The Kalka–Shimla railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow-gauge railway in North India which traverses a mostly-mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages. The railway was built under the direction of Herbert Septimus Harington between 1898 and 1903 to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the rest of the Indian rail system.
Its early locomotives were manufactured by Sharp, Stewart and Company. Larger locomotives were introduced, which were manufactured by the Hunslet Engine Company. Diesel and diesel-hydraulic locomotives began operation in 1955 and 1970, respectively.
On 8 July 2008, UNESCO added the Kalka–Shimla railway to the mountain railways of India World Heritage Site.
The track has 20 picturesque stations, 103 tunnels, 912 curves, 969 bridges and 3% slope (1:33 gradient). Characters featured include Maqsood, a refugee and a porter from Kashmir, and John Whitmarsh-Knight, a teacher looking for a home. Sanjay the station master is hoping for promotion and his boss Bataljit is waiting for a transfer, but everybody is waiting for the snow.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages. The Kalka–Shimla Railway was built in 1898. to connect Shimla, the summer capital of India during the British Raj, with the rest of the Indian rail system. At the time of construction 107 tunnels and 864 bridges, were built throughout the course of the track. The Chief Engineer of the project was H.S. Herlington.
Shimla (Hindi: शिमला; English pronunciation: /ˈʃɪmlə/; Hindi: [ˈʃɪmlaː] ( listen)), written in British Indian records as Simla, is the capital and largest city of the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Shimla is also a district which is bounded by Mandi and Kullu in the north, Kinnaur in the east, the state of Uttarakhand in the south-east, and Solan and Sirmaur. In 1864, Shimla was declared as the summer capital of British India, succeeding Murree, northeast of Rawalpindi. After independence, the city became the capital of Punjab and was later named the capital of Himachal Pradesh. It is the principal commercial, cultural and educational centre of the hilly regions of the state.
The climatic conditions attracted the British to establish the city in the dense forests of Himalayas. As the summer capital, Shimla hosted many important political meetings including the Simla Accord of 1914 and the Simla Conference of 1945. After independence, the state of Himachal Pradesh came into being in 1948 as a result of integration of 28 princely states. Even after independence, the city remained an important political centre, hosting the Simla Agreement of 1972. After the reorganisation, the Mahasu district and its major portion were merged with Shimla. Its name is derived from the goddess Shyamala Devi, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali[citation needed]. As of 2011 Shimla comprises 19 hill states, namely Baghal, Baghat, Balsan, Bashahr, Bhajji, Bija, Darkoti, Dhami, Jubbal, Keonthal, Kumharsain, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mahlog, Mangal, Nalagarh (Hindur), Sangri and Tharoch.
Shimla is home to a number of buildings that are styled in the Tudorbethan and neo-Gothic architectures dating from the colonial era, as well as multiple temples and churches. The colonial architecture and churches, the temples and the natural beauty of the city attract a large number of tourists. The major attractions include the Viceroy Lodge, the Christ Church, the Jakhoo Temple, the Mall Road and the Ridge, which together form the city centre. The Kalka–Shimla Railway line built by the British, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a major tourist attraction. Owing to its steep terrain, Shimla hosts the mountain biking race MTB Himalaya, which started in 2005 and is regarded as the biggest event of its kind in South Asia. Shimla also has the largest natural ice skating rink in South Asia. The ice skating season usually begins in the start of December and goes on till the end of February. Apart from being a tourism centre, the city is also an educational hub with a number of colleges and research institutions. The city also has sporting venues like the Indira Gandhi Rajya Khel Parisar, the main sports complex and the Naldehra Golf Club.
The Mall: The Mall is the main shopping street of Shimla. It also has many restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, post offices and tourist offices. The Gaiety Theatre is also situated there.
Christ Church: Situated on the Ridge, Christ Church is the second oldest church in Northern India.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway (Documentary in HD) | Toy Trains – Part I
This route isn’t one that shies away from extremes: the train from Kalka-Shimla weaves up through the Himalayan foothills for 96.5km. Traversing spectacular mountain landscape, the route climbs to over 1.5km above sea level, passing through 103 tunnels, crossing 864 bridges and turning 919 times.
Only the journey time isn’t record-breaking: the Kalka-Shimla’s travel is about six hours long. Nevertheless - or perhaps precisely because of it - locals enjoy the journey as much as the tourists who came to discover the north of India.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway was verified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008.
The Kalka-Shimla Railway, the Kangra-Valley Railway and the Matheran-Hill Railway form a network of narrow gauge railways in India that are lovingly called „toy trains“.
These trains travel on narrow gauges over hundreds of breathtaking bridges in curves and tunnels that slowly meander through the captivating Himalayan countryside.
With beautiful and powerful high-definition imagery (1080p), renowned ARD filmmaker Peter Weinert takes railway fans and enthusiasts of exciting travel documentaries on a journey into an extraordinary world.

