Kaiping Diaolou and Villages (UNESCO/NHK)
Kaiping Diaolou and Villages feature the Diaolou, multi-storeyed defensive village houses in Kaiping, which display a complex and flamboyant fusion of Chinese and Western structural and decorative forms. They reflect the significant role of émigré Kaiping people in the development of several countries in South Asia, Australasia and North America, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. There are four groups of Diaolou and twenty of the most symbolic ones are inscribed on the List. These buildings take three forms: communal towers built by several families and used as temporary refuge, residential towers built by individual rich families and used as fortified residences, and watch towers. Built of stone, pise , brick or concrete, these buildings represent a complex and confident fusion between Chinese and Western architectural styles. Retaining a harmonious relationship with the surrounding landscape, the Diaolou testify to the final flowering of local building traditions that started in the Ming period in response to local banditry.

Kaiping Diaolou Watch Towers & Chikan Old Town in China 開平碉樓 & 赤坎古鎮
Diaolou, Kaiping
Proposed World Heritage Classification: Cultural Site
Location: Kaiping City, Guangdong Province
The diaolou or fortified watchtowers found in Kaiping, Guangdong Province, were first constructed in the early Qing dynasty (1644~1912). They reached their peak in the 1920s and 1930s when there were estimated to be more than three thousand of these structures and according to a recent survey carried out by the Kaiping City Government, there are over 1800 diaolou still standing. In 2001 the State Council declared the Kaiping Diaolou a Protected Cultural Relic in view of their special significance in China's vernaculararchitecture.
The Diaolou were fortress-like buildings constructed with a dual function in mind: for housing and as a defensive structure to provide protection against forays by bandits. The multi-storey towers had thick walls with slits for surveillance and their solid structure meant that they could withstand both enemy attacks and inclement weather such as flooding.
Since the fourteenth century, Kaiping has traditionally been a region of major emigration abroad, and a melting pot of ideas and trends brought back by overseas Chinese made good. This is also reflected in the plethora of influences seen in the architectural styles of the watchtowers, with the interesting feature that western details are produced with local bricks and materials.
EP7: KAIPING Diaolou Watchtowers | UNESCO Heritage | My Village near Hoiping, CHINA | Family Tree
For the first time, my family gets to visit the small village where my sister and I were born and raised. We visit my late Grandma's burial. We see the historical family tree that my Great Grandfather planted many years ago!
Next we explore the Kaiping Diaolou Watch Towers, which are a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site and covers four separate Kaiping village areas: Sanmenli (三门里), Zilicun (自力村), Jinjiangli (锦江里), and Majianglong village cluster (马降龙村落群). Though we only got to visit Majianglong. We check out the Nan Lou tower in Chikan (aka South Tower of the Seven Martyrs), which if you see at the END of the video, there is a large light-brown monument... and those are the Seven Martyrs, which I gravely mistaken to mention.

The Unusual Diaolou Towers of Kaiping, China
Steve and I came to Guangzhou for one reason only - to see the unusual and fortified multi-story towers in Kaiping, called Diaolou. Kaiping is a 2-3 hour ride from Guangzhou, depending on traffic.
These Diaolou were constructed by villagers during the Ming Period as protection from roaming bandits and at one time, there were over 3,000 towers; approximately 1,800 Diaolou remain standing and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site while only a few are open to visitors. We visited Zili Village and walked through three different Diaolou.

A VISIT TO WONG VILLAGE IN KAIPING , CHINA (HOIPING)
This village had built guard towers overlooking the village, to protect against robbery and attack.
Kaiping Diaolou, China
The oldest surviving watchtower house was built more than 400 years ago to protect the villagers from thieves and floods. The rest were mostly built from the 1900's to the 30's using money sent home from Chinese who worked in North America. Some of them never made it home though. Those photos were taken in Feb 2006.

China Heritage: Overseas Chinese Towns - Tai Shan & Kai Ping
Visit the UNESCO-listed Kai Ping Diao dou (開平碉樓) and the beautiful spots like Mei's Grand Courtyard (梅家大院) in the historic towns in Taishan (台山) in Southern China!
Many people in the once-underprivileged region were sold to foreign country, particularly America, for gold rush. They later brought back their wealth to their hometown and converted them into gorgeous western-influenced towns that remain until today even though they appear to be partly abandoned since 1940s. Towns like Tai Shan and Kai Ping has the finest surviving examples of western-influenced pre-war Chinese tenement, which was once common in Hong Kong.
