BOTSWANA TRAVEL DOCUMENTARY | 4x4 Safari Road Trip feat. Victoria Falls
Part One - NAMIBIA:
My Gear:
Follow us on our road trip safari through southern Africa's wildlife paradise Botswana. We drove through most of Botswana, including all the wildlife-rich areas like the Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe Nationalpark including the Chobe Riverfront and the Kalahari. We explored the Makgadikgadi salt pans in the center of the country, the Gcwihaba Caverns in the West and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the south. We also shortly ventured into Simbabwe to marvel upon the majestic Victoria Falls. We were lucky enough to spot most of the big, and many small, animals which call Botswana home. These include elephants, giraffes, lions, hippos, kudus, oryx, ostriches, honey badgers, bat-eared foxes, serval cats, warthogs, springboks, impalas and many more.

Self Drive CKGR Botswana
At 52 800 square km, Central Kalahari Game Reserve, referred to as CKGR, is the second largest game reserve in the world. Larger than Lesotho and Swaziland combined.
A desert in name, the CKGR supports diverse habitats - from salt pan to savanna. The land is home to at least 64 species of mammals and 250 types of birds.
Meandering through these great open spaces are four fossil river valleys - the most famous being Deception.
Countless pans and dunes are concentrated in the northern third of the Reserve.
The roads around Deception are in excellent condition, but could become slippery during the wet season and 4 wheel drive might be necessary.
It is here in Deception Valley where Mark and Delia Owen researched the brown hyena for 7 years. Their book Cry of the Kalahari makes excellent reading.
The valley is scattered with islands of trees. Here on one of these islands, the Owens have put up camp.
The world-renowned San people have lived in this area for perhaps 30 000 years.
Originally the reserve was set up in 1961 to protect the natural resources on which the San Hunter-gatherer-lifestyle depended.
Botswana Reise - Offroad durch die Kalahari Reisebericht mit Tipps und Tricks für Selbstfahrer
Sunlander´s Webseite:

Highlights from the April/May 2019 Botswana Wilderness Tour. The Botswana Wilderness Safari combines 3 of Wilderness Safaris’s camps in various parts of the Okavango Delta with the aim of exposing our group of 4 guests to the full range of habitats and environments that the delta has to offer. In terms of the timing, we are right on the shoulder of high season in the delta and have been able to take advantage of the significantly discounted rates without compromising on our game viewing and photographic safari experience!

Self Drive Botswana Free 4x4 Travel Guide.
Self Drive 4X4 Adventure. Complete Full Version Travel Guide.
Before You Go See This Video. Comprehensive Travel Guide. Now free to view on YouTube. Our route starts at the border with South Africa and takes us to the northern part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (Deception Valley), from where we travel on to Maun – the Gateway to the Okavango Delta. We then headed north to Moremi, on to Savute, Linyanti and Ihaha in the beautiful Chobe National Park. We end our adventure in the town of Kasane in the North Eastern side of Botswana close to the magnificent Victoria Water Falls. Topics featured are National Parks, relevant towns, hotels and lodges, camping sites, road conditions and useful tips regarding your adventure. Since Africa has opened up for Tourist, many 4X4 owners and nature lovers are planning to visit various destinations offered by countries north of the Limpopo. The most popular destination is Botswana, without a doubt one of Africa’s last real bastions of game. A land of contrasts – from the harsh beauty of Central Kalahari to the lush woodlands of the Okavango Delta. Adventure Films recognized the need of many 4X4 owners for more information regarding this beautiful country. The adventurers who want to arrange their own 4X4 safari to Botswana are sometimes skeptical of going, due to the lack of information available regarding facilities, accommodation, road conditions and many more. For this reason, the video “The Botswana Adventure” was produced. The video is not a wildlife film. The purpose of this production is to inform potential visitors to Botswana about relative aspects that could assist them in planning their 4X4 adventure.

Road from Linyanti to Kasane. 4X4 Botswana. Travel guide.
Leaving Linyanti for our next stop, the Chobe Riverfront area, it is advisable to make use of the cutline that borders the park.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Botswana:
Follow the river in a north-easterly direction, past the Savute turnoff, for about 5km - turn right into the cutline and follow this for approximately 40 km where you will join the main Savute - Kavimba road.
By making use of this cutline, you not only cut down on distance, but the condition of the road is far better.
Leaving the Reserve temporally, we travel through the Chobe Forest Reserve. This 40 km stretch of road can be extremely sandy and a 4 x 4 is essential. After good rains, most part of this narrow road fills up with water that gives the impression that you are driving through a river.
Because good or bad is relative, it is difficult to classify the condition of the roads in the wild. Once again it must be stressed that with a positive attitude, common sense, a spirit of adventure and a sound equipped vehicle, you could tackle any road in Botswana. The golden rule - always be prepared, and don't panic.
As we enter Katchekau - where reasonably well stocked shops and liquor stores can be found - but no fuel - a good gravel road which could become badly corrugated, awaits us.
This is a good time to stop and unwind with a cold drink. Reaching this village you have come to the end of a chapter on your wilderness adventure. You have managed to concur the sometimes inaccessible roads of Moremi and Savuti. You have reached civilization, and very good road conditions awaits you now. Face the corrugation for another 40 km and you will be on tar.
Chobe National Park Safari, Botswana
Days 206 and 207 were spent on a safari in Chobe National Park. Though I had done some smaller safaris, and I had done some multi-day things in West and Central Africa, this was my first real big African safari and it didn't disappoint at all.
Chobe National Park is an absolute wonder in itself, even if there were no animals here at all. The river is incredibly beautiful, and the land has such a wildly varying geography you feel like you're in the lush forest at one moment and then you are in the desert the next.
The safari in Chobe National was unreal, however, and there are animals everywhere. Along the river we saw hundreds of elephants, massive groups of hippos, lots of crocodiles, various birds, and loads of other wildlife. In fact, at one point we saw a massive herd of buffalo crossing the river, it was like a scene out of a wildlife documentary.
We actually spent the night in the heart of Chobe National Park in an unfenced section. I got up early to take some star photos and there was a male lion growling some 400 meters or so away from the camp. It was quite terrifying.
Anyways, Chobe National Park definitely set the standard for the other big wildlife safaris I have planned in Southern Africa before I leave. It really was amazing.

Road from Moremi to Savute Botswana. Travel guide.
The game parks in Botswana are not fenced, so game can roam freely between Chobe and the Moremi.
Self Drive Do it Yourself Botswana:
The area between North Gate, and the Chobe Park Boundary belongs to tour operators with hunting concessions, and game can be frequently seen here. Which means you never leave the wild.
Travelling in an easterly direction alongside the Kwai River for approximately 35 km, one enters Chobe National Park and reach the Maghikwe Sand Ridge.
At times it can be difficult to cross the ridge as the sand is very loose. After rain the sand becomes compacted and going is better. The Magikwe Sand Ridge was once the shoreline of a magnificent inland lake.
Across the Ridge the road forks to the left and we will travel for another 15 km on the hard clayish surface of the Mababe Depression until we reach the Mababe gate.
