How to go to Mustang
Mustang the district beyond the mountains! Lying to the North of Annapurna region, Mustang lies in the Trans-Himalyan zone, near to the Tibetan border on the Northern side. The rugged terrains and mountains looming over the valleys below carved by the ferocious Kali-Gandaki River, Mustang is one of the most famous trekking destinations in Nepal. Not only is Mustang famous among the foreigners, but Mustang is also famous among the Hindu Pilgrims. Thousands of hindu devotes from Nepal and India visit the Muktinath shrine every year, and the banks of Kaligandaki river in a famous place called Kagbeni. Kagbeni is also the gateway to Upper Mustang, once a forbidden Kingdom ‘the Kingdom of Lho’.
Lying to the western end of Manang district, Mustang is a major part of the world renowned Annapurna circuit. The shorter version the circuit usually terminates in Jomsom, the headquarters of Mustang. Also known as the Windy city, as per its high velocity winds.
How to get there (Mustang/Muktinath)?
Mustang, Muktinath reason is one of the very easily accessible trekking destination. You can reach the footsteps of Muktinath temples in a comfort of a four-wheeler or a little less comfort but enough adventure on your two-wheeler. Yet, you cannot take your own four-wheeler into Mustang, but you can take it up-to Beni, and from there you can take Jeeps or Bus to Muktinath. Beni is about 300 km from Kathmandu. Buses and Micro buses are available from Gongabu Bus Park which costs about 800 Rupees.
From Beni, you can take a local bus to Jomsom that leaves at specific time period, or you can take buses and jeep to Ghasa, from where you have to change the bus and then take another one to Jomsom. From Jomsom you have to change another bus. The tentative fares from Beni-Jomsom are listed below.
Beni to Ghasa- 390 Nrs
Ghasa to Jomsom- 410 Nrs
Jomsom to Muktinath – 300 Nrs
Jomsom is about 72 km from Beni and Muktinath is around 21 km from which make it a total of about 93 km of trip from Beni to Muktinath, which usually takes all day long because of the state of road and also the occupancy of bus seats.
The routes along the way have ample hotels, especially around Jomsom and Muktinath, there are plenty of good hotels.

The cost mostly depends on how one spends, but on a budget around 8000 should be enough for a trip and back.

