It was not easy to get to Riung, but it was very worth it to visit it for two nights. You can hire a boat and have a great day on the water and beaches. The snorkling is great! Not many tourists go there yet, because of the terrible roads.

Flying Foxes (at Kalong Indonesia Komodo National Park)
Kalong Island is keeping a mystery and kept secret by the local people in particular from Labuan Bajo of Flores. According to the local story that no one brave to enter this island since some body had tried to enter it using local boat and not return. Therefore, the island is kept secret with it beautiful natures. Meanwhile, the island presents the beautiful attraction of bat flying around the island. The group of big bats dwelling this island as well as hang on the mangrove plantations. Meanwhile, the park is proud to have this island and captivate the tourist to enjoy the fantastic view of bat flying in the late afternoon. You can discover thousands of bats fling around and leave the island to seek the food at other island within this national park.

At dusk we anchored near the mangroves at Pulau Kalong Island (Flying Fox Island).
Just after the sun went down these flying foxes (literally tens of thousands) flew overhead in their nightly migration to Flores to hunt for food/fruit.
What a phenomenal occurrence. — at Komodo national park, Indonesia.
The wind volume is a bit loud.

One of the more spectacular displays of nature in the area is at Kalong Island (Indonesian: Pulau Kalong; also spelt Kalung), which literally means Flying Fox Island. The name is quite appropriate as the island is home to thousands of Kalong, or giant flying fox bats.

We witnessed thousands of Flying Fox Bats fly from Kalong Island to Rinca Island on our 3-day boat trip exploring Komodo Island. The bats hang out in the mangrove and leave at sunset to eat fruits on Rinca Island.

The Fidgety Explorer: Flying Foxes at Kalong Island, Komodo Islands

The second stop during our trip to Komodo Islands with Sukaberjalan (IG: @sukaberjalan) was to watch thousands of flying foxes bats leaving at sunset to fly to other islands to find food. It was truly magnificent and we are truly blessed for this experience. Alhamdulillaah.

These bats are huge! They have a wingspan of 1-2 meters, or 3-6 feet. I have actually seen a couple of these bats flying at sunset and it was an amazing sight.

The large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus), also known as the greater flying fox, Malaysian flying fox, kalang or kalong, is a southeast Asian species of megabat in the family Pteropodidae.Like the other members of the genus Pteropus, or the Old World fruit bats, it feeds exclusively on fruits, nectar and flowers. It is noted for being one of the largest bats. It, as with all other Old World fruit bats, lacks the ability to echolocate.
