Subscribe to Journeyman here:
In the republic of Kalmykia, Russian politics are at their most eccentric - and most sinister. Kalmykia is located in the southwestern part of European Russia: its people are the descendants of a Mongol tribe, who migrated from China four centuries ago, and has suffered decades of suppression. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the republic's President, and a multi-millionaire at 35, has a decorated history in the world of competitive chess, and now is passing on this legacy to the next generation: chess is now compulsory at school, and millions is being invested to make Kalmykia the chess capital of the world. Yet Ilyumzhinov's power is being challenged by journalist Larisa Yudina, who accuses him of high level corruption and embezzlement. She was murdered in mysterious circumstances only months after this film was recorded. Featuring interview with Ilyumzhinov and Yudina, this film provides unique insight into one of Russia's most unique republics, the man behind it.

Kunst en Living Rotterdam, 2010, The Netherlands. Marble Metaphysics
Marble Metaphysics is the project of the Russian sculptor Sergey Khorikov who successfully embodies highest quality in unique works that are risky and challenging from a technical standpoint, painstrikingly executing the most miniature details.
By the means of masterfully carved stone, Sergey attempts to exposure the inner relation of God and Human, combined with overwhelming perfection of the world around. Sergey's marble sculptures reveal deep, sometimes torturous state of human soul, rational approach and wholesome illumination of personality's evolution.
Basing many of his works on numerous sages and ancient Greek myths, Sergey pays careful attention to vivid images carved in stone. Many of the sculptures are unique and have a conceptual meaning. Structurally based in a philosophical scheme they reveal the deepest universal concepts.
The art of Sergey Khorikov could be seen as mythic embryo developing in the skilfully created sphere revealing more and more peculiar details to the observer. To get the most of the sculpture it is of great necessity to observe it from all sides as the details captured by human eye initially, start transformation and develop themselves in boundaries between real and unreal.

SUMMARY
=======
Burkhanism or Ak Jang (Altay: Ак јаҥ) is a new religious movement that flourished among the indigenous people of Russia's Gorno Altai region (okrug) between 1904 and the 1930s. Czarist Russia was suspicious of the movement's potential to stir up native unrest and perhaps involve outside powers. The Soviet authorities ultimately suppressed it for fear of its potential to unify Siberian Turkic peoples under a common nationalism.
Originally millenarian, charismatic and anti-shamanic, the Burkhanist movement gradually lost most of these qualities—becoming increasingly routine, institutionalized (around a hierarchy of oral epic singers), and accommodating itself to the pre-existing Altaian folk religion. It exists today in several revival forms.
On the whole, the Burkhanist movement was shown to be a syncretistic phenomenon combining elements of ancient pre-Shamanist, Shamanist, Lamaist and Orthodox Christian beliefs. According to a Professor of Tomsk State University L. Sherstova, it emerged in response to the needs of a new people - the Altai-kizhi or Altaians who sought to distinguish themselves from the neighboring and related tribes and for whom Burkhanism became a religious form of their ethnic identity.