Mustang -
Mustang (from the Tibetan möntang (Wylie: smon-thang), Nepali: मुस्तांग Mustāṃg fertile plain), formerly Kingdom of Lo, is a remote and isolated region of the Nepalese Himalayas. The Upper Mustang was a restricted demilitarized area until 1992 which makes it one of the most preserved regions in the world, with a majority of the population still speaking traditional Tibetic languages. Tibetan culture has been preserved by the relative isolation of the region from the outside world.
The Upper Mustang comprise the northern two-thirds of Mustang District of Dhawalagiri Zone, Nepal. The southern third of the district is called Thak and is the homeland of the Thakali, who speak the Thakali language, and whose culture combines Tibetan and Nepalese elements. Life in Mustang revolves around tourism, animal husbandry and trade.
Mustang's status as a kingdom ended in 2008 when its suzerain Kingdom of Nepal became a republic. The influence of the outside world, especially China, is growing and contributing to rapid change in the lives of Mustang's people.
Climate
Upper Mustang has a transhimalayan climate which is cool and semi-arid with precipitation in the range of 250–400 mm. It is in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
Demographics
The population of the whole Mustang District in 2001 was 14,981, spread between three towns and approximately thirty smaller settlements. The inhabitants are either Thakalis, Gurung or, in traditional Mustang, primarily Tibetan.
Most of the population of Mustang lives near the Kali Gandaki River, 2800–3900 m above sea level. The tough conditions cause a large winter migration into lower regions of Nepal. The administrative centre of Mustang District is at Jomsom (eight kilometers south of Kagbeni) which has had an airport since 1962 and has become the main tourist entry point since Mustang was opened to western tourism in 1992.
Geography
The main hydrographic feature of Mustang is the Gandaki River. The river runs southward towards Nepal Terai, bisecting Mustang. Routes paralleling the river once served as a major trade route between Tibet and India, especially for salt. Part of the river valley in the southern Mustang District forms the Kali Gandaki Gorge, by some measures the deepest gorge in the world.
Traditional Mustang (the Lo Kingdom) is 53 km north–south at its longest, 60 km east–west at its widest and ranges from a low point of 2,750 m above sea level on the Kali Gandaki River just north of Kagbeni to 6,700 m at Khamjung Himal, a peak in southeast Mustang.
History
Raja Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista.
Mustang was once an independent kingdom, although closely tied by language and culture to Tibet. From the 15th century to the 17th century, its strategic location granted Mustang control over the trade between the Himalayas and India. At the end of the 18th century the kingdom was annexed by Nepal and became a dependency of the Kingdom of Nepal since 1795 [4]
Though still recognized by many Mustang residents, the monarchy ceased to exist on October 7, 2008, by order of the Government of Nepal.[5] The last official and later unofficial king (raja or gyelpo) was Jigme Dorje Palbar Bista (1930–2016),[6] who traced his lineage directly back to Ame Pal, the warrior who founded this Buddhist kingdom in 1380.[7] Ame Pal oversaw the founding and building of much of the Lo and Mustang capital of Lo Manthang, a walled city surprisingly little changed in appearance from that time period.[8]
In 2007, a shepherd in Mustang discovered a collection of 55 cave paintings depicting the life of the Buddha.[9]
Transport
Upper Mustang is on an ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet exploiting the lowest 4,660 metres (15,300 ft) pass Kora La through the Himalaya west of Sikkim. This route remained in use until China's annexation of Tibet in 1950.
Mechanized access inside Nepal began with the opening of an airstrip at Jomsom at the approximate boundary between the southern Thak and northern Lo sections of the valley, which was in operation by the 1960s.

The Kingdom of Mustang, bordering the Tibetan plateau, is one of the most remote and isolated region of Nepalese Himalaya. Once an independent Buddhist kingdom, Mustang was annexed by Nepal at the end of the 18th century, but retained its status as a separate principality until the 1950's when the area was more closely consolidated into Nepal. Because of its sensitive border location, Mustang was off-limits to foreigners until 1992. The relative isolation of the region from the outside world has helped Mustang preserve its ancient culture which is more closely tied to Tibet than to Nepal.
The landscape is also unlike anything that is to be found anywhere else in Nepal —deep gorges carved by the Kali Gandaki River, and strangely sculptured rock formations. The cliffs’ face are pitted with an estimated 10,000 ancient cave dwellings, some of which are perched more than 150 feet above the valley floor. No one knows who dug them, or how people even scaled the near vertical rock face to access them. Some of the caves appear almost impossible to reach even to experienced climbers.
Most of the caves are now empty, but others show signs of domestic habitation —hearths, grain-storage bins, and sleeping spaces. Some caves were apparently used as burial chambers. The several dozen bodies that were found in these caves were all more than 2,000 years old. They lay on wooden beds and decorated with copper jewelry and glass beads.
In other caves, skeletons dating from the 3rd to the 8th centuries, before Buddhism came to Mustang, had cut marks on the bones that may have been inflicted during the practice of sky burial, where the body’s flesh is sliced into small pieces and left to be eaten by vultures. Sky burial is still practiced in many remote regions in the Himalaya.
Archeologists believe that the caves in Mustang were used in three general periods. They were first used some 3,000 years ago as burial chambers. Then around 1,000 years ago, they became primarily living quarters, perhaps to escape battles and intruders into the valley. Finally, by the 1400s, most people had moved into traditional villages and the caves became places of meditation. Some of these caves were turned into monasteries such as the Luri Gompa, the Chungsi Cave monastery and the Nyiphuk Cave Monastery, all of which were built around and inside the caves.
Luri Gompa is one of the most famous in Mustang. The monastery is set on a ledge, at least a hundred meter high from the ground, in one of the many natural pillar like sandstone structures. A winding footpath climbs all the way from the bottom of the valley to a single entrance door that leads into two interconnecting chambers. The outer chamber contains a shrine, while the inner chamber —the main treasure of Luri Gompa— is beautifully decorated with a series of paintings depicting Indian Mahasiddhas — saints who were said to have achieved siddhi, or extraordinary powers by meditation. No documentation pertaining to this mysterious gompa or monastery has been found, but the wall paintings appear to be have been made in the 14th century or even earlier.

