Orthodox Christians brave icy waters in Bulgaria
(6 Jan 2019) Thousands of Orthodox Christian worshippers plunged into the icy waters of rivers and lakes across Bulgaria on Sunday to recover crucifixes cast by priests in ceremonies commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ.
Tradition holds that the person who retrieves the wooden cross will be freed from evil spirits and will be healthy throughout the year.
After the cross is fished out, the priest sprinkles the congregation with water using a bunch of basil.
Epiphany is held every year on 6 January and marks the end of 12 days of Christmas.
In the mountain city of Kalofer, in central Bulgaria, dozens of men dressed in white embroidered shirts waded into the icy Tundzha River waving national flags and singing folk songs.
Inspired by the music of drums and bagpipes and by homemade plum brandy, they performed a slow mazhko horo, or men's dance, stomping on the rocky riverbed.
Led by the town's mayor, the men danced for nearly half an hour, up to their waists in the cold water, pushing away chunks of ice floating on the river.
The town of Kalofer has applied to the UN cultural agency, UNESCO, for this traditional ritual to be inscribed as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Bulgaria: Worshippers take mass Epiphany dip in icy Tundzha River
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Dozens of men donned white embroidered shirts and braved the icy waters of the Tundzha River near the central Bulgarian city of Kalofer on Sunday, to honour the baptism of Jesus.
The all-male Epiphany tradition saw worshippers chain-dancing, waving national flags, and singing traditional Bulgarian songs to the sound of bagpipes and drums in the ice-cold water.
As many as 2,000 people had gathered in Kalofer to observe the starting procession, the traditional 'horo' dance and to receive blessings from a priest who sprinkled them with water.
Traditionally, worshippers are required to embark on a quest to retrieve a wooden crucifix cast in the river by the priest.
Dancers believe the ice-plunge tradition will bring them health during the upcoming year.

STORYLINE
Thousands of young men are plunging into icy rivers and lakes across Bulgaria and Romania to retrieve crucifixes thrown by clergymen in an old ritual marking the Orthodox feast of Epiphany.
By tradition, a wooden cross is cast into the water and it is believed that the person who retrieves it will be freed from evil spirits.
In the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanta, some 3,000 Orthodox Christian believers turned out to watch priests hurl three crosses into the icy sea.
Dozens - some wearing wet suits - dived into the waters to retrieve the crosses.
The large crowd received bottles of blessed holy water after the contest.
The water is blessed during Epiphany and is said to help believers to cope with diseases and difficulties in life.
