Crook Cook” at Cook’s Plaza on Kaiti Hill Gisborne
A STATUE of the Maori chief at the time of Captain Cook’s landing would be the best figure to have on top of Titirangi (Kaiti Hill), say Ngati Oneone. Repeated vandalism of a statue known as the ‘‘crook Cook” at Cook’s Plaza on Kaiti Hill, installed to commemorate the explorer’s arrival, has raised a question of whether it should be there at all.
The statue, based on an unknown Italian admiral, has been vandalised for the third time in recent weeks. Posts on social media have turned into debates about the relevance and meaning of the statue. Many said the statue symbolises the beginning of colonisation and therefore in a way, the demise of Maori culture from 1769 onwards. Many comments referenced the statue as a reminder and representation of the use of te reo Maori later being prohibited and loss of land, among many other things.

Poverty Bay - Gisborne New Zealand
The city of Gisborne is located at the north end of Poverty Bay. The white cliff headland of Young Nick's Head at the other end of the bay is visible from the city. The cliffs can be seen in the left hand side of the sat photo. The Māori name for the cliffs is Te Kurī-a-Pāoa,meaning The Dog of Pāoa, as this was what it was originally said to look like.
This prominence was the first part of New Zealand sighted by the crew of Captain James Cook's ship Endeavour, and was named for the crew member who first saw it. A memorial to Cook stands on the foreshore, marking the point where he first stepped ashore in New Zealand on 8 October 1769.
On the right hand side of the sat photo at the other end of the bay, known as Poverty Bay, is Kaiti Hill. This hill overlooks the city and magnificent views can be obtained by driving or walking to the summit.
It is sometimes known as the City of Rivers as the centre of the city is the convergence of three different rivers, one of which is the shortest river in the country at 1200 m long.[5]
Gisborne boasts being the first city in the world to greet the sun each day. However, in 2011, Samoa decided to skip a day to be moved westward across the international dateline, to align with trade partners, and its capital Apia thus can now claim that title. Before that move, however, Gisborne's claim was technically only true for part of the year. Both Suva, Fiji, and Nukuʻalofa, Tonga, are closer to the International Date Line and therefore would seem more likely candidates for this title. Due to the Earth's tilt on its axis, however, Gisborne does overtake their claim as New Zealand summer days grow longer. In the longest days of summer, though, it again loses the title to the hillier suburbs of Dunedin in the South Island.
The city has the benefit of being very close to Waikanae and Midway beaches, both within easy walking distance of the city centre. Wainui Beach is 8 km from the city. It has consistent surf, and the local surf club has produced several world champions.

Awesome Road Trip To Gisborne Eastcoast Vibes Reggae Concert.
On Friday 27th January 2017, me and Wiri Te Moni did a road trip to Gisborne to go to the Eastcoast Vibes Reggae concert that is held annually every year in Gisborne.
We first stopped off in a little town called Matamata for some breakfast. Then we stopped off in Ohope at the lookout point with magnificent views of White Island ( Whakaari ) which is till still day an active volcano. Then we made our way towards Opotiki where we filled up our water bottles of fresh spring water. Then we travelled to Gisborne where we checked in at the Emerald Hotel Gisborne central.

Titirangi (Kaiti Hill) Tree planting
A GROUP of hearty volunteers got stuck into weeding and maintaining new plantings on Titirangi. The trees and shrubs were planted last winter on the port side of the hill during a series of school and community planting sessions with Ngati Oneone, as part of a project to restore native bush on the special maunga.
Gisborne District Council project manager Andy Kinsella said many of the new plantings suffered in the near- drought conditions over summer. They had about a 50 percent survival rate. The ngaio and akeake did well, while the manuka and kanuka struggled. Yesterday’s work was in preparation for more winter planting. They will put about 300 more plants in this winter. Green Party MP and East Coast nominee Gareth Hughes was in Gisborne for his party’s East Coast election campaign launch and joined the volunteer effort to help out. “I used to run up this hill as a kid every morning, so it is nice to be giving something back. “This is such a taonga for the entire region. This hill is so special to so many people and I think everyone can get behind the vision of a beautiful hill covered in native bush.” The volunteer session was part of a monthly series on Kaiti Hill, with the next session on May 17. They are part of the weekly Volunteer Wednesdays programme, from 10am-12pm, run by GDC, Department of Conservation and Tairawhiti Environment Centre.
