Five Houses for Five Sons in Li Gardens, Kaiping, China
Xie Wei Li built huge and magnificent gardens, called Li Gardens, near Zili Village between 1926-1936 for his five sons, along with five identical houses for each one. Steve and I had almost no time to spend exploring the massive gardens with an over two-hour drive remaining back to Guangzhou. Entrance to the gardens was through a new Visitor's Center that tourists could spend hours in; reading about the Diaolous, watching short movies about them, looking at cultural relics and more information.
There were pavilions, a separate house for the master's favorite wife who died in childbirth, streams running through, pagodas, different gardens, and a splendid arcade that resembled the one at Beijing's Summer Palace but with modern decorations included among the old. Really a magnificent place that we couldn't do justice to.

The Unusual Diaolou Towers of Kaiping, China
Steve and I came to Guangzhou for one reason only - to see the unusual and fortified multi-story towers in Kaiping, called Diaolou. Kaiping is a 2-3 hour ride from Guangzhou, depending on traffic.
These Diaolou were constructed by villagers during the Ming Period as protection from roaming bandits and at one time, there were over 3,000 towers; approximately 1,800 Diaolou remain standing and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site while only a few are open to visitors. We visited Zili Village and walked through three different Diaolou.

POWER STEAM WOK COOKING
Steaming also produces liquid which also goes to the bottom of the wok. The congee at the bottom of the wok is delicious because it picks up all the flavors from the meats, fish and vegetables that had been steamed. I enjoyed this power steam wok cooking in Hoiping, China.

The oldest surviving watchtower house was built more than 400 years ago to protect the villagers from thieves and floods. The rest were mostly built from the 1900's to the 30's using money sent home from Chinese who worked in North America. Some of them never made it home though. Those photos were taken in Feb 2006.

Location: Kaiping City, Guangdong Province
The diaolou or fortified watchtowers found in Kaiping, Guangdong Province, were first constructed in the early Qing dynasty (1644~1912). They reached their peak in the 1920s and 1930s when there were estimated to be more than three thousand of these structures and according to a recent survey carried out by the Kaiping City Government, there are over 1800 diaolou still standing. In 2001 the State Council declared the Kaiping Diaolou a Protected Cultural Relic in view of their special significance in China's vernaculararchitecture.
The Diaolou were fortress-like buildings constructed with a dual function in mind: for housing and as a defensive structure to provide protection against forays by bandits. The multi-storey towers had thick walls with slits for surveillance and their solid structure meant that they could withstand both enemy attacks and inclement weather such as flooding.
Since the fourteenth century, Kaiping has traditionally been a region of major emigration abroad, and a melting pot of ideas and trends brought back by overseas Chinese made good. This is also reflected in the plethora of influences seen in the architectural styles of the watchtowers, with the interesting feature that western details are produced with local bricks and materials.

世遺開平4A華僑豪碉[立園]及鳳儀里集眾碉堡-粵語解述2018 Diaolous in Kaiping
開平立園位於廣東省江門市開平塘口鎮賡華村，是塘口鎮旅美華僑謝維立的私人園林。開平立園以人名作園名，有“立樹立人”的含義。開平立園從1926年動工建設，1936年初步建成，占地約19600平方米，集傳統園藝、西洋建築、江南水鄉特色於一體，其獨特建築藝術風格在中國園林中獨樹一幟，是中國較為完整的組合。興建歷時十年，民國25年（1936年）初步建成的。1957年，中南局第一書記陶鑄等曾到立園參觀，並指示要保護好立園的一草一木。立園曾成為“中南局老幹部療養所”。1983年3月23日，開平縣人民政府把立園列為第一批縣級文物保護單位。1999年10月10日，園主夫人謝余瑤瓊女士（謝維立遺孀），在美國欣然與開平市人民政府互訂合約，誠意委託市人民政府代管。立園可分為三部分：別墅區、大花園區、小花園區。三個區用人工河或圍牆分隔，又巧妙地用橋亭或通天回廊將三個區連成一體，園中有園，景中有景，亭台樓榭，佈局幽雅，獨具匠心，令人有巧奪天工之感。整個立園不但在建築物構圖獨異，而種植花草樹木也構思獨特、新穎，各種名花異草、風景樹等，應有盡有。
開平鳳儀里碉樓群旅遊區位於世界文化遺產碉樓之鄉-----塘口鎮，毗鄰沈海高速，距沈海高速塘口出口僅3公里，距珠三角各大城市僅100分鐘車程，交通十分便利。 如今鳳儀裡僑胞大多分佈在美國、加拿大和香港地區，該村目前已經沒有村民居住，形成了名副其實的無人村落，儘管村裡看不到人煙，每一座建築在歲月流逝中也漸漸變得破敗不堪，然而從這個村莊零星剩下的邊邊角角，仍可以看出，它是一個曾經輝煌的村莊。鳳儀里古村落占地面積約500多畝，由碉樓、曬穀場、鄉間田野、古井、魚塘，翠竹環繞等組成，是最典型的開平碉樓古村落展示旅遊區。開平碉樓形態萬千，風格多變，按建築材料總結起來只有四種：石樓，夯土樓，磚樓和混凝土樓，在鳳儀裡就能欣賞到這四種類型的房屋結構。景區內碉樓建築錯落有致，大量建築物運用磚雕、灰雕、石雕等傳統工藝建造，更有能工巧匠繪製的大量民間壁畫，具有極高的藝術價值。有些樓內保存著一部分傢俱、生活設施、生產用具和日常生活用品，豐富而有趣，是當時華僑文化與生活的見證。而碉樓閣、野花、參天古樹更將景區內各個建築有機結合，移步換景，景景相連，景在人中，人在景中，讓人仿如置身于一幅精美畫卷中。鳳儀裡突出了百年的鄉土文化與景觀，根據現有資料查證，開平碉樓最早興建於１６世紀中葉，大規模興建於２０世紀一二十年代，之後逐漸減少，最後一座碉樓建於１９４９年。開平碉樓由興起到衰落，最主要的原因是社會由動盪走向安定，但還有一個重要因素，就是開平籍華僑華人的主要僑居國美國、加拿大對華移民政策發生了演變。這個經歷過百年歷史沉澱的鄉間小村落，是華僑同胞們心系祖國、情牽桑梓的縮影，這裡的每一座建築，都蘊含著一種獨特的鄉土情懷，凝聚著華僑同胞們戀祖愛鄉、落葉歸根的赤子之心。
