Tripura : Tripura is a state in northeast India, bordered by Bangladesh, and the Indian states of Assam and Mizoram. Tripura is a landlocked state in North East India, where the seven contiguous states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura – are collectively known as the Seven Sister States.
Udaipur : Udaipur, formerly known as Rangamati, is the third biggest city in Tripura. The city was a former capital of the state during the reign of the Maharajas. This city is famous for the Tripura Sundari temple also known as Tripureswari temple. Udaipur is about 51 km from Agartala, the capital of Tripura.
Tripureshwari Temple (Matabari) : The temple is situated in the ancient city of Udaipur, about 55 km from Agartala. Tripura Sundari temple, which is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, was constructed by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501. There is a big lake beside the temple known as Kalyan Sagar. Popularly known as Matabari, the shrine is set upon a small hillock.
The temple is considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas; legend says that the right leg of Sati fell here. Here, Shakti is worshipped as Tripurasundarī and the accompanying Bhairava is Tripuresh.
Bhubaneswari Temple : The Bhubaneswari Temple has been immortalised by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in his novel ‘Rajarshi’ and drama ‘Bisharjan’. The temple is situated besides the river Gomati and is located close to the old royal palace which lies in ruins today. Mata Tripureswari Temple
This temple is one of the 51 pithasthans in India as per Hindu mythology. As per mythology, Lord Vishnu had cut off the body of Mata Sati into 51 pieces by Sudarshana Chakra and all these pieces fell at different places throughout the country and these places are known as pithasthans. It is said that 'right foot' of Mata Sati fell at Matabari.
This pithasthan is also known as Kurma Pith because the shape of the temple premises resembles to that of Kurma namely tortoise. Inside the temple, the idol of Maa Kali is kept which is made of 'reddish black Kastic pathar.' Maa Kali is worshipped in her 'Soroshi' form in this temple. There is an idol of smaller size of Maa Kali called 'Chotto Maa 'and this image used to be carried by Maharajas of Tripura during Mrigaya namely hunting and also during war.
