Kalemegdan Park and Belgrade Fortress, Walking Tour (Belgrade, Serbia)
Enable English subtitle ! - Activați subtitrarea în românește !
The video shows a very short, fast (and incomplete ...) tour of Belgrade's most important tourist destination, visited annually by over 2 million tourists. It is the Belgrade Fortress and the neighboring park, Kalemegdan Park (the battlefield of the fortress, in Turkish), whose name, curiously, has reversed on the fortress name (Kalemegdan Fortress). The history of the fortification goes down deep in history, being amazingly complex and with many situation reversals, impossible to present in a few words. From antiquity to the 20th century, the fortress underwent many sieges, passed successively through many masters, through many destructions, renovations, extensions and modernizations, at the same time witnessing the formation and victory of the Serbian people.

A video of my visit to Kalemegdan Fortress in Belgrade, Serbia.
Standing tall over the confluence of the Danube and Sava Rivers the Kalemegdan Fortress has defended the city of Belgrade for hundreds of years. Defensive fortifications have stood in the same place since the 2nd century, when the Romans built a fort to defend the strategically important area that overlooks the plains surrounding the city.
During the Austro-Turkish War and the time when the Austro-Hungarian Empire sought to take over the European Continent, the Kalemegdan Fortress was said to be one of most powerful defensive fortifications in all of Europe.
Today, the Kalemegdan Fortress is a beautiful park and open-air museum in central Belgrade.

Belgrade Fortress is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade. For centuries the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, and thus the history of the fortress, until most recent times, equals the history of Belgrade itself (see: Timeline of Belgrade history). The first mention of the city is when it was founded in the 3rd century BC as Singidunum by the Celtic tribe of Scordisci, who had defeated Thracian and Dacian tribes that previously lived in and around the fort. The city-fortress was later conquered by the Romans, was known as Singidunum and became a part of the military frontier, where the Roman Empire bordered barbarian Central Europe. Singidunum was defended by the Roman legion IV Flaviae, which built a fortified camp on a hill at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava rivers. In the period between AD 378 and 441 the Roman camp was repeatedly destroyed in the invasions by the Goths and the Huns. Legend says that Attila's grave lies at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube (under the fortress). In 476 Belgrade again became the borderline between the empires: the Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), and the Slav-Avar State in the north.

Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park in Stari Grad
The historical landscape of the old citadel of Belgrade Fortress in Kalemegdan Park is a real history adventure. Stari Grad in Serbia is known for its night life, great food and shopping; but, having an incredible well-preserved fortress and zoo within walking distance from other major attractions, is extremely rare. Even the River Sava and Danube are all within reach of this major European city.

Kalemegdan Park, Belgrade
Kalemegdan Park is the largest park and the most important historical monument in Belgrade. It is located on a 125-metre-high (410 ft) cliff, at the junction of the River Sava and the Danube. Its name is formed from the two Turkish words: Kale (meaning fortress) and archaic word of Turkish origin megdan (meaning battlefield).
Kalemegdan Park, split in two as the Large and Little Parks, was developed in the area that once was the town field. It provides places of rest and entertainment. Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park together represent a cultural monument of exceptional importance, the area where various sport, cultural and arts events take place, for all generations of Belgraders and numerous visitors of the city.

Belgrade Fortress by night - part 2 / Beogradska tvrđava - Kalemegdan
Belgrade Fortress consists of the old citadel (Upper and Lower Town) and Kalemegdan Park (Large and Little Kalemegdan) on the confluence of the River Sava and Danube, in an urban area of modern Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. It is located in Belgrade's municipality of Stari Grad. Belgrade Fortress was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1979, and is protected by the Republic of Serbia. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Belgrade, with Skadarlija being the second. Since the admission is free, it is estimated that the total number of visitors (foreign, domestic, citizens of Belgrade) is over 2 million yearly.Belgrade Fortress is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade. For centuries, the city population was concentrated only within the walls of the fortress, and thus the history of the fortress, until most recent times, reflects the history of Belgrade itself (see: Timeline of Belgrade history). 8 Forts @ Danube in Serbia - Kalemegdan Fortress.
About 115 battles, have been fought over imposing, impressive Belgrade Kalemegdan Fortress. The citadel was destroyed more than 40 times throughout the centuries.
It was build in the 1st century as a palisade with earth walls around her, and developed over the years into the Roman stronghold in 2nd century, than into the Byzantine kastel in 6th and 7th century. After that, becomes medieval Capital of Serbia in 13th and 15th century, and finally an Austrian and Ottoman artillery fortification in 17th and 18th century. The Fortress makes a unique cultural and historical complex within Kalemegdan park.
Many mysteries, legends and facts are written in the walls of this remarkable place, and some of the biggest are definitely about Nebojsa tower and Roman well.
Nebojsa tower is the only surviving mediaeval tower of the Belgrade Fortress. The name, Nebojsa, means fearless in Serbian. Tower was built in the early 15th century, during the reign of despot Stefan Lazarevic. It was billed as a part of the defense system which was protecting Belgrade from the Ottoman invasion after the Siege of Belgrade in 1456.
The well was built in the period from 1717 to 1731, during the Austrian Baroque reconstruction of the fortress. This building is designated and called “The Large Well”. Name “Roman well” was first recorded in the nineteenth century, and was based on folk tales about all old buildings, whose origins are forgotten, often were attributed to the Romans.
Also, at Kalemegdan Fortress you will find Military museum. This museum is the most accurate witness of changes in history at this part of Balkans and wider. The museum has over 3,000 ancient and modern items which include everything from Roman swords and helmets to items of modern war history.
There are also two churches inside the fortress – Ruzica Church, and the Chapel of Sveta Petka which you can visit, just make sure you are dressed appropriately to enter the churches.
In the upper part of Kalelegdan Fortress you will find a symbol of our capital – the Victor monument. Bronze, male figure of 14 meters, stands and looks across the river. Statue was made in 1913. by our famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
Whether you just want to take a leisurely walk, go for jog, sit on a park bench and watch people go by, lay under a tree and read a book, just take in the fresh air, and enjoy in park land Kalemegdan. It is visited by thousands of tourists every year, and is open all day and night all year round.
