Prambanan is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia, and one of the biggest in Southeast Asia. The temple structures have distinctive pointed architecture with the tallest being the Shiva shrine at 47 meters high.
If visiting Prambanan make sure you spend some time at Candi Sewu. It is in the same complex and is just 800 meters from Prambanan Temple. The buses will only stop at the Sewu temple for just 10 minutes before heading back to Prambanan. Don’t make the same mistake we nearly did and get back on the bus straight away. As soon as the bus started heading back we immediately regretted leaving. We decided it would be a huge mistake not to explore the temple, so we did a full circle and came straight back. We were so glad we did. Exploring Candi Sewu was a highlight for us and it really had that feeling that it was part of a ruin with most of the surrounding smaller temples still yet to be reconstructed. And the biggest thing of all was we couldn’t believe we were pretty much the only ones there.
Candi Sewu is actually a buddhist temple. Not Hindu. It was originally built in the 8th century before both Prambanan and Borobudur.
We were also very happy with our driver Yudi from Yogyakarta Driver. We highly recommend using their services if you are in Yogyakarta.

Prambanan Temple, Java, Indonesia. The Prambanan temple is the largest Hindu temple of ancient Java, and the first building was completed in the mid-9th century. It was likely started by Rakai Pikatan as the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty's answer to the Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty's Borobudur and Sewu temples nearby. Historians suggest that the construction of Prambanan probably was meant to mark the return of the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty to power in Central Java after almost a century of Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty domination. The large, carved stone towers of the Prambanan Temples look like miniature mountains dotting the landscape.
These old Hindu holy places can be found in the countryside outside of Yogykarta city in Indonesia.

This large compound was built in the ninth century, although it was abandoned not long after this.
The countryside surrounding the Prambanan Temples is lush, green and very scenic as a backdrop for the tall buildings.
