn to fly which defiantly ended up being a highlift of the trip for myself. Full of excitement we countined our road trip were we ended in Picton for the night. 10 minutes out of Picton we found the Ohau Seal Colony were we got to experince baby seals in there natrual habitat.
Day 4: After a big night down the local pub we found ourselfs struggling to awake before the 10 o clock leave time.
We spent the morning exploring Picton and the beautiful views of Charlottes Bay before jumping on the InterIslander that afternoon.
For a quick overview these were the places we visited:
(not in order)
Kaikoura Beach
BlueBridge Ferry Picton to Wellington
Ohau Waterfall - Baby seal colony
Porters Ski Area
Queen Charlotte bay Track
Porters Pass
Kaikoura Airport

Kaikoura earthquake moved South Island 6 metres closer to North Island
New research shows the earthquake pushed parts of the South Island six metres closer to the North, and raised Waipapa Bay by up to eight metres.
KAIKOURA SOUTH ISLAND NEW ZEALAND
Kaikoura New Zealand
Kaikoura is definitely the small town to visit while you're visiting NZ south island. It's about 3 hours drive from Christchurch. I suggest the best season to visit the town is Winter. For visitors who never saw snow, taking a walk from the bus stop to Ohau Point would be the best way to explore the whole Kaikoura. You will be amazed by the snow mountains range. Do stop by the black-sand beach steal the best views of your photography. Last, take a further walk to the Ohau Point to see seal colony in the wild which you might not be able to see anywhere else in your lifetime.

Vanlifers New Zealand - Kaikoura to Lake Pukaki - Odd Life Crafting Ep.1.14 ( Morando em uma van )
During our sabbatical months we took a road trip in New Zealand as vanlifers. We went from Kaikoura to Lake Pukaki and had the opportunity to pass by Christchurch, the city that has being rebuilt after the earthquake of 2011 . Roberta
“After I finished my civil engineering degree in Brazil in the end of 2015 I decided that I wanted to take an extra step. So with the full support of my long time adventure partner I started a Master Degree at Sydney University and that’s how we sold most of our belongings and moved from Brazil to Australia. But 6 months later we realized that actually that was not what we were looking for. So instead of flying back straight to our country, we decided to take a few sabbatical months and travel until the end of 2016. The plan was simple, we wanted to travel to places where it is cheap and/or comfortable, and take the time to think about our own lives so we could decide what we wanted to do from 2017 and on. That’s the story we tell in this first season of Odd Life Crafting” Duca

Duca

The Kaikoura UFO sighting continues to baffle, 30 years on
Video url
Full Story
It has been almost 30 years since unidentified flying objects were observed off the coast of Kaikoura during the Christmas/New Year break of 1978.
The sightings are to be marked soon with a commemorative flight, a gathering of enthusiasts and even a musical.
At the time, news of the sightings was reported worldwide and to this day they remain a huge source of controversy.
But the remarkable thing about the sightings is whatever was flying around that night was not just observed, it showed up on radar too and was caught on film.
It is one of New Zealand's biggest mysteries and one of the world's best documented sightings of a UFO.
The most important thing I think about his story is that even to this day, the flight crew and the air traffic controllers are adamant that we saw something highly unusual that can't be explained in mundane terms, says journalist Quentin Fogarty. Now, 30 years later, they still believe that.
