GIRISANCHAR 28
The 28th All India DAE Trekking Expedition has been successfully completed during the month of January 2017. The region of Bhandardara(Shendi)- Ratangad-Samrad-Dehne- Ghatghar- Alang- Udadhawane-Kalsubai-Bari in Ahmednagar & Thane District of Maharashtra State was selected for this expedition. This was a challenging route for the organizers as well as for trekkers. The explored route of Girisanchar-28 was both breathtaking and also had historical importance. The trek was in “Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wild Life sanctuary”. Reaching the towering heights of Sahyadri (Kalsubai the highest peak of sahyadri at 5400ft) and becoming a part of the Sandhan valley trek was an experience beyond comparison. The trek was adventurous & strenuous.
KALSUBAI the Everest of Maharashtra
Kalsubai (Marathi: कळसूबाई शिखर) is a mountain in the Western Ghats, located in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Its summit situated at an elevation of 1646 metres (5400 feet) is the highest point in Maharashtra which earns it the much glorified title of the 'Everest of Maharashtra'.[1]
The mountain range lies within the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. It is visited throughout the year by avid trekkers, Kalsubai temple devotees and wildlife enthusiasts alike. The name kalsu bai has given to the mountain on the woman who used to live in this mountain according to the villagers living at the base of kalsu bai mountain. It is said that a woman name kalsu bai was punished by the villagers and forced to leave the village, that woman climbed this mountain and started living on it and died there. That's how the name of this mountain kalsu bai came.
The peak along with the adjoining hills spans along a downward-slanting east to west axis eventually merging with the formidable escarpment of the western ghats at almost right angles.Along its length they form a natural boundary demarcating the Igatpuri Taluka, Nashik district at its north from the Akole Taluka, Ahmednagar district at its south. The mountain itself lies on the Deccan Plateau with its base at an elevation of 587 meters (1926 feet) above mean sea level.
The mountain along with adjoining hills forms an enormous catchment area for the Arthur Lake which it overlooks.

Amruteshwar Temple is located at the start of the Ratanwadi village in the Igatpuri region. It is considered to be over 1,200 year old temple which features Lord Shiva as the main deity. This temple comes under Ahmednagar District and is surrounded by varied mountain ranges. Ratangad Fort is also located at a close distance from this old Lord Shiva Temple. The Amruteshwar Temple has been constructed in Hemadpanthi architectural style with beautiful rock carvings on the main shrine. Harishchandragad Fort Trek
A Monsoon trek to Harishchandragad Fort, a favorite destination from Mumbai and Pune in monsoons. A part of Kalsubai Harishchandragad wildlife sanctuary.
Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar district of India. Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, kothale village and it has played a major role in guarding and controlling the surrounding region.
Harishchandragad Fort Trek left an indelible mark on my heart at the very first moment my eyes met and feasted on the views from the fort.
