The Kaituna River is in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is the outflow from Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti, and flows northwards for 45 kilometres , emptying into the Bay of Plenty near Te Puke. It was the subject of a claim concerning the effluent flowing down the river from Lake Rotorua, which resulted in movement to a land treatment system. The upper section of the Kaituna, also referred to as Okere River, offers some of the best whitewater kayaking and rafting in the world, with the Okere Falls area containing the highest commercially rafted waterfall, 7 metres , in the world. It is also famous for its trout fishing.

The Kaituna Okere Falls - 500 - Full Run - RAW Guide - Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

The Okere Falls section of the Kaituna River is a classic piece of New Zealand whitewater. This short section of whitewater is easily accessible, just 20 minutes drive outside of Rotorua, and has a short shuttle making laps easy. This run is a very safe pool drop class 3/4 style run with several waterfalls on it. Flows on this run are controlled by a dam at put-in and range from 100s to 1200s. This lap was at 500s, a medium flow common during the winter time.

I hired a guide from Kaituna Kayaks ( to lead me down the Kaituna river in NZ. The river is class III-IV, with two notable drops - Powerhouse rapid, and Okere Falls, a 7 meter drop.

Filmed on a GoPro HD (60 fps), with a few shots from a Canon 5d Mark II (inexperienced operator auto-focused on the tree 20 feet in front of him instead of the falls 150 ft away, so footage is iffy).

This river was incredible, I'd highly recommend paddling it (or rafting if you don't paddle). I'd also highly recommend my guide, Sam from Kaituna Kayaks. Check him out on youtube at

Kaituna Lower Gorges - New Zealand White Water Kayaking

Downstream of the extremly popular Okere Falls section of the Kaituna are three gorges: Awesome, Gnarly and Smokey. Here is a short video of Awesome and Smokey which are examples of the very best New Zealand has to offer in very tight committing gorges.
