Hiking to Kalaupapa National Historic Park-- Molokai, Hawaii
For more on this beautiful and historic adventure, check out my blog post!
This hike has both beauty and history as you descend over 2,000 feet through a series of switchbacks in order to reach Kalaupapa, home to a preserved lepur colony. The hike is mostly in the trees, but you will get beautiful glimpses of the coastline as you can hear the waves crashing against the shore. The highlight of the hike is when you finally reach sea level and you are rewarded with views of a beautiful beach right up against Molokai's massive sea cliffs. Enjoy your time down here and the sobering tour of the historic Kalaupapa... the hike back up isn't quite as enjoyable.

Hawaii Insider - Kalaupapa (Molokai)

Tour of Kalaupapa NHP on Molokai Island (Part 3): Judd Park, Abandoned Village of Kalawao
I’m on a group tour of Kalaupapa National Historical Park on Molokai Island, Hawaii. Our lunch break is coming to an end at Judd Park in the abandoned village of Kalawao on the east side of Kalaupapa Peninsula. There are some beautiful views of the seacliffs and a couple offshore islets. Molokai has some of the tallest seacliffs in the world. Pretty spectacular.
I walk to the ruins of the U.S. Leprosy Investigation Station that was built in 1909. Was quite a large facility but researchers had a hard time getting volunteers to go into years of isolation for medical investigation, so it ended up being a white elephant. Research failed in this remote location and the federal hospital closed in 1913 after only four years in operation.

Travel Vdeo Guide To: Molokai, Hawaii
As with all the Hawaiian Islands, Molokai is known for its unspoiled natural beauty. A quiet and idyllic spot, this is one island where you can go to escape the turmoil of everyday life. Try visiting the tranquil town of Kaunakakai to see a village that has remained practically unchanged since the early twentieth century. Molokai is also the backdrop for a famous mule ride through the Kalaupapa Peninsula. Lasting almost three miles, the mule ride is one of the few ways to actually reach the Kalaupapa National Historic Park.
Meet the Island of Molokai
With stunning coastlines and wilderness, the natural beauty of the island of Molokai is unspoiled. Known as the Friendly Isle, Molokai is insulated from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and is an idyllic island.
Kaunakakai
Kaunakakai on Molokai is a quiet town that remains as it was in the early twentieth century. Shops and businesses line the streets business district. Kanemitsu’s Bakery is a must-see stop, and is often packed with tourists and locals waiting for their fresh loaf of bread.
The Kalaupapa Peninsula
One of Molokai’s most notable spots is Kalaupapa Peninsula, which is home to a National Historical Park of the same name. The only ways to reach the park are by hiking, by air or via a mule ride that lasts almost three miles. This isolated area is a tranquil one that was once used primarily as a leper colony.
Stunning Sea Cliffs
Sea cliffs which overlook the Pacific Ocean on the island’s North Shore are the world’s tallest sea cliffs, and hold that place in the Guinness Book of World Records. And don’t forget the Kalaupapa Lookout, which is just one place to take in the spectacular views.
Phallic Rock
Kaule o Nanahoa, better known as Phallic Rock, is a rock formation found near the Kalaupapa lookout. Steeped in Hawaiian legend, the stone is a symbol of fertility, and women often prayed to it to heal their infertility.
Molokai's Fishponds
Molokai is also famous for its many fishponds. These man-made pools were built using coral and lava rocks and allowed fish to remain inside while ocean water ran in and out. They are still visible today, 700-800 years after they were first built.
Leprosy | Forced Isolation | Kalaupapa National Historical Park
This National Park unit in Hawaii on Molokai preserves site and history of a former leprosy colony that opened here about 1866. Leper colony location chosen due to inaccessibility --- it is surrounded by nearly impassable cliffs. Half the fun is getting here either by cliff mule ride or airplane. There is also evidence of ancient and hisitoric occupation as well as spectacular sea cliffs, narrow valleys, a volcanie crater, a rain forest, lava tubes, caves and offshore islands.

A quick trip to Kalaupapa
Flew on Makani Kai to Molokai as we toured on the the Historical Tour in Kalaupapa. Our Tour Guide was the sweetest old man named Norman.
From Wiki
Kalaupapa[2] is a small unincorporated community on the island of Molokaʻi, within Kalawao County in the U.S. state of Hawaii. In 1866, during the reign of Kamehameha V, the Hawaii legislature passed a law that resulted in the designation of Molokaʻi as the site for a leper colony, where seriously affected patients could be quarantined, to prevent them from infecting others.[3] At the time, the disease was little understood: it was believed to be highly contagious and incurable. The communities where persons with leprosy lived and were treated were under the administration of the Board of Health, which appointed superintendents on the island.
Kalaupapa is located on the Kalaupapa Peninsula at the base of some of the highest sea cliffs in the world; they rise 2,000 feet (610 m) above the Pacific Ocean. In the 1870s a community to support the leper colony was established here; the legislature required people with severe cases to be quarantined on this island in the hope of preventing contagious transmission of the disease. The area has been preserved as the Kalaupapa Leprosy Settlement and National Historical Park, which takes in the entire county.
The great hihiwai migration
These hihiwai spat (young snails) were found migrating upstream in a group. They entered the stream mouth at Kalaupapa National Historical Park from the ocean and will climb up the steep, fast-flowing stream until they reach a spot where they will spend their adulthood.
