Kalumburu Road
Kalumburu Road - One Rough Road
Touring Australia : Gibb River & Kalumburu roads
Some sections of the Gibb River and Kalumburu roads shot on May 15 2012. There was still a lot of water about following a big wet season. Fording the rivers and floodways all adds to the fun of driving in the outback. We are in a Nissan Patrol 3 litre diesel towing about 1.5 tonnes of van and supplies. The camera is a SONY HDR CX700VE and it is mounted on a tripod. The vehicle may sound like it is falling apart; it's not. The road is bumpy and the car is full of gear. The speed is lower than it appears due to having the lens set to wide.
The KIMBERLEY: trekking across the the Gibb River Road and up the Kalumburu Track
if you have never heard of the Kimberley, the Gibb RIver Road or the Kalumburu track, look no further! Here is a collection of videos from sights along this breathtaking region. the kimberley, and more specifically the Mitchell Plateau (accessible only via an 700km unsealed road + 200km a dirt track), is considered the last frontier of Australia.
one of my favourite parts about this trip is the lack of phone service. im so happy that i have been able to travel this road while it is still like this. being disconnected for 14 days was a blessing.
if you want to see it for yourself i would 100% recommend it! come down under, the waters great!
[[[Full Disclosure: this was filmed in July, in the middle of winter--- while swimming was refreshing, let it be known that ever single body of water in this video was like an ice bath. the kind that slows your heart beat down a few beats upon breaking the surface]]]
music: first track is ...that instrument you hear is a didgeridoo, historically played by the aboriginal peoples of this fine country.
the second track is a remix of Daryl's famous song: Horses, which is pretty much the present-day national anthem of Australia.
The Gibb River Road & Kimberley Pt.2 - Australia The Giant Loop - Episode 32
Series 2 - Australia, The Giant Loop
Episode 32 - The Gibb River Road & Kimberley Region, WA (22/4/19 - 4/5/19)
...
The second video from the Kimberley a region in northern Western Australia, 3 times the size of England and home to the infamous four wheel drive track The Gibb River Road. The region is one of the world's last wilderness frontiers and is full freshwater swimming holes - and freshwater crocodiles, amazing rock formations, aboriginal heritage and art, outback cattle stations and some of the most amazing night skies we will ever see.
Turning north off the Gibb River Road we passed Drysdale Station cross the Drysdale River and head towards Kalumburu, the most northern settlement in Western Australia. Kalumburu was established in 1937 after the original mission 20km north-east at Pago was closed due to water shortages, it is inhabited mostly by Aboriginal people from the Wunambal and Kwini language groups.
First stop on our way up the Kalumburu Road was Theda Station, around 200km drive north of the GRR, where we spent a couple of nights in the dongas. We were lucky enough to go up in the helicopter as they scared the land early in the season to prevent larger fires in later in the year. From the air you get a real feel of the true size of the Kimberly and just how remote we really were. We also took the station dogs out on the quads in search of rock art and swimming holes.
We left the Station for a couple of days and spent a night at the beautiful McGowans sunset beach campground on the north coast. From here we explored some areas surrounding Kalumburu as well as visiting the township, the mission which unfortunately was closed and the Kira Kiro Aboriginal Arts Centre.
In part 3 we will return to the Gibb and continue our journey towards Derby.

Touring Australia :Kalumburu and Mitchell Falls roads
This clip contains sections of the Kalumburu road from the Drysdale River until the Mitchell Falls road gets to the King Edward River. We arrive there as another couple are contemplating the drive through and have just locked the front hubs for the cross. We'll follow them across in my next Touring Australia upload. Of particular note in this clip is the guy doing it by mountain bike. I admire his stamina and determination but I reckon you gotta be just a tiny bit nuts to do the outback on a bike. One snake in the wrong place and its all over. You do see a lot more snakes on a bike than you will ever see in a car. I was an avid cyclist in my younger days, I know from personal experience.
