Lagoon Safari at Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary
Enjoy the coastal beauty of southern Sri Lanka but among many things to do in Tangalle, is to explore the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary; the oldest on this island. Take a Lagoon Safari and spend some time on a day excursion you will truly cherish. The biodiversity of this birding hotspot makes it a wonderland for avid birdwatchers.
A landscape highlighted by mangroves and bespeckled with over 150 species of endemic and migratory birds – is a treat not to be missed. This day tour will keep you fascinated, as the waters reveal and conceal schools of fish numbering over 40 species – besides the reptiles and mammals who also inhabit the Park. The local fishing community will come into sight as you move on your boat safari; it’s your call to stop and take in local, traditional ways of fishing and watch the interactions of these people.
Should you like to take a break from the Lagoon Safari and birding, you can step off for a short forest trail which leads to some ruins dating back centuries. You may catch sight of regal peacocks and curious monkeys and, if lucky, quiet porcupines, whilst on the trail. No doubt, the Kalametiya Birding Safari offers you a colourful array of avifauna surrounded by their melodious calls, whilst you adventure upon canoes in the lapping waters of the lagoon. Book your Kalametiya Lagoon Safari now… why not?

Aerial View Of Kalametiya
Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is a broad picturesque area of wetland composed of rich lagoons, mangrove swamps, grasslands and patches of scrub jungle with the Indian Ocean at the edge. It is an ideal location for undisturbed bird-watching as it is an important site for winter migrants like the Asian Openbill, Eurasian Spoonbill, Greater Flamingo, Black Capped Purple Kingfisher, Egrets, Purple Swamp Hen and Black-winged Stilt who can be seen wading in the shallow marshes.
Kalametiya also provides an important refuge (one of the few remaining on the southern coastal strip) for the smaller mammals of Sri Lanka such as the Grey Mongoose, Grizzled Indian Squirrel and Hanuman Langur

Introduction
Coco Tangalla is a much-loved six-room colonial villa in Tangalle perched on a small rise directly overlooking the Indian Ocean. This simple yet highly appealing property is managed by the owner of Kandy House and The Last House, both highly-regarded. The Main House and an adjoining annex lie at the highest point of the property, with the infinity swimming pool and gardens at lower levels. Interiors are decorated with respect to its history with a mixture of modern furniture and Dutch-period antiques, local art, and subtle infusions of colour. Coco Tangalla can be booked by the room or as a whole and can accommodate up to 12 guests. Coco Tangalla welcomes children eight years and over.
Accommodation
There are six individually-designed bedrooms, all with a/c. The Main House consists of three doubles and one twin room, whilst the adjacent annex houses the other two rooms. These rooms can interconnect if required. The larger of the two bedrooms in the annex opens on to a private veranda with sea views, and the second is a twin room with a spacious, partly outdoor bathroom. All bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms with h/w showers.
Facilities
Living and dining areas are furnished with comfortable sofas and have an informal feel and a terrace with spectacular sea views. Excellent meals are served in an atmospheric open-sided garden pavilion which overlooks the sea. Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, Chinese and western cuisine is served, prepared with fresh seafood purchased daily from the local fisherman and vegetables from the local market. The swimming pool has wonderful views across Tangalle Bay. The sea in front of the villa is not suitable for swimming, but just 4km away is Seenimodara (Sugar Bay), ideal for swimming during the season (December to April). Other villa facilities include: Wi-Fi, computer and printer, selection of CDs and books, DVD player, board games and relaxing massages (with prior notice). Guests at Coco Tangalla are welcome to spend a morning at their sister property, The Last House, which is 10 minutes away in Tangalle bay. The turquoise seas fronting The Last House are ideal for swimming and snorkelling during the season.