#video_credit_goes_to_Narbhu
Mustang Caves or Sky Caves of Nepal are a collection of some 10,000 man-made caves dug into the sides of valleys in the Mustang District of Nepal.[1][2] Several groups of archaeologists and researchers have explored these stacked caves and found partially mummified human bodies and skeletons that are at least 2,000–3,000 years old.[3] Explorations of these caves by conservators and archaeologists have also led to the discovery of valuable Buddhist paintings, sculptures, manuscripts and numerous artifacts belonging to the 12th to 14th century.[4][5] The caves lie on the steep valley walls near the Kali Gandaki River in Upper Mustang. Research groups have continued to investigate these caves, but no one has yet understood who built the caves and why were they built.

Tiji Festival In Mustang Nepal
The Tiji Festival of ancient city Lo Manthag is the highlight of this trip. Thousands of men, women and children participate in this annual elaborate re-enactment of the Tiji myth, telling of a deity named Dorje Jon who battles his demon father to save the kingdom from destruction. It will be our unique privilege to witness the same color, costume, dancing and ritual that were displayed by these people in this place more than six hundred years ago according to the religious mythology.
Visit Himalaya treks have been organizing Mustang Tiji festival trip every year. Mustang is an ancient Himalayan Kingdom which lies in the northern central part of Nepal and at the top of the Kaligandaki River. Upper Mustang consists of two distinct regions: the southern part and the northern where the languages, culture and traditions are alike to those of the Tibetan people. Mustang's culture has descended in its pure form from the Red Hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism (contrasting to the Yellow Hat sect to where it is believed that the Dalai Lama belongs.) As well as it remains one of the only spots on earth where Tibetans live according to their own unimpeded traditions. The trail leads us towards the stunning sculpted rock formations backed by snow-capped peaks. We will visit homes, villages and active monasteries, and the welcome of locals will be warm.

Jomsom Mustang District, Nepal. It extends over both the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. Along the banks of Kali Gandaki river, black rocks or stones called shaligram in the Hindu culture can be found, which locals see as the form of God Vishnu. This type of stone is only found in this Kali Gandaki River but people are unknown about it so, it is holy to the Hindus. The soaring peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri form a backdrop. A company of the Nepalese Army is stationed here. Nearby is Jomsom Airport from where there are regular flights.
Geography
A trail passes through the Lower Mustang region of Nepal, ending at the village of Kagbeni, a Tibetan influenced village filled with prayer wheels, chortens and a Buddhist monastery. The trail follows the Kali Gandaki River which forms the deepest ravine in the world; on one side lies the Annapurna mountain range and on the other side is Dhaulagiri. Between the two ranges, there are views of 8 of the 20 highest mountains in the world. The Kali Gandaki is a quarter of a mile wide river bed; during the winter the river will be frozen, but during the summer and monsoon it fills with rain water and melting snow. The scenery of the trail ranges from forests of bright Rhododendrons to rocky cliffs and desert. The culture along the track is a rich Combination of Hindu and Tibetan Buddhism. The trail's highest point is Muktinath at 3800 m, a holy site of temples sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus for centuries.

The deep valleys and high mountains encircling the giant Annapurna Himal embrace a wide range of peoples and terrain, from subtropical jungle to a high, dry landscape resembling the Tibetan Plateau. The Annapurna region is the most popular trekking area in Nepal with plenty of trekking places, attracting over 75% of all trekkers (more than 30,000 annually). It's also among the tamest areas, with excellent lodges lining the main routes.