Going to Shimla Railway Station in Complete Snow by Walking on Rly. Tracks [4K]
Going to Shimla by Train is Adventurous, and it becomes more adventurous when Train stops at a halt and Driver says to everyone that train will not go ahead until the further track is cleared. (Because of heavy Snowfall the last night)
This is what happened to me , The train stopped at Taradevi Rly. Sta. and everyone was trying to reach Shimla as early as possible; after sitting at the station for about half an hour, finally I asked the Station master whether the train will go further. He told that it would go but after 4-5 hours. And also told that we could go there by bus, but there would be heavy Traffic Jam, and if we wanted then we could go there by the Tracks (~9 kms up Gradient from Taradevi). So me and my brother decided to go by Tracks. Ending of the video was quick as One Mobile Phone's battery was dead and the other had only about 10-15%. So I saved that to shoot this video that's why I could not record on the whole way.
Lastly that train also arrived at Shimla by a delay of about 5:30 hrs.

Shimla Kalka UNESCO Toy Train - Indian Railways in 4K
Shimla, Toy Train, India: The 4K video captures the major attraction in Shimla - Kalka-Shimla UNESCO Heritage Railway. The route is famous for its scenery and improbable construction. Originally 107 tunnels were built on Kalka Shimla Railway Track and 102 remain in use. The longest tunnel is at Barog. The line has 864 bridges.Steam operation of regular trains ended 1971.
The Kalka–Shimla Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railway in North-West India travelling along a mostly mountainous route from Kalka to Shimla. It is known for dramatic views of the hills and surrounding villages.
Shimla (then spelt Simla) was settled by the British shortly after the first Anglo-Gurkha war, and is located at 7,116 feet (2,169 m) in the foothills of the Himalayas. By the 1830s, Shimla had already developed as a major base for the British. It became the summer capital of British India in 1864, and was also the headquarters of the British army in India.
This route passes through a city named Solan, which is also known as mini Shimla. A festival celebrating the goddess Shoolini Devi, after which the city is named, is held each summer in June.
The route winds from the Himalayan Sivalik foothills at Kalka to several important points such as Dharampur, Solan, Kandaghat, Taradevi, Barog, Salogra, Totu (Jutogh), Summerhill and Shimla at an altitude of 2,076 meters (6,811 ft)
India - Steam on the Kalka - Shimla Line, 2006
Here's the next in my long awaited conversions of old tapes. This sequence shows the action (or lack of it) during a visit to the Kalka - Shimla Line in the Indian Himalayan foothills. All services on the line now are diesel operated but they use the British built 2-6-2 tank number 520 for tourist services on the upper part of the line, the last few miles to Shimla.
Here we see the tank being prepared for the Hill Puffer special and making the journey up to Shimla, almost 2000 metres above sea level. The short train is aided at the rear by one of the railway's fleet of Indian built diesel hydraulics (number 186).
The action was recorded hand held and on occasions in windy conditions. Also, it's taken from 12 year old tapes. I apologise for quality issues.

Herlington.
The locomotives used during the earlier period were manufactured by Sharp, Stewart and Company, and larger locomotives were introduced which were manufactured by Hunslet Engine Company. The diesel and diesel-hydraulic locomotives were started operation in 1955 and 1970 respectively. The railway was declared a heritage by the Himachal Pradesh government in 2007, and in 2008 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongwith the other Mountain Railways of India.
